What is it? #65 - The coat that wasn't a coat!

I was at my Mum's back at the start of June, staying the night.  As I was reading and just about to go to bed, I looked down to the end of my bed to where a camel-coloured coat of my Mum's sat folded with a purple crocheted hat sitting on top.  Except, I didn't just see a coat...

What do you see in the image above?  Do leave a comment sharing what you saw!

What about last time?

From an episode of "The Twits."
If you recall that I served CBC an experimental dinner using some odds and ends from the garden including chive flower petals. He saw the above chive petal and was HORRIFIED as he didn't know what it was and only saw that it strongly resembled a TINY MOUSE!  He didn't believe me at first that it was a chive flower petal and sent a Whatsapp to his family saying, "This is it- we are like Mr and Mrs Twit- Kezzie is feeding me Baby mice secretly!  I totally saw it too!

What did you lot think it was?

  4. Easiest one yet, definitely a mouse (sorry to be eating that CBC!) I see the lion too in the cloud, then totally saw a dragon like creature with a large eye when I looked below that. Brilliant!

  5. it looks like a flower to me, sorry can't see anything else.

  6. I see a tiny mouse.

I definitely see the eye on the last one now you mentioned it. It looks really creepy!

Little mouse and dead flower are the unanimous responses!  Ha ha! Maybe CBC had a point!

Anyway, please do leave me a comment saying what you think the coat resembles!!!

Birds and Butterflies and Blooms

Here are some birds and butterflies I have enjoyed in the last couple of weeks!

As I walked down the steps to the main high street in Aldeburgh, I saw these beautiful lilac blooms.  And a myriad contented bees.
Above, blossoming blackberries being pollinated by our bumbles.

Below, the beautiful purple blooms are irrestistible at Benjamin Britten's house.
A flower bee enjoys the alien beauty and elixir of our returning Passiflora.

A Holly Blue butterfly reclines on the blackberries.
A hover fly or wasp of some sort on the Campanula!

Our Lavender has blossomed this week and we are the proud hosts to many bees!

What a joy!

How are your bees?

Fed up with Plugged in!

You know there's a rant coming!
I am a fast walker when I walk. I also now cycle to the station but on the way to work, I need to cycle a section on the pavement on the main road to the station because the road is really narrow and the drivers are really aggressive at rush hour.  I am aware that it is not ideal that I need to cycle on the pavement for this section.  But there aren't loads of pedestrians at that time and I am always careful and either go around or jump off my bike and run in front of them.

But the fact is....I am getting increasingly tired of pedestrians who are
a) walking with ear phones in
b) walking looking down at their phone.

They have NO awareness of ANYONE around them.  I am surprised that there are not more accidents.  They also walk slower than anyone who is unplugged and somehow seem to walk right in the middle of the pavement but irritatingly veer from side to side slightly meaning it is really hard to get past them.  Why are they so oblivious to the world around them?  I always say, "Sorry, I am just nipping past you when I go past people.  The ones who are plugged in have no idea and it just makes me sad that people are not noticing the world around them.
I then look around me in the train carriage.  The other day, out of the 23 people in my section of the carriage, 19 people had earphones in. I just find it really sad.  Yes, I do look at my phone on the train (I also read), but I do have an awareness of those around me!

Let's unplug and gain some awareness of the world around us!

TARDIS Tuesday- Clara Oswald from Hell Bent

Hi there!

It's totally time for TARDIS Tuesday after a week off!
Today's inspiration is Clara Oswald's final outfit from the series 9 finale, Hell Bent.  This was a confusing episode at first.  We saw Clara seemingly talking to the Doctor in an American diner yet we all knew that Clara was dead.  How was this??
She was dressed as a waitress also- in a blue dress with white collar, cuffs and apron, worn with Converse white wedge trainers.

This is one of those particularly iconic Clara outfits, typically worn at Doctor Who conventions- because, who would wear this for any other occasion.
And here's me among the culinary herbs!

I've actually owned this dress for  a year but not really ever had an excuse to wear it.  I bought it from eBay in a fit of madness one day and to be honest, it's a pretty awful dress- it's made out of horrid Polyester and bizarrely has no buttons under the apron bit for the last bit of material and the collar refuses to sit flat.  But I couldn't send it back so I am kind of stuck with it! It looks the part, even if it feels awful!

I also managed to find her exact trainers last year, later on, for less than £10 which was great as they were brand new! I like them but...they sort of squeak when I step in them!

What do you think? I'm not imagining this is an outfit everyone's going to love as such but perhaps you will surprise me?!

Joy in all the things! (10 things to be thankful for)

A lovely girl on Instagram, MillieMakes reminded me of this.  Joy comes from actively looking at things you are blessed in.  Thanking God for all the good things in my life. I think I have been speaking very negatively about the actions and behaviours of those I teach and it doesn't help.  Yes, venting is needed but it doesn't make the situation any better. Whereas seeking the good DOES help.

Here are some things that gave me joy.

1.  Getting out into the garden on Thursday night after being cross at the actions of a child (not towards me but anger at someone else's situation).  I got right into our bamboo and spent over an hour grabbing at Bind Weed, Ivy and Brambles and freeing the Bamboo from their tyranny. Alas, the job will always be there as we cannot get onto the railway line at the back of our garden to really vanquish the beggars but at least I can try.  I felt restored when I came in. And, I only got bitten once by a horsefly rather than the usual 12 times.

2.  A gorgeous weekend in Aldeburgh with CBC and my Mother-in-Law. It was a beautiful time in so many ways.

3.  Finding an Indian vintage skirt like Vix's! Well, similar anyway!

4. Having containers just the right sizes to house all the left-over food we had in Saxmundham tonight after we were too stuffed to eat the majority of our main courses!

5. How enthusiastic the kids all sang at the Lion King rehearsal on Thursday.  Having given up my PPA time to run this rehearsal for the guy who is running the show, it made it more worth it!

6.  Having an observation lesson on Friday that I KNEW went really well without a doubt. I haven't had feedback yet but I was happy with it. And it being observed by someone who understands music!

7.  COURGETTES in the garden!!!!

8. Have been eating our own Rocket this week! I don't care if CBC says Rocket grows like a weed, I am PROUD of my first attempt.

9.  On that subject, during our Listening Walk at the Snape Maltings marshes, I noticed and found a patch of Wild rocket growing and was brave enough to pick and eat a bit to prove to myself that my foraging skills were on point!

10.  Finally germinated an Bean plant after the first lot went wrong!

11. Have some lovely nights sleep in our Aldeburgh cottage despite the road resurfacing going on our road and epic steamroller action till 1am.  Past 1am, I slept like a log!

What are you thankful for?

Eco thing this week #6

Here's a round up of Eco-things I've seen, done or thought about in the last week be it successes or failures.

  • My Mum was telling me about a Sainsburys product which really annoyed her. Their Tomato and Mascapone pasta sauce used to come in a glass jar with a lid.  It now comes in a really irritating plastic pouch. She wrote to complain about it. I had the same sauce with her and decided to do the same.  Here's my email if you would like to copy and paste it and use it for any 'please change your plastic packaging' emails you want to send.

Dear Sainsburys,I am delighted to hear that you are finally starting to address the vast iceberg that is your excessive plastic use.  Well done! It was a relief to hear it! However, I would like to address one particular product which you have changed over the last few years.  Your Tomato and Mascapone Pasta saucu used to come in a glass jar with a metal lid. It was extremely easy to use and clean and recycle.  However, for some inexplicable reason, you have changed this so it now comes in an extremely irritating, not easy to clean and recycle plastic pouch. Not only is it extremely difficult to get the pasta sauce out in the first place (I loathe cutting into these pouches), it is really hard to get ALL the dregs of the sauce out and then clean it- I get sauce EVERYWHERE when I try to get all of it out- sauce goes all the way up the spoon.  When it was in a glass jar, I just had to swill a bit of hot water in the jar with the lid on and it was easy to add to the saucepan and then wash out. In addition, it is not recyclable where I live (and then it will eventually end up as microplastics).  Can I suggest that you revert to the original, very satisfactory packaging please?  In the meantime, I am buying jars of it from Aldi when I can get there as theirs still comes in glass jars.
While I am writing, can I please make another suggestion regarding plastic reduction.  Your adundant multipacks of crisps all come in massive plastic bags.  Why not make a start with your own brands by making the OUTSIDE part of your multipacks out of recycled paper. This would make a huge reduction in plastic.  This could also be applied to any chocolate biscuit multipacks too.
With all good wishes,Kerenza

  • I got this next bit from SOMEWHERE, can't remember where! Please let me know if  was you!  "SWAPPING a single-use item for another single-use item is not the answer.   We need to make a decision to try and find alternative ways of avoiding those single use items.  Every time we say yes to another plastic item, we are part of the problem. Can we be sure that the item will get to a recycling plant?  Where is it? Here in England or half-way across the planet. We need to slow down our consumption of single-use plastic. Use our voices and go to the companies. Ask them to use their wealth to change their packaging.  Sticking everything in the recycling is not going to do anything else."

  • My big fail last week was an Marks and Spencer shop.  I ordered a jumper for my Dad for his birthday from M and S.  Rather than get my free postage, I thought if I got it sent to store, then it wouldn't come in a plastic package.  Alas, when I got there to pick it up, it was in 2 plastic packets!! AHEGHGHGH!! (Cue next week's email to M&S about this).  I was, unfortunately, extremely hungry when I went into the store and I really strongly got the urge to eat antipasti like olives, sundried tomatoes and sweet peppers stuffed with cream cheese (I know, I know- first world problems).  I stupidly gave into this urge and ended up buying them- all 3 came in plastic tubs with plastic lids. I also ended up buying 2 bags of crisps (and also some chicken which came in a foil tray with cardboard lid- the only one I could find with minimal plastic.  I felt really guilty as soon as I came out of there.
  • I performed at the Cadogan Hall on Monday night for the Indonesian Embassy to celebrate 70 years of Diplomatic relations between the UK and Indonesia.  The Embassy provided us all with a delicious Indonesian meal...but everyone of the 100+ performers' meals came in a large (and I mean a 12" by 12") plastic box.  Plastic cutlery was provided in a pouch and plastic bottles of water. I was dismayed. Worse still, there were no recycling facilities in the changing rooms and I saw a bin full of them when other people were eating.  Someone picked mine up to put it in the bin but I ran over and said that I couldn't bear it going in the bin and I was going to take it home to recycle (I said this in a loud voice hoping others might do likewise...to no avail).  I put it in my bike pannier.   At the end of the evening, I went round the changing room and gathered ALL the plastic bottles which had been discarded - there were 16...mostly still full of water and I put them in my bike pannier to carry them across London and home on the train to Essex. They are still in my front room- I will be emptying them onto the garden and then recycling.  Big events are ALWAYS a problem in terms of waste. This is why I strongly dislike festivals, concerts and big sporting events because of the sight and knowledge of overflowing bins full of resources that could have been recycled if only everyone made an effort to take home their waste.  It makes me feel physically sick.  If I, a non-driver who is always carrying a million things around, can do it, so can anyone.  It makes me glad to hear that hopefully Glastonbury festival is making a huge effort with plastic waste this year.
  • Shared tips for eco-loo roll with a work colleague who is trying to make more changes.  She made me happy to hear that last Summer, they rigged up a hosepipe to a paddling pool from their bathroom to use all shower water to water their garden when we had that super hot Summer!
  • Picked up a few discarded bottles and newspapers from train seats to recycle.  Used the newspaper in my new compost bin to stop it getting so skanky!
  • Picked up a full  1 litre soda bottle which was half full of soda which was just standing in the middle of the traffic island. Managed to carry it whilst cycling.  Carried it and emptied the soda over a bush and then carried the bottle to the recycling at the station.  I now see rubbish as my problem.  Not something to tut over and expect it to be cleared up but, where I can, pick up what I can and ensure it gets to the recycling facilities.
  • Forgot my Stainless steel bottle for the Indonesian gig on Monday so found a half-drunk glass bottle of Schloer at work and took that with me to put water in.
  • Went to the Chinese again last night and took 3 plastic containers and an old carrier bag to put the food in.
  • Lidl today- put rolls from the bakery counter in an old paper bread bag from last week.  Also selected the only cheese in non-plastic- a French Brie plus limes.
  • Been using my glass bottles from the Milk and More apple juice I get each week to keep mint cuttings in to grow roots. Sharing these plants with my friends so they don't have to buy mint plants in plastic.
  • I've signed up for #Slowfashionseason.  No new clothes for 3 months- only second hand, mended, swapped... See https://www.collaction.org/projects/slow-fashion-summer-2019/129/details

  • Susie has shared a brilliant idea for your discarded chive flowers!  Apparently, if you put them in white wine vinegar it makes a lovely salad dressing!!
  • Why are BP trying to dig for oil

BP wants to ship an oil rig out to the North Sea to drill for up to 30 million barrels of oil and I am now occupying it - to shut down BP's business as usual.

At their AGM this year, BP agreed with its investors to show how the company is "aligned" with the Paris Climate Agreement - the treaty tackling climate change. So drilling for oil, when we already have more than we can afford to burn, is a pretty odd thing to do - but that's BP in a nutshell.

They say one thing and do another. Just take a look at their social media channels - it's all wind turbines and rolling hills (they even have a video of a dog running through a field with wind turbines in the background - it makes no sense). Where are the images of oil spills and carbon billowing into the earth's atmosphere?

Let's call them out publicly on their lies and green washing. Hit the button, comment on BP's social media posts and get them to tell the truth - they're tipping us over the edge into climate breakdown.
Stop BP's lies on Facebook

  • Apparently, Sainsbury's are ditching plastic bags in their bakery and fruit and veg section for loose items - see here.   Instead, there will be paper bags for Bakery and you must bring your own for the veg and fruit or buy a reusable one. Ostensibly, they are committed to reducing plastic:   plastic lids from cream pots and plastic trays from carrots and tomatoes will be considered too.  This is great news and progress BUT, unless they back it up by removing the plastic packaging that the majority of the fruit and veg comes in, then there's STILL a long, long way to go.  And the cheese wrapping, AND the ready meals, AND the pouches of cat food, AND the trays and packets of sauces.   I might still write to them.  Will you too?

  • I looked at the Recycle Now website to find out more about what the big supermarkets will recycle in terms of plastic packaging that I can't do in my home recycling, at the bigger Tescos, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Coop, Morrisons: Here's what I found:

Why are there no Aspirin in the Jungle?

Answer... because the Parrots eat 'em all!

I love jokes based on homophones or phrases that can be heard as something else!  Never grows old!

No TARDIS Tuesday today.  I haven't been wearing anything Doctor Whoish and I didn't just want to get into something for the sake of it.  So, instead, I thought I'd join in with Style Imitating Art- something I haven't done for a while.

Van Gogh’s “Still Life with Blue Enamel Coffeepot, Earthenware and Fruit”

This is the piece we are studying this time.  The Blue Enamel post is the star of the piece but the oranges and lemons feature highly.

Here is my outif

This is an outfit which I confess that I LOVE!  Although it is a bit tenuous, it does feature a dark blue as the central feature, liberally sprinkled with oranges.
This outfit is one I perhaps did not expect to share on here!

It is a jumpsuit!

I have objections to jumpsuits- namely the difficulty in visiting the bathroom in them.

But, I was in a lovely shop called Wish Boutique in Leigh-on-Seaon Saturday and they had this beautiful jumpsuit which I was curiously drawn to.  I was OBSESSEd with Scarlet Macaws as a child and my younger self is squealing at the thought of an outfit with them all over it.  Hey, my first ever charity shop purchase as a child was a white t-shirt with a sequined Scarlet Macaw on it!

I have a really nice, "Shop local," story associated with buying this.  The aforementioned shop stocks Emily and Fin clothing which I really like as they are 100% cotton, fully lined, have pockets, interesting designs and fit really well.  I own several of their dresses, most of which bought second-hand, with vouchers or as a present (except one or two)-  here are a few posts featuring them.  I'd seen a beautiful rainbow-checked shirt dress online which I loved and last time I went in this shop, they had the strappy version of that dress and I'd asked the lovely shop owner if she had the shirt dress version. She hadn't but advised me to try online from Emily and Fin direct.
When I went in on Saturday, I looked at the alternative one again and she asked me if I had managed to find the shirt dress version. I replied that I had seen it but I preferred to buy from an actual shop, rather than online.  She was really touched by my saying that.   Then I spotted the Parrot jumpsuit and tried it on.  I decided, since I am going to sign up for a Slow fashion challenge (buy nothing, mend or buy second hand), I would just buy this item as a last hooray. I also thought that I wanted to support this lovely independent shop that is so beautifully curated.  As I paid for it, grappling with my phone- She gave me my receipt and said to me, "I've given you a discount on the price,".  I looked at her surprised (having not noticed) and said, "Thank you very much - that is so kind,".  At which point, she looked at me, smiled and quietly said, "Thank YOU for shopping local."
As I left, I noticed that she had given me £6 off the price and when I checked online later, this jumpsuit was £5 more expensive online anyway. so I saved £11 by shopping local.   It was a kind gesture from her.

I can confirm that  I was superbly comfortable all day in this outfit and I felt really stylish and, shock horrors, maybe even a little on-trend (whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat/???? WHO AM I???).  The loo-going experience at my Dad's house was, I admit, a bit weird but it was fine! Not sure how I'd feel about a skanky public loo though!

If you fancy seeing how everyone else interpreted the Van Gogh- head over to Kim at Fierce Fashion blog to find out more!

What is it? #64 The "EURGH, What is that in my dinner?" edition!

Can you believe I've made 64 of these 'What is it?' posts?   It's been a while since the last one and it is high time I shared another!
If you are new to this, I share a picture in which I have seen something- perhaps a cloud, a shadow, a blemish on the pavement and seen in it, something beyond the mundane object it is in reality.
Today, the person with the vision is CBC, my husband.  We were eating dinner last night, a pasta which was a bit experimental- it had very old pesto in it (been open since Easter, shhh...), some Swiss chard bits from a plant which has totally gone to seed and fallen down in the wind and chive flowers.

Suddenly, as we were eating, CBC horrifiedly exclaimed, "KEEEEEZZZZZIE, what is this in my pasta?????"
He pointed to the central item below.
I explained that it was a chive flower petal on a bit of stalk but he was adamant it looked like something else....

What do you think that something else was???
Leave a comment below to say what you thought it was!!!!

What about last time?

Well, in this cloud-scape below, what I immediately saw was in the TOP bit of the cloud. It looked to me, like a Lion's  head profile from the side, facing right. It has a big snout and its mouth was shut and its mane was flowing out to the back.

Except, when I looked again, I saw something completely different.
Slightly below the centre of the image, is a large suspicious looking EYE of a creature with a big mop of hair on top of its head looking right at me! Its nose is pointing to the left and it has a mouth with teeth. And now I can't unsee it!

What did the illustrious commenters see?

  1. The new photo looks like the head of a menacing wolf and also I see what I could be the snout of a crocodile. I can see his menacing sharp teethes ready to snap. I'm not sure what the spiraling cloud that is forming over its head can be interpreted as but I wouldn't turn my back on that wold or crocodile.

    1. I've just looked at the photo again and now I see a wrist coming in from the left with a hand on the end. The hand is holding something with which it appears to be stabbing the thing with sharp teeth.

The comments had me laughing and TOTALLY nodding in agreement. Once someone points something out and describes me, I totally see it, especially the Trump comb-over and the hand stabbing!  But it does seem like there was a lot of agreement between you lot!  A great response to last time!  Thank you so much! The comments on 'What is it?' are the ones I am most excited to receive!

Do share what you thought!

Afternoon Tea

Do you enjoy going out for Afternoon Tea?  Would you prefer to go for Afternoon tea or a meal in a general restaurant?

I confess that I would always prefer going to a restaurant for something savoury rather than Afternoon Tea.  Whilst I quite like Afternoon Tea, I prefer to have something savoury- the sandwiches are always my favourite part of the tea!  Hazel has mentioned a Savoury Afternoon tea she had or heard about and I confess, that this does sound right up my street!

This neatly segues me into the remainder of this post.  Back on the Saturday of Half Term, CBC and I were invited out to a 30th Birthday celebration.   The first part was Afternoon Tea at Clarence Yard in Southend-on-Sea.  It cost a reasonably £19.99 for the two of us.

You can see me with the tea, minus a few sandwiches which we had already eaten. I enjoyed the sandiwiches and liked the three cakes I grabbed before CBC had a chance to make his own choice. I had the two chocolate ones and the mini cream eclair.  The part I least enjoy is always the Scones and Jam- something always makes me feel a bit queasy about it. I only managed to eat half a scone- this one had orange peel in it which I found hard-going!  Sorry, I am a bit fussy when it comes to sweet food!

For this occasion, I took another chance to wear my Easter Sunday dress from Bernie Dexter before Cherry Blossom seems 'out of season'.  I adore this dress.

It is so comfy and I teamed it with my Irregular Choice floral pumps, plus a Smile and Make necklace, a bracelet my Mum regifted to me and some cute bunny earrings a lovely Australian cosplayer sent to me when she shipped me a dress I wanted to buy from Australia!

Since these photos were taken, the Purple Toadflax behind me to the left has flowered beautifully and the Lavender is almost reaching its zenith.  The Jasmine is flowering as is the Passiflora!

I do hope you are well.

P.S.  Thank you all so much for your kind words on my last post.
