Whitby wanderings- A meander at Sandsend

Morning! It is a beautiful, bright day here in Essex and I have had a sumptuous lie-in, then got up and cleared up the pigsty that has been the kitchen after a busy week whilst listening to John Williams filmscore sound tracks and then emptying the compost in the garden.  It continues with washing and all those necessary mundane tasks that have to be completed.

However, since posting here has been very sporadic, I thought I'd resume my Whitby writeup from half-term since it is almost Easter and it is now rather overdue!

After our walk in Whitby, CBC and I took a wrong turning from Whitby towards Goathland and ended up driving through a nearby village called Sandsend where the sea and beaches were right by the main road. It was very easy to pull over and park (no charges between October and April- hurrah!)
The beach was sandy which then seemed to turn into more Shingle and stone as we walked on.
CBC was perfectly content to watch the waves for a while whilst I searched for sea-glass.
Alas, as the tide was coming in, and I wasn't paying attention, my feet were quickly immersed in water which went over the top of my boots resulting in much squelchage.
The persistent surge of the waves is such a soothing accompaniment to beachcombing and I confess to a inner quietude laced with a fervent joy as I advance at a slow tempo along the stony terrain.
The froth ices everything in a thin layer for such a insignificant period of time before it returns from whence it came.
CBC joined in the beach-combing occasionally and rather liked the cappuccino-hued smoothness of this morsel.
The stones never quite retain their magical sheen if one removes them from their home but it is a joy to see familiar shapes gleaming as you walk. A heart for Valentines day.
I spied the odd thrilling piece of smoothed seaglass. Do you spy it?
Maybe this one is more obvious with its Emerald-city shades.
And the odd translucent milky shade accompanied by quartz.
Every so often, a wave would leave iridescent bubbles lingering on the surface of an honoured pebble.
And the odd stone dons a stylish quartz belt.
And finally, a heart-shaped fragment of seaglass in honour of St Valentines, held up alongside my beloved in the distance.
Odd pieces of quartz mixed with other elements held up to the sunset yields an inner magic.
Whilst the waves continue their ceaseless ostinato.
As the misty air gives a turbulence to the ever-progressing waves, we feel it is time to retreat.
With a few more lingering glances.
"Come back soon!" the waves seem to entreat us as they lick at our feet.
Whilst we traipse back towards the car, my reluctance to leave results in a death-pace glancing ever downwards seeking a final treasure.
Nothing to see here but a myriad of proud grey tones.
And more quartz adornment.
But wait! What is that?  Long lost ceramics or pottery?
And a long-smoothed seaglass pebble.
A farewell emerald...
And a final flurry of bubbles.

Sandsend- our time with you was short but it was filled with beauty, thrills, solitude and magnificence.  We thank you.

10 things to be thankful for.

Dark nights, busy days, chapped skin and fatigue.  Despair of the world and weariness of life's toils. But remembering what I am thankful for, ah, that is a good thing to remedy it!  Good things include memories that I will cherish, moments that made me smile, people I love and am grateful for and the comforts of my life.

1.  For having a nice parcel to come home to when feeling gloomy.  Shouldn't have bought a dress. Did. Happy to come home to it. It's got musical print all over it! Also bought fox socks from Aldi. Again. Shouldn't have. Don't care.

A work colleague who is in SMT who I cover Literacy for on a Friday said to me today, "I am just SO glad it is you that covers my Literacy on a Friday. You are the one person in this building who I trust completely to deliver it as I want it done exactly and I am very protective over my Literacy teaching. I am so glad, thank you."  From her, that means SOO much to me. We used to team teach together when I was in my NQT year and I love her ways of working so honestly, that is a comment I will cherish in my heart on all the days when I feel a rubbish teacher.

2.  My husband buying fish pie last night for me when I was out at my gig.  Was not expecting him to have thought of getting me something!

3.  The gig. We had such fun at John Lewis, Chelmsford last night playing flute quartets for their Christmas Fashion event. It was a great event and people seemed genuinely appreciative and interested in us, not just walking past us as wallpaper.  Lots of compliments and lovely to spend time with the girls all glammed up and playing Christmas tunes!

4.  My hard-working recorder club. They're doing really well on Jazzy Jingle Jangles, an arrangement I did for them. My junior club are really diligent and it made the difference that the two slightly disruptive boys were away!  Although I have lost a few members this year who have become a bit 'too cool for school', the core really want to be there and practice!

5.  I was rather sad today that two of my most delightful students left.  They are such lovely girls and I was gutted to lose them to West London.  I said goodbye to the younger one as she and her friends were leaving the room and gave her her a hug and she told me she was really going to miss me. She then burst into tears and the second she left the room, I did too!  Although it is sad, what it means to me is that the children I teach do stay in my heart. Each one means something to me and I am glad that in my job that someone has valued my teaching enough to burst into tears when saying goodbye to me. I know that that is sad in itself, but I hope you know what I mean by that!

6. Jazz at Pizza Express:  Tomorrow night, CBC and I are meeting his Mum and brother in London to watch a brilliant child prodigy called Joey Alexander, a 12 year old Jazz-pianist who is a genius.  Really looking forward to it and plan to wear my music print dress above. But not fox socks. That would be a bit much.

7.  Going to my Dad's house on Saturday night for fireworks with him, step-mum, little sister and my older sister, husband and niece are coming too. Can't wait!

8.  For kind messages.  My little sister sent me a text message yesterday just to tell me she loved me. She never does that. How sweet it was and touched my heart as I sat on the train!

9.  Chatting to my Mum on the phone.  One thing I am grateful for with my 2.5 miles walk a day is the opportunity to call my Mum and Dad and chat to them. I love to speak to my Mum in the mornings and to hear what she's been up to.

10. For your consistent support.  Each of you who cares enough to visit here and leave me a message makes me smile and delight.  You are all busy but you still comment.  Thank you!

What are you thankful for this week?
