TARDIS Tuesday - Vicky Pallister in The Rescue

This week for TARDIS Tuesday, I had a little help from my friends....and family!

This is a TARDIS Tuesday I have wanted to do for aaaaaaaaaaages.

Vicki Pallister was a companion to the 1st Doctor, William Hartnell and was a replacement for Carole Ann Ford who played the Doctor's Grand daughter, Susan. She first appeared in The Rescue where the Doctor and his companions rescue her from Koquillian, a sinister-looking alien on the planet Dido.  However, all is not what it seems, nor is Koquillian....

She wears a cute black turtle neck dress with gold braiding in zigzags on the neck, along with grey tights and black boots.  It was seen in Black and White but I found this recolourised picture of her outfit.

The Ultimate Guide to the Fashion of Doctor Who

I've been seeking the ideal dress in a charity shop for a good few years to adapt for this costume as it is so cute and I want to thank my friend Tamsin and her incredible blog for alerting me to this cute outfit.
I found a dress that I thought would work for this outfit about a year ago or so in a charity shop but needed to find suitable habadashery itemage. This was found a while back.  Then finally, my wonderful friend Ang, was the missing link between me being too scared to ruin the dress with my appalling hand-sewing (I tried pinning some ribbon but then got scared about how to proceed.  When I met Ang 2 weeks ago, I gave her the dress and braid and she very kindly agreed to sew it for me.  I wanted to buy some of her gorgeous decorations (so reasonable, very eco-friendly and beautiful! Do buy some if you can- they are to pay a dentist bill!) so they could travel in a package together. Ang said that the sewing was a good distraction from her sad family news. Thank you Ang for doing this for me and sending it so quickly too! It arrived on Thursday night!

On Sunday, I went to my niece's 12th family birthday party and wore my outfit since I knew there would be ready photographers (plus it's cosy and comfortable.) and ended up having a hilarious photo session with my little sister acting as photographer and director and my Mum acting as assistant to the Director and hair adjuster! We had a really funny time as we worked our way through the series of poses I had pictures of Vicki in.

Enjoy!

I don't seem to have ANY sensible shots with the outfit so enjoy the only one that is semi-complete

Not  the most flattering picture but you can see the whole outfit featuring my dress plus some ancient grey Tesco F&F leggings AND some quite old M&S velvet stretchy pull-up fabric boots.
I attempted to recolour the photos in black and white to try and emulate these two ones. A lot of hair tucking in and requests to open or shut my mouth more ensued on the first one.  Mum was enlisted to help with the second one. I wish she had put her head up! I didn't realise at the time since I was being made to look the other way. A, my sister, laughed and asked me if my muscles were hurting as I was made to adjust my squat position!
You can see colour a bit more in the scream post.  We finally worked out the hand and arm position was behind her body after about 60 photos where my director was not happy with the hand position!

I realise all these pictures make me look hagged and double-chinned but it was so funny taking these, I don't care!

Thank you to Ang, A and Mummy for their help in this one! It was fun to have help which wasn't a grumpy, reluctant CBC who gets huffy after about 2 pictures!

What do you think?!

A Pause for Advent 2021 #1 Listen

This year, as Ang has lots going on, Kirsten is hosting- thank you Kirsten as it isn't Advent without this!

A Pause for Advent has always been a chance for us to sit back and prepare for Christmas amongst all the hustle and bustle of life preparing for Christmas which can often get really busy.

This week, I want to think about that...sitting back. I STILL have that wonderful anticipation and excitement for Christmas that I always have done since being a child- I love the build up to Christmas- the Advent service, the music, the concerts, the rehearsals, the special meals, the sending of Christmas cards, the excited chats about plans, the arrangement of meetings. I am so grateful that I have that.  That excitement and familiarity that comes from knowing that it Christmas is coming  and Christ is coming, as he has always come, will never fade and that singularly keeps me going and never getting tired of the traditions. I don't put up loads of decorations, nor buy loads of expensive presents for loads of people (although I do buy presents) and I don't actually go to that many Christmas dos, but I do enjoy listening to others and their excitement so in preparation for Advent this year, I want to listen to other people, take the time to hear their plans, hear their excitement or indeed, sorrows or worries, if that is where they are.  So for me, my first pause for Advent is to remind me to listen.

Listen to the messages of the season.

Listen to God and what he might be saying.

Listen to those who want to rejoice!

Listen to those who want to reminisce and share memories.

Listen to those who are worried.

Listen to the needs of the world and pray for them.

Listen to my body and don't push it when it is tired.

Listen to my friends.

and finally,

Listen to the myriad examples of beautiful music that so many people in so many people over the years have been inspired to write over their joy and rapture at this wonderful season.

Right now, I am enjoying the John Rutter Christmas album.

Christmas definitely isn't Christmas without Rutter!

I hope you enjoy any opportunities you take to listen this week.

From the archives: Possibly the most sinister book cover ever!

I love looking back at old posts, particularly from the Golden Age of Blogging (remember when the comments were plentiful and we all had the time to visit everyone's blogs!) .

This post was one from my visit to Barter Books in Alnwick and I found this scary book cover. The comments were hilarious too!

Enjoy...especially if you weren't here first time round!

Possibly the most sinister book cover ever...

Last week, I revisited the wonderful Barter Books in Alnwick, Northumberland and had a very jolly time.  I'll write more about that soon.  But, I had to share this book cover I sighted. It was prominently displayed in a craft section of books.

Seriously, That. Is. One. Scary. Doll.

Doll massacre dot com.

Surely the thing of nightmares!??!?!

  7. As a little girl, I love to dress doll and comb their hair. i talked to them as if they were real little girls or babies. I really can't judge this book by the cover To me I see a broken doll and one that has probably been repaired.

Funny how a crazy movie of a haunted doll can play tricks with our mind.
I agree it's not the best book cover. Perhaps they should have included someone's hands holding some tools repairing the damaged doll.

Happy things last week

A few lovely things from the past week or so. I've felt really quite sad and gloomy at times this past week but there have been many bright times despite this.

1.  Tuesday, whilst waiting by the school office with my remaining choir members who parents were tardy, all of a sudden, I heard my name called from the gate.  It was a past pupil of mine who is now 17 and in year 12.  He is one my most favourite pupils of all time so I ran down to the gate for a catch up. I love the fact that he was there with his cool girlfriend, aged 17 and chose to call out my name when he saw me some 12 metres away by the office. We had a quick catch up and I said to him, "I will never forget you." to which he replied, "And I will never forget you Miss.". I was SO happy to see him and the fact he said that, was so lovely.

2.  I received a message from the mother of a child. I think I wrote about how he had become transfixed by the Bagpipes last December and said he wanted to learn them.  I told his mum at the time and she had been interested.  Fast forward to July this year and she was late one day and I was standing with him. When she arrived, I asked her if she had thought about signing him up for music lessons.  She said yes, but had been disorganised and forgotten about it.  When we asked him what he was interested in, he said, "Bagpipes" which wasn't an option so I suggested the oboe as a good starting point.  They signed up and he'd been playing the oboe since the half term holiday. She messaged me on Wednesday to say that he absolutely LOVES the oboe and practises every day and wants to show her his notes and she is really proud of his dedication. That message meant so much to me because that thing happened because of my lessons.  Giving him access to hearing and seeing something led to that! It was a great feeling.

3.  The messages keep coming over the past  3 weeks where parents ask if it is too late for their child to join choir.  It's really exciting that they want to join and that their parents want them to!

4.  Happy Year 4's.  It was totally worth the hideous amount of time it took to locate and move 25 'exotic' instruments, including Harmoniums, mbiras, Angklungs, violins, mandolins, timpani, metallophones, xylophones, guitars, harps, hand bells and all sorts for my 1 off lesson allowing them experience of accompanying songs with different drone instruments.  Everyone was hugely positive and excited by it.  It is usually time consuming setting up that lesson in my own music room but as you can imagine, finding and doing that in a different building was a nightmare...but worth it!

5. Meeting my lovely blog friend Ang! Still smiling!

6.  A very productive Gamelan rehearsal.  I've been struggling in gamelan for the past 2 week as I'd missed so many sessions and didn't know my part and no one who plays my part was there last week so this time, I spent an hour or so watching videos of our teacher in Bali playing the piece and I transcribed my part. What a difference at the rehearsal- I knew it and when I got stuck, I could look down at my notebook! It was especially crucial as the person who knows the part was away again. Another fun part was that we played Baris,  piece I know very well and I had great fun playing the Reyong which I haven't touched for years! Also, I went secretly dressed as Patrick McGoohan from the Prisoner and it was funny!

7.  Had a lovely relaxing Saturday with CBC. We went to an Eco-fair and had a mooch around the shops. I found a lovely 3/4 length Autograph M&S cashmere cardigan in the charity shop for £5 which was very exciting!

8.  Had a hysterical time with a child tonight after choir. His mum was late picking up and he was talking about being a Russian spy and suddenly noticed some teachers in a meeting in the classrooms by the office. I had the 'bright idea' of us being spies and launched into 'Mission Impossible' whilst we cavorted over to the window- a hilarious spell of us acting like total loons (and excellent acting skills!) as we acted like comical spies working our way along all the windows.  We were laughing so much by the time we finished.

9.  Happy time with my Year 5-6 choir tonight.  Fun rehearsal and they are doing really well with my Ring out the Bells song from a few years ago.

10. Yay, after my aforementioned Year 4 lesson on Friday where I allowed the children to play the violin, there are 3 new signups for the violin in school! All very capable children!

11. We had the most hilarious- time in the staff room at lunchtime last week where someone chucked a piece of balled up foil at another colleague.  We then ended up having an en masse game of Pigeon hole ball where everyone tried to get the ball of foil into someone's pigeonhole. The deal then was that you had to secretly buy a tiny present for the person whose pigeonhole the ball went into.  It was so much fun. We had such a wonderful time, we laughed so much and there was such a sense of comradery

12. Got some great books for the School library in the charity shops on the past few Saturdays very reasonably. I've read a few to vet them and they were really good!

13.  Nice morning hugs with CBC this morning. He texted to me to say Thank you for warm, morning hugs which was lovely as I was thinking the same.

14.  Had another fun time with the City of London Symphonic Winds on Sunday afternoon. I was really grateful to join them again!

15. My Year 3 recorders are starting to make progress and today, lots of the children tried to help others put their fingers in the right place the way I usually do when I was unable to get to them (tight table formations!)  Other two classes weren't too bad on Monday either.

16.  Lovely Selective-mute boy who began speaking to me and singing in class at the end of last year (after me teaching him for 1.5 years without either of those things...doesn't really speak to any other adults) , today, told me what he was drawing in our music lesson and when I delightedly repeated what he said, he gave me the most beautiful smile.  It makes me happy that he trusts me enough to speak to me!

17.  Kind colleague who I was talking to about how anxious I felt yesterday was really sweet to me. I like her a lot. She's definitely my kind of person and like me, doesn't have class (but is only part time) and is also really fed up by not having a proper working space with the building situation. Empathy is important.

18.  Every child in Year 2 can play London's Burning on their glockenspiels!  One bright shining thing was that a little autistic boy who doesn't really join in much in music and can't communicate by speech (unless prompted), learnt to play it totally by himself correctly without any help! I was so delighted and glad for him. His face shone when I told him how impressed I was.

19.  In year 5, we were learning how to improvise and create interesting drum rhythms and the children seemed to have lots of fun doing that and actually, some of the children who have struggled with the work this term, did a really good job. Nice to see them shine!

20.  I bought a tray of mince reduced for Quick sale in the CO-OP in July and I got it out of the freezer on Monday as I wanted to clear the freezer.  When I was feeling miserable on Tuesday, it was the best thing to know I could come home and make Spaghetti bolognaise which I never eat as CBC doesn't eat meat (usually....occasionally).  Very much enjoyed it.

21.  Pickled Onion Monster Munch. Enough said.

I have a good life in so many ways but that doesn't stop me from getting sad and worried about things.  Finding all the happy things always helps!

TARDIS Tuesday- Arachnids in the UK

This week for TARDIS Tuesday, I thought I'd revisit an outfit I wore in March 2020, the week before lockdown began. It was Mothering Sunday and CBC and I went to meet my mum for a walk.

I thought I'd photograph it on Saturday as I was planning to wear the pink heart jumper featured so I just needed to put the rest of the outfit together.

I wore it to go with CBC to an Eco-fair in Leigh-on-Sea.

But let's have a look at the original:

Image borrowed from:

I struggled to find a full-length photo of Yaz in her outfit.

Screen shots I took from the episode.

https://tvline.com/2018/10/28/doctor-who-recap-season-11-episode-4-giant-spiders-donald-trump/
Image borrowed from above.

She wears a pink heart jumper from Mint Velvet, her ubiquitous All Saints brown leather jacket, black skinny jeans and then some pink Adidas trainers plus her hair in space buns!

And here's my interpretation.
I have the same jumper as Yaz which I managed to get for about £8 around January 2020 and I wore my Clara River Island jacket. Add my ASOS black trousers (also second hand) and finally my white Adidas trainers which my Stepdad gave me because he didn't like wearing them (we have the same sized feet).

I did try space buns but only one side refused to stay up so I took them down and just kept side bunches.

In Leigh, we were going to the cycling shop to get CBC's bike after a repair and I noticed the Conservative club's doors were very TARDIS blue-looking.  So I persuaded CBC to take a picture of me outside the doors!  A bit of bad editting in Publisher from Yaz's picture above and then I had my own TARDIS!

I tried a side-by-side to recreate Yaz's pose, not sure why I went blurry!

It was a comfy outfit for a trip out and the jacket being fairly light meant I didn't get too hot in the Eco-fair but it kept the wind out.

What do you think?

Hope you are well!

An exciting Blogger meet up!

I count myself as really lucky that I have been fortunate enough to meet up with quite a few of my blog friends in real life:

UK bloggers- Sophie and Hazel, who I've met a few times, Vix, Ellie, Melanie, Denise, Anna (technically international!), I even met Sharon on my way to work (I was crossing the road in front of her car and she stopped and called out to me!)

American bloggers Lily and Lauren, who used to blog both studied in the UK for a short time so I got to meet them.

There are still lots of you that I would LOVE to meet but the one I most wanted to meet was Ang.  We've become friends in real life, Ang has been a kind and dear friend offering support to me through difficult times and a wonderful cosplay sewing darling, adapting various garments to me. If you don't read her blog, it is the most interesting, varied and educational blogs, as well as being full of heart.

Ang very recently suffered a loss when her cousin died and she went to help out her elderly auntie and nephew/cousin (help, I get confused with cousin relationships!).

I asked Ang if she would like to meet up whilst she was with her auntie, as I was aware that she might want something nice to look forward to at a hard time, at the same time, not wanting to intrude or detract from the situation.

To my delight, she was really eager to meet up and then Tuesday night, we met!

We met up at the station.  I got late out of school because a parent was very late picking up their child from choir and then I had to move all the tables and chairs back  in the corridor as well as locate my coat and then hotfooted it to the station.  I was all hot as I lumbered down the stairs at the station at my destination to meet Ang.

It was SO exciting to meet her in real life and it felt entirely normal!  We had a massive hug and then headed to Costa to have a drink (and a sneaky After 8 Mint muffin!).

The hour and a half we had to chat before Costa closed was so lovely and went all too quickly. We chatted about lots of things and I felt so at ease and happy to finally meet my friend at last.  It was lovely to hear news about Auntie Peggy who I had met and to talk about lots of things in real life.

Ang very kindly bought me along 2 beautiful pairs of earrings, one funky coffee mugs and then the best, a pair of Cybermen earrings from Doctor Who which belonged to Gill, Ang's recently deceased, lovely cousin, who also liked Doctor Who.  They were a really touching, sweet and very apt present from Julian, to say thank you to me for when I visited Peggy. I was so touched and of course, instantly donned them!  I gave Ang a jacket I'd found her in a charity shop that I thought was very her as well as returning a book to her she'd lent me!

Handily, Ang was going to take on another cosplay project for me so I bought it along to pass onto her.  She's already completed it so I hope to share it with you soon!

Funnily enough, we were both wearing Breton stripes and Seasalt raincoats (sadly, I WASN'T wearing my matching one to hers!)

I was smiling from ear to ear all evening as I returned home and only regret that it was under sad circumstances that we got to meet. Definitely, my November highlight!

Thank you Ang, for taking the time to meet me and braving the wilds of East London at night to meet up!
xx

TARDIS Tuesday- Amy Pond in the Time of the Angels

It's been 6 years since I last cosplayed this particular Doctor Who inspired outfit! Is that the longest between one on here? You can see it here, before my posts even the nomenclature of TARDIS Tuesday on this blog.

Source

Last time I wore it, it was a closet cosplay using items I had in my wardrobe anyway.  I wore a dull red zipped hoodie, a black skirt, grey tights and black Converse shoes. It's a comfortable outfit.

This time, one item was purchased specifically for this outfit, the others were all in my wardrobe.

Here I am next to Amy!

I didn't intend putting together this outfit but I went into the spare room to look for a Clara dress I am swapping with another cosplayer on Saturday and in the same bag, I found this red  Primark hoodie I had bought from Oxfam for £4 a couple of months ago.  It struck me that it would be a comfortable Saturday outfit and it could be my TARDIS Tuesday this time.

Next, I found my black skirt which I wore last time. This was given to me by my work colleague who was moving back to Canada back in 2014.
I couldn't find the grey tights I wore last time but realised that even more comfortable would be the grey leggings I have.

When I went to search for my  black  and red Converse high tops in the under stairs cupboard, I could only find ONE of them!
Disaster!  So I went upstairs to look in the spare room cupboard and to my delight, discovered...
I actually had BLUE Converse hightops with a TARDIS handpainted on them!
I'd completely forgotten that my penpal K (who used to blog) had sent me these for Christmas last year!

There is an interesting story behind these shoes.  K is very creative and has large size 9 feet.  She finds it hard to buy interesting shoes in her footsize and so had taken to buying grey Primark plimsols and drawing designs on them in Sharpies- she's made Octopi, rainbows and clouds, dinosaurs and other delights.  I told her I loved them and it would really cool if one day, she could make me some as a fellow bigfoot!  She was very excited to do so but I said I wanted to use more ethical brand Toms to make mine so I was going to keep a look out for some second hand.
In the meantime, she got together with a lovely man in Lockdown (they were friends but had fallen for each other!) and they'd subsequently moved in together.  Both had 1 bed flats and needed to combine into one so both needed to ruthlessly cull possessions. During the cull, she found these in his cupboard.  These were actually the shoes he wore for his wedding to his ex-wife as she was a Who-fan!  He wasn't a fan but agreed to do that for her (ha, CBC would NOT do that for me!) and these had been handpainted for him.  He'd never worn them again and obviously, not being a Who fan and having split with his wife, didn't want them so K, discovering they were MY footsize, sent them to me for Christmas!
Isn't that perfect! They were second-hand, hand-painted AND unwanted, helped someone unclutter, were found a week or so before Christmas AND they turn out to be Screen accurate Amy Pond shoes (I didn't realise this till now!)

I came down the stairs wearing this on Saturday. CBC looked me up and down.
"Is that a Doctor Who outfit?" he asked.
"Why?  Do you not like it?" I retorted.
"No, I like it, it's cute." he acquiesed.
"It IS a Doctor Who outfit!" I blurted gleefully.
"I knew it! Is it Amy Pond?" he laughed.
"Yes!"
"I'm starting to recognise the outfits now!"

It was a fun but comfy outfit to wear on a Saturday trip to town and meant I was ready for TARDIS Tuesday.

Given that 2 out of the four items I am wearing were gifts and the hoodie was £4 and the leggings £6 from Tesco back in about 2012, the cost of the outfit was very reasonable.

What do you think?

Hope for the world's despair

This beautiful video was shared as part of our Remembrance Sunday service today at church and I thought it was beautiful.

Back in 2018, ten new hymns were written to mark the centenary of Armistice Day and the end of World War 1. One of these was Hope for the World's despair which was the winner of Jubilate's Hymns of Peace competition. The writer was Ally Barrett.  More information can be found here and the songs can be downloaded.

The lyrics are beautiful and very appropriate for today and for our world as it is and the singer is wonderful!

I hope you enjoy it!

Be the change- eco actions for the person who wants to make small changes to help #1

 Hi there,

I have been meaning to write some small actions and things that I find have worked for me to try and make a change in terms of environmental awareness and doing something.  Many of the things I try to do may not make a huge impact but I strongly believe in EVERY little action mattering and absolutely refuse to bow down to the doubters who maintain that the little things don't make a difference and only largescale leader-led change is worth doing.  Yes, we do need leadership to show us that (and the stinking Tories are not any sort of leadership that I have much faith in) but we all should do things.  One person can do something and eventually it can inspire all of us.   I may be teaching Grandmother to suck eggs, so forgive me if you do any of these, but I still think someone, somewhere may gain something from sharing ideas.

Be the composter at work:

Food waste and putting food into the regular bin is one way that our Carbon emissions are raised.  At my work, I started collecting my used teabags in a small box and I used to bring them home to rip open and put them straight onto my raised bed.  I also always bought home all my food waste, no matter how inconvenient it was.  This year, I decided to try and offer other staff members the option to put their fruit and veg food waste in my box.    I saved one of those large party-size plastic tubs that sweets or chocolate come in and I've invited anyone in the staffroom who I see with banana skins or apple cores or anything they don't finish to put it in the box as well as any teabags.  I do also do some bin diving if I see any teabags or banana skins etc. I'm not too proud to do this, nor too prissy. I think DOING something is more important. All I need to do is wash my hands after doing that.  It sits in a cupboard above the work top in the staffroom.  Then, once a week, I bring it home to put the things into compost bin.  I clean the tub and bring it back on a Monday. It's easy and I've got into the habit of doing this. Today, I came home with a box of discarded strawberries from the bin to add to my compost.

Even if you don't want to do food waste, a teabag collection box would be small and easy to manage.

What if you don't have a compost bin?  Well, you could still rip open the teabags and put them straight onto the earth in your garden. The worms will soon take it down and deal with it.

If you don't have a compost bin but DO have local food waste, you could put it in that. Obviously, I do have a garden.  Don't have a garden? Do you have a large plant or a balcony with plants? Empty the leaves into the plant pot.  Don't have a plant? Why not empty the tea leaves into a pot (discard the paper outer) Is there anywhere wild near you where you could empty a tub of tea leaves into the earth?

I don't drive and I carry this with me so it is possible to do this without a car.

Doing repetitive small actions like this is really good for your mental health and sense of well-being. I get such a joy out of making this small difference. I don't want this to seem like virtue-signalling (like me, me, me, I'm so good... PLEASE, I don't want to hear, "You are so good!" in the comments which is what always happens when I share things like this and that's NOT why I do it.)- I just want to share an idea and make a suggestion for something that can make you feel really happy to be doing. I never feel helpless in the face of the climate  and plastic crisis because I know I am trying and doing a few things. I only hope I can inspire someone to make a change or say, "Yes, I am willing to do  THAT little something."  Because, perhaps  you might then inspire other people to try it. And that's when things become normalised and attitudes and actions can change on a large scale.

Have a lovely day.

xx

TARDIS Tuesday - Yaz Khan in the Series 13 promo!

Greetings Blogglings!

Hope you are well. I am feeling much better after a tasty dinner cooked by CBC and some Sewing Bee. Got to admit I felt a bit miserable today. My year 3-4 choir were really hard to control and I spent most of the rehearsal trying to get them to shut up! The corridor I am doing choir in is very long and thin and cramped for 25 children and about 12 of them forgot their song sheets and the extra sheets I had copied just in case, I realised in retrospect, were still in the photocopier!

Anyway, I don't want to moan because I feel like that's all I do at the moment in school (yes, still hating the room situation) but it is hard.

Anyway, onto TARDIS Tuesday.

Last week, I shared my version of Yaz's outfit from the Series 13 pilot episode.

This week, I am sharing the outfit that Yaz wear in one of the first series 13 promo pictures.

Here's Mandip Gill looking cool whilst Jodie Whittaker and Dan Bishop have a giggle.

She's wearing her trademark leather jacket and a black and red spotty blouse.  Black trousers are accompanied with a brown belt.

And here's my looking miserable.  Can't do that type of facial expression.

Ah, that's better, there's a smile.
I'm wearing an entirely second hand outfit except for my Clarks boots.
The same £3 fake leather jacket from last week and some black ASOS trousers.  My Mum's vintage leather belt and finally the blouse. One of the Doctor Who cosplay community IDed this as being a Topshop shirt and I found one pretty swiftly.
It's not my type of material, being synthetic but I LOVE the big sleeves!  So comfy to wear and looks a bit 80's but in a cool way!  Sans the leather jacket, this was the perfect school outfit to wear yesterday.

I wonder if we will see this outfit crop up in one of the episodes this series or was it just for the promo?

Hopefully choir with Year 5-6 will be less stressful tomorrow!
Hope you had a good day.
