TARDIS Tuesday- The Husbands of River Song

Hello there!

Hope you are well!

This week is a busy one for me with rehearsals, school events and concerts every day and in fact, this continues into next week as well!

I am performing with Orchestra of the City on Friday in Holborn. It's the first time I have performed with the orchestra- my friend Debbie plays flute 2 with them and she asked me which I'm really pleased about!   We received an email on Saturday saying that the dress code was 'All Black with Sparkle'.

This made me very happy because I have a few contenders for this (actually cosplay related in several places) which would fulfil this criteria.

The first one of these is worn by River Song, played by Alex Kingston, in a Doctor Who Christmas special from a few years ago and is very sparkly and beautiful!

Although it is not completely black, I think you would get away with wearing this for a concert with the dress code.

I have not actively collected River Song clothing, it's often a bit too over the top and glam for me but I saw someone (who is a musician!) wear this dress on Instagram and I thought that I would love to own this as I would get use out of it for concerts and I thought the shape would work for me.  However, I didn't really ever search for it as I knew it was originally an expensive dress.
A couple of months ago, something made me have a search for it on Vinted and I found this one, priced at £5.00.  It was a size 12 which I wondered about. I am more of a 10 (sometimes 8, depending on stretch) on my top half but bottom half,am more of a 12.  I decided that at £5.00 (plus about £4.00 extra including postage and buyer protection), I could probably take a punt on it.  It arrived and I tried it on. AH, I loved how it looked but it is quite roomy on me though because it has formed cups over the chest area, I can get away with it though I would prefer to fill out those cups for it to feel totally secure.
I tried it on Saturday night in advance of the concert (still haven't decided on which I will wear) and CBC loved it!

It has quite a daring back so you can't really get away with wearing a bra underneath. I think you can see it's a bit big here.
I feel super glam here!  Should I go with this one, feeling a bit big (could always wear a short-sleeved black cardie on top) or should I go with something which fits me a bit better!
If I find this in a 10 or 8 at a reasonable price, I would definitely buy it!

Hope you are well!

TARDIS Tuesday meets New Year's eve- triple outfits!

Hello there!

I hope you are well.  Well, it's all a bit crazy, isn't it.  Lockdown again.  My school was due not to open to anyone but key workers for the next 2 weeks anyway as my London borough has one of the highest Covid rates but still, the thought of not being back at school is a bit desolate.  I found online teaching (creating online lessons) hard last time and it was really good to be back in the classroom last term teaching practical music.  In case you are interested, I am taking the Year 5 key worker bubble on Thursdays and Fridays in a jobshare with the French teacher (she will do Mon, Tues, Wed)-we've got to teach the same lessons in person that the class teachers will be teaching via Zoom in person.  It seems we will have 10 children at the moment in year 5 but who knows how that will pan out.

Anyway, I'm feeling too anxious about that to talk about it at the moment so let's go onto something more pleasant:  New year's eve!

As we were about to start a board game, I sat there in my red Cashmere polo neck and jeans and suddenly thought, "I'm blooming well going to dress up!" So, I ran upstairs and in the space of 5 minutes, had changed into...

I started with my charity-shopped blue sequin skirt which hasn't been worn this year yet- I added a black Monsoon v-neck top and a cashmere charity-shopped black shrug.  I added my Esoteric London star tassel necklace and my Lorelai recycled bubblewrap earrings plus some Cobalt and gold peep-toe shoes.

This was lovely and getting dressed up made it feel really extra special.

BUT, after the takeaway, I was really stuffed and the waistband on my skirt is quite tight, so I decided to go for a quick-change into...

I kept the jewellery and shoes and changed into this satin blue jacquard dress. I bought this second hand for £10 from Lorelai who made the earrings a few years ago. MUCH more comfortable. It has a lovely low back which I forgot to photograph.

Later, just before the stroke of midnight, I decided to change one more time into another glam dress...

This dress is my TARDIS Tuesday entry in the trio- it is a a dress very similar to Clara's dress from Mummy on the Orient express. I've yet to have the opportunity to wear it out so this seemed a good one.

As usual, New Year's eve messed up my sleep patterns for the start of the year so that's not the best!
Which of my three outfits is your favourite then and why?  Did you wear your glam rags for a stay at home celebration? I must confess that dressing up glam really did make a difference!

Arctic glitz

Here's the outfit I wore for our last day of isolation and because CBC was feeling a bit more perky, I managed to persuade him to come into the garden to take some photos.
I wanted to go for glitz, glam and sparkles with this one! I was hopeful this was my last day of confinement so I went all out!

I started with the Lindybop skirt which features an arctic silhouette and magical snowy skies.  To give it extra oomph, I added my cobalt blue petticoat underneath. CBC flatly refused to photograph my flashing it saying it didn't match and looked silly so there we are.
I added the sparkly Primark turtle neck on the top half.

Shoe wise, I wanted to wear my silver glitter Mary Jane shoes but I couldn't find them so I wore these Hush Puppies pewter heels instead.

I wanted to channel my inner Sheila so here is a photo of the 'stuff'!
You can see the shoes close up, my Primark turquoise sequin belt, green star earrings, snowflake necklace and alllllll the bracelets!

I was on the phone to my Mum and CBC took this picture of my calling because the sofa and phone kind of fit in with the outfit!

I confess that I felt happy and FAB in this outfit!

TARDIS Tuesday- Charity shop Zoe Herriot in the Mind Robber

Hello there!

I had another TARDIS Tuesday lined up but it involved some arduous transferring of photos from Instagram so I am going with a different approach to TARDIS Tuesday.

This is Zoe Herriott.  She was companion to the 2nd Doctor, Patrick Troughton (1968-69).  This outfit features from one of my favourite Doctor Who serials of all- The Mind Robber.  It was an ingenious serial involving the Doctor and his companion having to solve riddles and puzzles in a sort of fairytale land to escape!

Zoe Herriot was a genius Astrophysicist  from the 21st century who first met the Doctor during the Cyberman serial- The Wheel in Space.  She wore a variety of interesting outfits but the one I often remember is this pewter-looking sparkly jumpsuit!

Well, I was in my local Sue Ryder back at the start of August and I saw these two garments!

Sparkly zipup top/jacket and sparkly trousers!
My head immediately said, "Zoe Herriot!" to me.
Alas, the trousers were size 18 and far too baggy and in reality, not really my style, but I quite liked the sparkly top!
I decided to take them to try on in the changing room!
Obviously, I couldn't do anything about my hair but I often wear a black headband so I am sure I could do that!
The trousers were much more of a match but too big- lurex is surprisingly comfortable!

I ended up buying the jacket because I felt guilty about doing said unofficial cosplay but since it contributes to charity, I don't feel so bad!!

Finally, I have to say, I would LOVE the 13th Doctor or any future Doctors to meet Zoe and Jamie again- I really have a lot of affection for these two companions!  They were the first early Who companions I knew!

What do you reckon? Is this a cosplay that I could adapt better?  Do you think it works?

And that will be your crowning glory your whole life through

Special brownie points to anyone who tells me which film the blog title comes from (no cheating and looking on google!)

Flower crown

It was my work Christmas party last week and we went for a very nice Chinese meal at a gold club.  I was really lucky as my kind Deputy-Head teacher let me go round to hers in between and had a relax, a bath and a sleep! I wasn't feeling very well so that was SUCH a kind thing to do.   Her house was amazing! She's got SUCH a good idea for quirky and fun ways to decorate a house.

I wore an old staple little black skater dress from the Closet brand which I bought in a shop close to my old home- it/s got a velvet  bodice and a short circle skirt

All the full length shots were rubbish (And I had the nicest pair of grey chevron tights on as well!) but you can see it here /below where I wore it with a sweater last year.
Black lace

I added a blue sparkly Oasis shrug (charity-shopped) but the berry on the cake was my new festive floral crown from Crown and Glory. I really like it- it's got berries, pine cones, roses, mushrooms  and foliage over it and I am definitely going to wear it on Christmas day too. I'm not sure that the golf club was quite ready for hippy chic head-dresses but after a few initial glances I think they got used to it! That's my lovely, lovely work colleague above!

Crown and glory

I didn't really get any close ups of my headdress as I told you, the photo quality was pretty awful (why can no one work my camera except me and CBC?) but you can see it in the box it came in above!  I like how it takes festival chic and gives it a winter edge!

Looking up the title reference on Youtube (for a bout of nostalgia for one of my favourite films), I somehow saw that there was a full film on Youtube called Wildchild which I just ended up watching. It's really good/fun*!! I really enjoyed it, It's about a wild American girl who is sent to live in England at an austere boarding school where she tries to rebel to be sent home. Of course it fulfills all those stuffy English stereotypes that American directors love to exaggerate and had lots of interesting things including the girls bathing in 4 adjacent baths. REAAALLLLY? Like that will really happen in England. I liked the reference to the girls going charity-shopping in Cancer Research though. Wish I could go to that particular store- it appeared to have loads of vintage goodness!!!

My day went very well in the end.  The KS2 Christmas production at the church went reaaaaaaally well. Like really well!  I am amazed how well my children sang! Every child was there pretty much, there was no getting out of it this year which really made a difference and the children were ridiculously excited but to a good end!

Now just one day before the holidays begin!

Hurrah

*I know that the majority of the population will probably hate it, my husband included. Lucky he's out!

Veteran scooter

IMG_3913
As promised to Luan, here is my pink scooter.  As you can see, it definitely looks like it would belong to a 4 year old and indeed it did. My niece actually.  But luckily, she had about 3 that my sister had got on Freecycle or something like that, so I asked if I could nab it.
IMG_3909
But before you think I have jumped on the kiddie-band-wagon at this late juncture, getting down with the kids, oh no, I am a veteran micro-scooter rider!  Cast your mind back to the year 2000, a new craze had hit the city in London. Suited and booted business people were to be seen everywhere about London, getting around on these silver-coloured aluminium micro-scooters as a way to get around. As a then non-bike rider, I thought this was a marvellous idea as it would save time and make you a bit more speedy. They were, however, quite expensive- I think people were paying about £100 for them.  Anyway, that summer, I got a job at the Barbican hotel and arranged to sublet my friend's room in Dalston over the summer at a reduced rate as I would be working 3.30-midnight shifts, so didn't really want to be going home to Essex on the train.  But then I had a fairly hefty walk to Dalston as buses would have stopped by then and then I'd be spending money on travel.  So then, I decided to buy a micro-scooter.

IMG_3912
Four days into my new job, and a little tired of the walk, I found a bike-shop in Hoxton who were selling them for £60 and bought one as an investment for saving on travel costs.  And so it began.  The first day I bought it, I was sitting there in the switchboard office, trying to work out how to went up between phone calls.  That was the day I met the General Manager of the Hotel of course!  He was mightily intrigued by it and was very nice and didn't tell me off for doing this during my shift.  (I got 100% in the mystery guest that month don'tcha know!)

IMG_3914
Every evening at ten past midnight, I would zoom off down Central street and scoot my way home to Dalston, meeting very few people.  On De Beavour Road (the posh bit of Dalston) I would ride in the middle of the road as it was so deserted and so smooth and down-hill.  Only realised when there was a solitary kind  driver who stopped and very politely told me I wasn't very visible and perhaps I should ride on the pavement, that I realised that I couldn't really be seen so had to be a bit more careful.

IMG_3915
And so it went on for weeks and weeks as I earned lots of money to pay off my £500 credit card bill (I have never used a credit card to this day) which I had accrued from paying for train fares to London and a few other clothing treats over the first year and had forgotten to pay.  I didn't take out much student loan that first year and then I only ever used it to buy my flute and an alto flute and a B-foot for my flute. I was so grateful for that full-time job, for my friend's kind subletting for what I could actually pay.  I enjoyed exploring Dalston's market and shops and it seems I even bought a pair of early Irregular Choice shoes, I've recently discovered!  The turquoise top I last wore with this skirt for Visible Monday was also bought then.

It was all going so well for over a month and a half until I started to get a pain in my right ankle that progressively got worse and I found I couldn't scoot and had to walk/hobble. I had somehow got RSI from my scooting in my ankle.  I had to abandon the scooter for a while and then it laid dormant in the loft of my old house, slightly broken as it was missing a screw.  I only discovered it in January when we were clearing out the loft. My sister claimed in in exchange for the pink one which I somehow kept.

I may look silly but it does help save 5 precious minutes on the way to work if I am running late and haven't got 20mins to reach the station and get the train. On the way home, it saves about 8 minutes as it is largely down-hill and it halves the time from the station to school at the other end.

IMG_3917
More proof of being down with the kids. If you have kids or teens, you can't have failed to notice the craze that is taking over Britain- the Loomon- children have these looms and bright coloured rubberbands which they weave into amazing bracelets.  One of my children at school watched a tutorial and made me a special fruit-smelling, rainbow Treble Clef charm which I strung onto my Alice in Wonderland necklace. It seemed to go well with the rainbow skirt.

IMG_3913
The rest of this outfit consists of M&S vintagey Madras-check dress (charity shop), black vest (Primark), bird-brooch, (not sure),silver belt (charity shop), turquoise silk hair-tie (left-over Balinese silk from our men's wedding handkerchiefs), shoes (Toms)

The make of my scooter is Razor (to be said with manly growly voice)- so masculine for this Penelope Pitstop transport. Made less hard-sounding by the wheels which say 'Daisy' on them.

Hope all is well with you. Forgive me but have a really busy week this week, rehearsals and concerts on 4 evenings and then a concert in the Black mountains near Wales in a ruined abbey!  Stay tuned for more boring reminiscences of my youngerlife  exciting adventures.

Whitby Jet, Emerald city

It's funny how one article can be someone's ideal and another's disaster.  My Mum was bought a gorgeous Whitby jet necklace and earrings when she left a job.  The set remained in a drawer for years unworn, as it wasn't her.  Fast forward several years to the first time I went to Whitby. I waxed lyrical to her about how I wish I had bought a Whitby jet necklace and she produced the set and gave them to me.  The necklace was my ideal- small, elegant and fairly simple, a small but sparkling bow.  I've in the meantime, lost one gem from it (it is unnoticable) - realistically, can I get it reset anywhere local or am I going to have to wait until I return to Whitby?)

Emerald top 2

I went out for dinner with two friends on Friday night.  I wore it in a jet and emerald outfit for the dinner with my friends- I wanted to contrast that dark sparkle of the Whitby jet with a vibrant, more in your face emerald.  (If you squint hard enough you can also see my engagement ring on my finger!)
 Emerald top 3

I wore a thrifted Ted Baker aged 14-15 skirt (check the teenage section!) and my old trusty repro jet headband contrasting with a Forever 21 emerald ruffly top, thrifted emerald satchel and bracelets (one thrifted- others gifts)

Emerald top 5

Another lost gem which I thought reflected that midnight sparkle of  the jet was found in these glittery black tights which have hovered in the tights-hoard (hands up who's got one! Who knew I was a tights hoarder?  I was in denial till recently!)  Put together with comfortable looking black Primark glittery-block heeled ballet pumps.  Don't be fooled by their innocent facade, the wretched things really hurt!!!!
IMG_5402

I had a lovely catch-up with the girls despite having to really try hard not to speak loudly!  One of them is also getting married, though she has decided on a date (April) and is getting married in a Kentish church and nearby castle!  How did YOU start planning your wedding (if you, the dear reader are married), honestly, I don't know how to start and I am putting it off because it seems really arduous! I really want to get married SOON but somehow panic at that not being possible with all the planning and financial constraints means I somehow avoid the subject!

I just returned from my home-group from church's weekly meeting. Was a great meeting with lots to think about.  Another thing we decided on was we're going to make Christmas food bags for some local hostels that have opened and yours truly has the fun task of getting the congregation involved on Sunday!  It all starts with my buying large quantities of gift bags and giving them out...!

How are you?
