BEDM 10: Contrary Wishlists: the flute and the frivolous

Hello there! I've returned to form for BEDM after my ennui of yesterday.  I MIGHT post about some silly secret talents later on as my BEDM favourite blogger and fellow BEDM Buddy, Zoe at Pennyblossoms said I should! Maybe!!

Anyway, today's brief was Wishlishts.

Wishlists.  Hmmmm, I am always a little reluctant to put these together even though I LOVE looking at other people's and drooling over incredible things they have found.  But for making one myself, I just think I have too much stuff and the things I would quite like are often too expensive plus my willpower is too slim and putting lists might make me indulge. But still, for the sake of this post, I think it would be nice to share a few things I'd like. One frivolous and tangible. The other intangible and worthwhile! Take your pick.

So a few wishlists:

1.  Flute wishlist:

As an orchestral flute player (in my amateur life rather than as a pro more's the pity!), there are various pieces I have had the privilege to play many pieces on my wishlist and there are others which remain stubbornly out of reach.
Here are some pieces I'd REALLY like to play with an orchestra.  Unless specified, I mean the Flute 1 part/Principal flute.

1.  Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique.
This was Hector Berlioz' opium-induced crazy symphony based on the journeys of Him.  He was in love with  Harriet Smithson, an actress but alas she didn't love him.  He wrote this symphony in which he, the hero kept going to places and he is in love with Harriet. She has an idee fixe which is the musical word for a short repeating tune that keeps coming back- a fixed idea.  It comes back through all five movements- in a dream, at a ball, in the countryside, as a witch at the midnight sabbath and as a victim going to the scaffold.  Believe it or not, she was so flattered by this that she agreed to marry him! Here you can hear Harriet's theme in its different guises

Anyway, I have played 2nd flute and piccolo in this MANY times and even viola but never played Flute 1! It remains no.1 on my list.

2.  Gustav Mahler, Symphony no.2- "The resurrection"
I've played all the other Mahler Symphonies but number 2 which is just beautiful, I have not played.

3. Dmitry Shostakovitch any of his symphonies.
I've only played Flute 2, piccolo or Percussion in any of his  15 symphonies so I'd gladly play any of these.

4.  Rossini 'Overture to William Tell'
I have played flute 2 and viola more times than I care to say but never flute 1. Why not!?!!?!

5.  Igor Stravinsky 'Petroushka'
Again, I have played flute 2, piccolo AND viola in this and studied it for A level but never played 1st flute.  There's a lot of Stravinsky on my wish list

6. Any orchestral piece by Paul Hindemith.

7. The whole of Ravel's Mother Goose Ballet and in fact, the whole of Daphnis and Chloe ballet (which I HAVE performed THE famous flute solo in a performance conducted by Nick Collon of Aurora orchestra and proms fame, before he was famous!)

I won't share anymore as if you aren't a flautist, it's probably not relevant...

The frivolous wishlist:

Most of the things on here I wouldn't DREAM of asking (and any family members this is NOT a cheeky hint, this is a hypothetical wishlist!)  for, for a birthday or Christmas. But for the sake of my art (er- this blog post request?) I shall suffer and share with you a few items I am rather in admiration of.

1.  I'd love a turquoise glittery Kezzie name necklace from Tatty Devine or a cheap alternative that looks the same (Ebay lady in Cumbria) as they are too expensive- £37.50+! Would also like one that says 'Impossible girl' in mirrored TARDIS blue acrylic!! To be honest, I'd be glad with any 'not too out there' from Tatty Devine.

2.  I love most dresses from Poppy England- they are so fun. I own one which I got heavily reduced at 70% off in navy blue. I own many dresses so it wouldn't be a good idea buying more, especially an expensive one like this!Nice it is all cotton and made in England.

3.  A handmade viola made as a copy of the Landolfi viola in the Royal Academy of Music collection of instruments made by David Rattray.

I used to have the privilege of working for this fine luthier and at the Academy looking after these instruments and I LOVED the Landolfi viola. I would probably like playing my viola more if I had a really nice one. Not that I don't love Frederica, but having tried some amazing historic instruments, I've been lured to the dark side.

4. I love Anna Chocola in Brighton's handmade vintage-pattern hats.  Especially the cloches. Would definitely love one of these if I didn't already have ten million hats! I keep thinking these would be GORGEOUS for a wedding outfit. Wish I had one for wedding next week!

5.  Cath Kidston dress

I have several and don't need any more but I always love a good novelty print. Not bothered by the generic florals or spots but a fish dress? Who DOESN'T need one of these in their life?  (not me I am in no doubt

6. In some ways I would love to learn to use an SLR or Bridge camera, not sure I'd be any good at it, but I do love my Canon Ixus, possibly THE most useful and well used presents I have ever received so this is just a curious pondering!

Oh WHAT the heck, I'm on a roll, let's just shove in wishlists willy-nilly!

Blog wishlist (not really):

1. To gain sudden popularity of people who love my witty style of writing (ho, ho ho) and be able to live off the proceeds, yet remain anonymous and simple. Yeh right...
2. To actually make it to 200 followers before the next ice-age. My followers list moves at a glacial speed!
3. To be able to do it all in 15 minutes. That's commenting thoughtfully, writing award-winning posts and getting to bed by 10!
4.  To not be scared to change header/layout etc or change blog url/name to something else I had in mind without losing anything!
5.  To be able to write a bit more concisely and not feel need to stuff extra sentences in like they're going extinct.

Holiday wishlist
1.  Austria.
2.  Canada.
3.  Slovenia.
4.  Thailand.
5.  Galapagos.
6.  Isles of Scilly.
7. Isle of Skye.

Possible wishlist of readers/commenters of this post.
1. Kezzie will end the misery
2.  Kezzie will STOP. ADDING. LISTS
3.  That computer will shut down thus rendering escape from screen.
4. That HER computer will...

    1. Yes, I know all the tangible items are frivolous and I wouldn't dream of asking someone to buy me them, too expensive and not necessary!!! But it's nice to kind of make a list sometimes- rather cathartic!x

  4. I love the Berlioz - it's so beautiful. I think you should definitely being playing 1st flute Kezzie.
I played flute in the youth orchestra - always 2nd!! Kevin Ferguson always hogged the first part lol I played very little in recent years and sold my flute a few years back when was raising funds to buy my beautiful Avalon guitar.
    Those hats are fabulous :)
    Have a good week.

    1. I'm lucky to have played 1st flute in many of my wishlist pieces- Mahler 1, Hindemith Mathis de Maler, Symphonic metamorphosen, all the Beethovens, many, many pieces, but the Berlioz really is my elusive one! It's not even a particularly soloistic part but one I want to play!
Oooh, you played the flute! I didn't play flute in youth orchestra, I had to play viola, boo hiss! But at Uni onwards, I was chosen on merit to play flute not made to play viola because there were less of them- hurrah!
Sad about your flute- maybe you could find a cheap one in a charity shop like I did!
The hats ARE amazing! I would love one!x

  5. Kezzie, I hope that your wishes will comes true. My daughter Christine can plays the flute but she is so busy that I don't think she plays anymore. The music in that video sounds difficult but I'm sure you could master it.

I love those cloche hats too. I bet they are expensive too.

    Have a great week.
    Hugs,

    1. Ha, I don't expect many of them to come true except the flute ones- those are entirely possible!!! Especially the Berlioz since we play it most summers at camp!
The Berlioz isn't that hard- I've actually practised the part but not performed it with an orchestra-we have these orchestral extracts books which print all the famous orchestral flute parts so you can practice for auditions!
Yes,the cloches are at least £55- that's a lot of money!!! Too much for me.
      Have a great week Julia!x

  7. If you want followers quickly, start doing cornography, not stuff with corn but I switched out the P so you don't REALLY get more followers based on that. And THEN, you will also be admired for your writing it you place any word or food item on your body. I've pondered this but, nah. But a fish dress? Oh yeah!! Good one.

    1. Ha, you are hysterical! Yes, I suppose that would be ONE way! I wrote that item in jest- I don't think I could COPE with being popular (in the unlikely event that would happen) too much pressure and then not enough time to go and visit everyone which is important for me!!!x
Fish dress= excellent! Not as good as a uni-strap patchwork quilt though!x

  14. Hahahaha, I loved this post! By the way, no, I don't wish that you stop writing and that the compute shuts down! In such a fast-paced world, that's a great way to get to know you! I loved to know what you had played and I loved the Berlioz-symphony story!!!! Also, the dresses, the places to go... so when you are in Austria, Vienna has the Haus der Musik museum and I bet you already know it. But if not, pls go there! I love the hats and am eager to buy one or to copy them, I confess! The pendant is also lovely! Maybe you get as a Christmas present? As for the blog, it's lovely the way it is. But sometimes I agree, we want to change! Anyway, I will be following you!

Yes, the story of Berlioz is brilliant! I took my kids to listen to the LSO play Symphony Fantastique and they loved the story!
I've not been to Vienna, only areas around Salzburg- I long to go!
The hats are beautiful! You should buy one. When you say, "Copy" what do you mean? DO you have your own personal tailor/milliner or something?!

  16. Wow that dress is fantastic! I don't have a spare £60 though! I have an amazon wishlist and it has 300 books on it. I do tend to buy one or two each month, but I can easily add 10 more to the list in a month... my dream is to have all the book off the list (not to mention a big house with a large library to store them all)!!!

RE 30 Days Wild - Yay for giving it a go! I just replied to your first comment with a few really simple ideas. Soon I should be receiving an ideas pack (if you register via the 30 days website, you can have one posted or emailed) so I will gladly help you with any easily achievable ideas if I can!

Can I also have the large library house!
Yes, I will try to do the Wild days!x

  17. The dresses are all fabulous, so pretty. Oh my followers grow s....l...o...w...l...y too, then goes up, then back down! I mean I don't know how one can set a goal of 'gaining more' followers in x amount of time and for it to happen, how can you make people find and like your blog? I've changed my blog up a lot over the past year and always panic I'm going to hate it and won't be able to get it back...I even did it with my Tumblr the other day, but had the savvy to keep a tab open with the old one in to revert back and save it as that, after I realised I wasn't keen on the new layout! x

  18. LOL!!!! Such a fun post! I hope your music wishes come true because they would be so soul-satisfying. I'd love to see your other wishes come true too, because you would take such delight in them. My passion is travel. I'd love to go to Skye; one of my great grandmothers was there, and I have oodles of Scottish forebears. And Galapogos is very high on my list. I'm in awe of how prolific you are with your blog. I wish I could get faster. Loved your description of stuffing in extra sentences like they were going extinct. Hugs!

  21. Ha ha, this made me chuckle. Interesting choice of music - Shostakovich is great, although I was a clarinettist, so coming from a different angle.

Love the hats - will have to check those out. And gorgeous dresses - wish I could wear them, but leg issue so never going to happen for summer dresses.

It was a goal of mine that this year I'd learn to use a camera properly. I chose a compact system one - so a smaller version of a DSLR. I love it, and definitely recommend moving to one or similar. There's some great online photography courses.
