TARDIS Tuesday - Romana Warriors Gate

http://www.4thdoctorcostume.com/2015/06/lalla-wards-time-capsule.html
Hello there!

Time for TARDIS Tuesday!
I unexpectedly ended up wearing this for school on Friday so this ended up being my TT outfit for this week.
I wore it relatively recently for TARDIS Tuesday about a year ago. It is the last outfit worn by Romana, the Time Lady companion portrayed in her second incarnation by Lalla Ward, one time wife of her Doctor, Tom Baker.

The look is mainly red and black. Here I am :

I wore the red top with some loose black Seasalt trousers (bought last Summer from their eBay outlet after ripping my regular black trousers in a cycling fall.

I added these black Rieker ankle strap shoes which I charity shopped last year and then added these red Primary socks plus some red pencil earrings, a present from my current Headteacher well over a decade ago when we used to share a class!
I do love red and black together. I'd love Romana's actual top it looks so soft and flowing - mine is little more scratchy - but it has the effect!
There are so many beautiful Romana looks I'd love to try! Anyone got a grey smock sailor dress at all???

Went to the first rehearsal of one of my orchestras tonight (Monday) - I'm playing piccolo and luckily it went OK and there are no massive scary piccolo moments for the conductor to terrorise me on.

My main orchestra, Kensington Chamber Orchestra has its concert this Saturday. It's a bit of a Girl Power concert. We have a female conductor, a female violin soloist and we are playing a symphony by French composer Louise Farranc. Very cool! More details available on request! Or you can look at our website!!

TARDIS TUESDAY My favourite Romana

Had a LOVELY weekend!!! We went to Rochester on Saturday and Sunday, went over to Mum's.  All lovely. More on that anon.  For TARDIS Tuesday, I am featuring an old favourite. It was last featured in August 2023 on here.

Worn by Mary Tamm playing Romana in her second story, The Stones of Blood, it's very Kate Bush!

Here's my 2025 iteration, worn on Sunday to go over to Mum's!

I am wearing a charity-shopped burgundy top and an eBay-purchased red tier skirt.  Both are super comfy to wear and good for a warm Spring day.

They are hard to spot but I wore a thin gold chain necklace and a gold bracelet to match Romana's.  The chain was my Nan's.  The bracelet a present from a child.

I added this gorgeous jacket bought in Rochester on Saturday from the Demelza charity shop. It's from a Marbella based brand and I saw it hanging in the shop window and pounced! It's quilted on the inside and features a thick brocade material and embroidered flowers and ric-rac.  I ended up wearing it all day in Rochester as it was cold in the shade and I'd left my jacket in the car. Super pleased with the jacket as I've been wanting something like this for a while! Vix, it's your fault!

Here's Mummy and I together. We went over to hers to see her as she wanted to give CBC his birthday presents and she's cracked a bone in her wrist.  She made a delicious crustless asparagus quiche using her home grown asparagus!  She served it with her own homegrown rocket and beetroot as well as tomatoes and Sauerkraut. Such a fresh-delicious lunch.  We took over a less-healthy chocolate cake from Waitrose.  We were both sad to leave hers!

If only weekends were longer!

TARDIS Tuesday Twist- Romana from the Leisure Hive

Hi there!

I missed TARDIS Tuesday for a few weeks so I am back! I decided, this week, to do use the outfit as more of a general style inspiration rather than try to create more of a match.

I last used this look as my inspiration in April 2021 and it is one of my absolute favourite looks worn by any Doctor Who companion- if you look at the sailor and nautical labels tag in my sidebar, I LOVE a sailor look!

It was a vintage Sailor look worn by 4th Doctor companion and Time Lady, Romana.

https://x.com/archivetvmus71/status/1050080061678866432

I was packing for my holiday and I realised I had worn a similarish Romana look when we did our Treasure island performance and found it ridiculously comfortable, so I decided to pack it for my trip!

Here you can see what I put together.
I started with this Primark sailor dress that I picked up in a charity shop in 2012 around Last seen on the blog in 2014.
To make the red tie, I added a red ribbon which came from the waist tie from another dress and tucked it through the tie of the dress.
The hat came from a charity shop around about 15 years ago and it straw with raw silk edging and hat tie.
The bottoms are actually some pyjama bottoms I bought from M&S (which I did actually buy for the original cosplay!) - yes, I wore pyjama bottoms in public.  Do I care? Not really- they work as trousers!

To complete the look, I added a pair of Tom shoes- not the ones I wore last time (which are more red) because that involved ratching around in a cupboard!

I loved wearing this outfit and it worked for a day at home with gardening!

TARDIS Tuesday - The Horns of Nimon Romana

Hi there,

For TARDIS Tuesday, I am featuring Romana for a second week.  Mainly because, when I was putting together last week's look, I spied a garment in the cupboard that reminded me that on my 'To do' list for TARDIS Tuesday was this look from Romana in an episode called 'The Horns of Nimon'.

This is one of Romana's more Doctory looks!

 d4-5l-108

 https://theultimateguidetothefashionofdoctorwho.wordpress.com/2017/10/19/romana-ii-the-horns-of-nimon/

It's a great look which has very equestrian vibes and is again, part of Romana's common palette of white and red!

I decided to do a closet cosplay of this, e.g. none of the items are actually obtained for this outfit but  I had anyway.

It's very much an approximation but hopefully, a nod to the original.
I started with the red jacket.  It's a slightly different shade and shorter. It came from Primark and I bought it about a decade ago.

The next garments I selected from CBC's wardrobe.  His Darcy shirt came from the Regency Shirt Co. and I recently discovered that Paul McGann wore this same shirt for his 'Night of the Doctor' 50th anniversary outfit.

I then grabbed his waistcoat he bought for his Newt Scamander outfit for Harry Potter night at his school.  I've used this same waistcoat for 2 of my Yaz Khan outfits as well as wearing his entire Newt outfit for World Book Day.

I knew my eYe Boutique boots would be fine for the boots but the trousers presented me with a problem. I had white linen trousers but they were too baggy. Leggings were too tight so I remembered this pair of mink coloured bamboo trousers that Mum bought me a good few years ago. These have always been an awkward item in my wardrobe- not a flattering colour OR shape for me but they've sort of survived in my legging bag.

So that's the entire look!

If I could wear better trousers, I'd wear this outfit for school but those trousers will never be seen in public!!!
What would you do to improve it?

Hope all is well with you!

TARDIS Tuesday- Romana's swansong look from Warrior's Gate

Hello there!

For TARDIS Tuesday this week, I am debuting a new outfit AND it's another red one!

It features in my favourite Classic Who companion, Romana's final serial called Warrior's Gate.

Romana had a real eclectic, costumey set of outfits in her wardrobe and her style is very much up my street!

Today's one is quite different from her usual look but not her usual colours:

Here's the designer's initial drawing of the outfit:

http://www.4thdoctorcostume.com/2015/06/lalla-wards-time-capsule.html

https://aminoapps.com/c/doctor-who-cast-crew/page/blog/romana-iis-outfits-ranked/6qpR_leSzukZwpj3n1ZVGYpKqKDpLlg15

As you can see, she wears matching red socks to go with the top and black Mary Jane shoes to match her black trousers.

https://doctorwhoworlduk.com/romana-2-gallery

The high-necked, almost Mandarain look blouse has covered buttons all over it- I hope there's another way to get in and out of it as otherwise, that set of buttons would take a LOT of time to do!

Here's my look!

I started with a high-necked top from River Island (bought from Vinted) which has lovely flowing sleeves. It's not my usual top silhouette but is really comfortable.  Although I didn't have identical coloured socks to accompany it, at a distance, they seem to match.  I wore these socks for my Romana Shada outfit too!

My shoes are from Clarks and are T-bar shoes but I tucked in the  T-bar and kept the ankle strap part.

You can see those lovely sleeves in this picture (which is a behind the scenes picture from @doctorwho_60s_70s_80s

Couldn't resist trying to (VERY BADLY!) recreate this picture!  Ha, ha, how bad is my editing!!! The MS Publisher equivalent of using Paint program!

The silhouette of this look, for me, is very much, Female Conductor! I feel like I've seen female conductors wear something similar in different colours! I would wear this for a choir performance when conducting or leading them!

I recently watched this on BBC iPlayer for the 2nd time and I enjoyed it but there was a lot of to-and-froing plus I thought the way Romana left was very abrupt!!!

What do you think of this look?  For a lot of Who characters, they find this look kind of boring but I like the thought of this being in silk!

TARDIS Tuesday- 70's Salmon- Romana and the Stones of Blood

It's my first TARDIS Tuesday of the year and I thought I'd start with a new one!  In the 1970's, we were introduced to the Doctor's first Gallifreyan companion in the TARDIS, the beautiful Romanadrovatrelundar, AKA Romana for short. The glamorous, intelligent Timelady joined the TARDIS to assist the Doctor in searching for the Key to Time. The whole of this season was made up of 6 stories (mostly consisting of 4 parts, except for the final Ribos Operation) which all involved the search for the pieces of the key to Time which would reset the universe to a balance of good and evil.  The White Guardian gives the Doctor the task but warns him about the Black Guardian who wants to redress the balance in favour of evil.  Romana was played by Mary Tamm who is actually one of the first Who characters I wanted to dress as. Lovely Norma made me a black version of her beautiful white dress from The Ribos Operation for my orchestra concerts which I wore here.  I've cosplayed 3 versions of her key to time outfits with the exception of this one.

Today, I'm debuting a new outfit from the Key to Time episode entitled, The Stones of Blood.  Romana wears two outfits in this episode and I have attempted the second one about 4 times!  This one, I've not seen anyone attempt. I know quite a few cosplayers/Who dresseruppers don't like this outfit but I've always rather liked it!  Let's have a look at it:

This is Romana's first visit to Earth and she tells the Doctor she's going to dress for Earth.  She comes out of the TARDIS wardrobe dressed like this!  For reasons the Doctor can't fathom.
She wears a Burberry flat cap, a Coral/apricot grandad shirt/tunic, matching trousers, a black belt, impractical gold high-heeled sandals plus a thin gold necklace and gold watch.  She soon comes unstuck in the sandals when walking around Stone Henge and later changes into her more practical (well...) red outfit.

And well...
here we are:

I've been low-key thinking about this outfit for a few years thinking if I ever saw a similar blouse in a charity shop, I'd buy it. And so, last year, I saw this Nine by Sienna Miller blouse in my local charity shop for £6 and it made me think of Romana.  Funnily enough, I then saw the linen trousers (brand new by Poetry brand) for £4 just before Christmas and I took a punt on them being a close enough match.
As you can see, they're NOT a total match but close enough for me.

Both garments are super comfortable and lightweight. Would I get away with wearing this entire outfit outside of cosplay? Do I look like I'm wearing scrubs? Hmmm...

This black stretchy belt is a Primark one I've had for at least a decade and the gold sandals were bought from the same shop back in around 2011-12 for my role as Lucia in The Boys from Syracuse - interestingly, I wore this EXACT shade of material with them- a large sheet of material which I cut a hole in the neck and wore with a belt. Sadly, I donated the material to the music camp costume store otherwise I realise I could have made the outfit from them (well, maybe not!). I did have high heeled silver sandals similar to the real ones but I gave them to my niece last year! No close up of my feet because no one needs to see that!
My gold bracelet was a present from a child at school a few years ago (I did forgot to wear my gold neck chain but I don't think you'd see it anyway!

The final item was the Burberry flatcap.  I've kept a look out in the charity shops but seen nothing suitable. Even online, anything true Burberry was scarce or super expensive.  This cap was a 'Beige tartan flat cap' which I found for  £1 from Vinted (with fees and postage, it ended up costing me around £4)

I didn't attempt to copy this pose below (above, yes) but it worked out quite well! I should have taken it near my convex antique mirror!

It was fun to put this together and I liked that  I found the main items all serendipitously except for that cap!

What do you think?  Do you dislike this outfit as much as the die-hard Romana fans or do you like it? Which elements work for you? Which don't?!

TARDIS Tuesday- Romana from Shada

Hello there!

What beautiful weather has now arrived! This is a common occurence in September!

It has been a rather busy and lovely weekend!  More on that soon.

For TARDIS Tuesday, I realised it has been over 4 years since I shared this particular inspiration outfit. It is one I loved and needed no modification although I HAVE modified something- nothing new acquired but I did decide to wear something slightly different.  Here is my previous post for comparison- I'd be interested to see which version you prefer.

It was a historical outfit worn by 4th Doctor companion and fellow Gallifreyan- the Timelady known as Romana.  Played by the beautiful Lalla Ward (who actually married Tom Baker!), she wore a series of quirky and fun outfits, some that looked Edwardian. She wore it in famous episode Shada.  This was supposed to be a murder-mystery set in Cambridge colleges but it was never finished due to Strike action at the BBC. We only have part of the episodes filmed.  The rest was read with pictures and remade with cartoons for BBC video and DVD.

Have a look at this beauty!

Here's my 2023 version. Slightly older Kezzie, shorter hair, slightly different outfit:

I started with the lacy top which was actually a dress- £2 from the charity shop 4 years ago.  It's very pretty and one of these days, I will wear the dress in its own right rather than a blouse.

The hat was an ASOS one I have had for a very long time, a miniature boater which I embellished with a Cherry brooch that CBC bought me and some white flower hair clips. I think if I did it again, I would have pinned up the sides of my hat...and found some  cow parsley to embellish with
Two things I did differently this time were that I looked at Romana's skirt which seemed to have a patterned blue tinge to it so I decided to wear my FabIndia @ Anokhi skirt instead. Do you think it works better than my white one?

Last time, I just wore a piece of thin red ribbon round my neck as the choker whereas this time (I couldn't find it), I wore one of our old dance school headbands (every grade had a different coloured headband so you could distinguish between the different level children in our class)- it used to be Grade 3 then became the Grade 5 headband. The red belt (Poundland ancient) was the same. I did consider wearing a red scarf but decided not to.

I thought it would be fun to try and recreate this photo of Romana in a punt. It took several attempts of pressing the self-time then throwing my self down onto the cushions, adjusting my hat, picking up the book, arranging my legs and then lifting my skirt slightly...all in 10 seconds!

I do hope all is well with you and you are enjoying the sun! I shall be in school, trying to get my room back into order!

TARDIS Tuesday- Romana from the Stones of Blood

 Hi y'all!

I am returning to an old favourite for TARDIS Tuesday.  An old favourite that was never quite right!

I have attempted this outfit 3 times. In 2022, 2019 and 2017.

It was worn by the wonderful Mary Tamm who played our first ever companion Time Lady who travelled with the Doctor in the TARDIS in the role of Romana. She joined for a 6 episode season entitled The Key to Time.  I really like these six stories as I absolutely love a sort of treasure hunt programme. My favourite childhood TV series was T-Bag which was all about the search for some sort of trinklets or other!

This outfit was worn in the 3rd story, The Stones of Blood which took place on Earth and was set around some standing stones which turned out to be of Alien origin.

Romana wore a couple of outfits but this one is my favourite:

You can see it in all these different images.

And here is the, I am pretty sure, final regeneration of this outfit (see what I did there??)
This length of hair is the best match I've had for all the times I have attempted this outfit.
I started with the red gypsy tiered skirt which took a lot of searching when I bought it back in 2019.  I've rolled it up a bit this time to make it more of a match for Mary Tamm's one AND if I wore this to cycle in, I might avoid mangling the hem like I did last time I wore it!
My ancient eYe Italian boots are just about visible underneath.
The newest addition to this outfit is the top! I just couldn't quite get the top right but I think I am pretty much there on both the colour, shape, features and fit of this one now. It is originally from New Look but was purchased for £4 in the charity shop a while back. It is very comfortable and I've already worn in another combination.

Maybe the next time I wear this, I might try to make a DIY Key to Time detector to brandish for the picture. It seems a bit strange to wear 2 shades of red like this but I do think it works. Do you?

TARDIS Tuesday- Romana and the stones of Blood

This week, for TARDIS Tuesday, I decided to go back to a favourite Classic Who outfit worn by Romana, the clever Time Lady companion who joined him in his quest for the Key to Time. She wears this outfit in a great episode called The Stones of Blood which deals with Stone circles!

I last attempted this outfit in 2019 and 2017.

It's a very comfy outfit. I wore it on a Sunday and when we went for a walk.
I started with this second hand red gypsy skirt which, like my shoes yesterday, was damaged by getting caught on my bike but this case, getting chewed up by the cogs! It's got a slight hole at the hem with some bike grease stains.Sigh.

The top was charityshopped a couple of years ago.  It's from Select I think. Whilst it's not quite a match for Romana's, it has the correct vibe.
You can't really see my feet but I wore brown ankle boots as opposed to knee-high ones.

Not much else to say. Hope you are well!

xx

TARDIS Tuesday- Romana's sailor style from The Leisure Hive

I'm very excited to share my TARDIS Tuesday this week.  This is an outfit which is VERY much idiosyncratic Kezzie (check out my Sailor chic posts- all 25 of them!) and is a TARDIS Tuesday I did a simple version of this outfit here which was my restarting of TARDIS Tuesday posts back in 2017

Here's a fan video of the episode showing the outfit I've selected, worn by my favourite Classic Who companion, Romana!

I've taken the liberty of borrowing some images and pairing myself with Romana in them.

Images borrowed from

And here they are:
This is definitely a 'better' version of this outfit than last time and I'm really happy with it!
I started off with a Breton-striped top from H&M Kids.  I have numerous Breton-striped tops but this one is closest to Romana's.

My knicker bockers (if you can call them that? Cropped trousers?) are in fact, PAJAMAS!  They are from M&S and came with a navy coloured t-shirt.  I DID buy them with this outfit in mind but when I bought them in 2020, I did want some new PJs! I can't tell you how many years it took to find something resembling these trousers she wears! I was only low-key searching though...

Ah...the hat!  It's a charity shopped one bought back in 2010 or so and is the same one as last time!
I like Romana's pictures as she is usually smiling in them and she has a lovely smile- one that isn't too dissimilar to my natural smile! Unlike most of Yaz's or Clara's pictures in which they look moody and brooding.

Ah...I spoke too soon! Cue gourmless facial expression!

I remembered we had a football which we found in our garden and weren't sure where it came from so I used it as a prop. And my cycling gloves!

My sailor jacket was bought second hand from Zara and cost me £3.00 and it was the final piece in this outfit. My long sailor coat is just too tight for me now and I did so want a sailor jacket, even if it isn't the same as Romana's, it is similar enough. I added a red ribbon which came from something or other, maybe even a Christmas present.

Oh...and finally, I wore my red-sequined Toms shoes which did well as a substitute.

I did catch my neighbour looking out the window as I took photos the other day and felt HIDEOUSLY embarassed!!!

TARDIS Tuesday- Romana from The Armageddon Factor

This TARDIS Tuesday is one that is quite special to me- it's probably my first obvious and deliberate Doctor Who cosplay I ever did.

When I was a teenager, I began to like Doctor Who and I collected Classic Doctor Who videos.

One of my favourite stories was the 4th Doctor adventure entitled The Armageddon Factor- it was a whole season story arc where the Doctor (and the first Time Lady travelling in the TARDIS), and Romana were searching for The Key to Time.

Romana, his companion, wore a series of amazing outfits.  My favourite look of hers was this one from the final episode of the Key to time arc.

https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/208361920238884614/

This amazing dress was a white midi dress featuring lettuce/handkerchief hem and sleeves with points and white boots- it was so glamorous and beautiful.
Dear family friend, Norma, had offered to make me a dress for my orchestra concerts,  We always had to wear long black dresses. I asked her if she could fashion one based on Romana's dress. I believe I was 16 at the time.
She agreed and watched the Armageddon factor with me to take notes and look at Romana's dress.

She made the dress for me which I wore.... Alas, it looked rather more Morticia Addams in black, than Romanavoratredelundar (Fred for short!) but it was so good of her to make it for me.

I hadn't worn the dress for a good few years- I found it quite restrictive to play the viola in (which is what I wore it for) and the material made me rather sweaty, so I didn't wear it for years and years but it was a lovely thing.

I thought it would be lovely to wear it for TARDIS Tuesday and indeed I have intended to wear it for a few years.  Luckily, it still fits me....just!

I would love to wear this dress in white but you know, I don't really have much call for such a glamorous, costumey white dress!

It's lovely when I wear or see things like this, that Norma made, especially now she is deceased (4 years ago this week

Next time I have a winter concert, I will wear it again! Oh when will that be!?

What do you think?
