My 2 Totnes cardigans

Remember back in August, I shared a post showing what I bought on my Cornish holiday. This included 2 vintage cardigans from Totnes market.
I've been really enamoured with them and really glad I  bought them- both have already had a lot of use. I have been throwing one on each night when I get home and wearing them over whatever I have been wearing at the weekends.

Since both got worn this weekend, I thought I'd share them.
Outfit 1, worn on Saturday:
The whole outfit, bar my hat is second hand.
The Tam O'Shanter hat is Isle of Skye tartan bought on Kirkwall in the Orkneys in Summer 2016 on my cruise with Mum.
The blue top was Zara (Charity Shop), Indian skirt (CS),  Vegan blue Dr Martens (Insta 2nd hand sale), cardigan (Totnes vintage market stall) and finally the gorgeous black sheepskin (?) gilet/waistcoat (CS)- I'm not sure if the gilet is Toscana sheepskin or it is fake as it is reversible so there's no washing indication but it cost £15 in the charity shop so I'm wondering if it is genuine- it is exquisitely soft and fine and keeps me so warm. I can't tell from the smell- anyone got any ideas how I can tell apart from setting fire to a bit of it to see how it burns???  If it's real, I got an ABSOLUTE bargain- if it's synthetic, I was conned!

Saturday morning I was SO CROSS. I went to bed at around half midnight and was exhausted, having not had as much sleep as I needed this week. What time did I wake up? 5am!!!!! WHY???? I lay awake for hours until I gave up and got up around 7.40am to go downstairs to do the washing up and make tea.   After various bits of tidying and pottering, emptying the compost etc, I went to shower and CBC and I made porridge.   I then carried on with some sorting as well as a bit of reading and then decided to do my Summer/Winter wardrobe changeover. I keep the out of season clothes in 2 enormous (I mean ENORMOUS) suitcases kept in my Spare room wardrobe.  The switchover took a couple of hours and also involved some sorting and culling- managed to cull about 20-25 items- I find this hard- I like the things I own but I also like the new things.  I decided to cull some things that a) I didn't wear so much including a gorgeous Monsoon sequinned circle skirt and clothes which I find I don't enjoy wearing so much e.g. if they are too tight around the armpits, synthetic, make me sweat or I don't like the fabric so much. I have realised in recent years, I am quite hypersensitive to materials and how things fit or feel (Ha, my stepmum could have told me this - she still has nightmares about me and, quote- "That wretched white cardigan!" that I was always trying to get out of!).  However, often, I don't realise what something will feel like or how I will fear, until I've worn it for a day, or a couple of times.

I was still working on this but CBC and I decided to go out and get some lunch. We headed to one of our numerous local garden centres.  This one has a newly expanded restaurant which has been shown as being really popular. We've tried to go before but the queue was epic and the restaurant was full. Luckily, as we were going close to the end of serving, we got a table easily.  I ordered a breaded chicken escalope with garlicky chard and potatoes and CBC a butternut squash risotto.  We ordered hot chocolate and chocolate milkshake respectively. Mine was delicious although the chard wasn't super garlicky and could have been more plentiful (I'm a huge garlic AND chard fan!). CBC's was tasty but smaller than he would liked. Whilst waiting and eating, we played Qwirkle. I bought this game back in July after having bought it for my sister for her birthday and LOVING it.  CBC is always willing to play it which is an absolute bonus as usually, he's not so up for playing so many games with me!  I bought it from Mr Wolf Hexham as it was recommended to me by the WONDERFUL Mrs Wolf who I am very friendly with when I go to visit.  I have subsequently bought it from her repeatedly (SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES not BIG BUSINESSES!) via my Mother In Law when she visits or gifts- it comes in a handy little pouch so it fits in a handbag easily- it has been on every holiday with us subsequently and my Taiwanese friend LOVED it and kept asking to play in on holiday which I adored as I will play a game at any time, any place).
It was quite a tense game and the final score was
197 a piece! YES, we tied for the first time ever!
We had a quick look round the garden centre- I was tempted by some LARGE Jingle Bell garlands- they clanked like cowbells- but at £28, I decided to forgo it- would have loved them for the music room!  The garden centre is stocking Field and Fare freezer products which are unpackaged so you can bring your own container for them.  We bought some fishcakes and Chicken Kiev, frozen fish.
Back home, I sat down at the piano and FINALLY got started on my Christmas song/carol- well, I got the first chorus lyrics and melody written and the accompaniment worked out, just need to work out the verses- CBC was pitying the neighbours as there was a lot of stopping/starting and repeating the same chord over and over again as I tried things out.  To ensure neighbourly relations are peaceful, I left it there and  continued with the wardrobe changeover c;earup and sorting and later, we had some Thai food whilst watching Outer Banks on Netflix.

This morning, I got out of bed at 8.57....church starts at 9.15am.  I was at church by 9.17am having cycled!

The service was a really beautiful service and Steph who led the sermon gave such a powerful sermon.

My main two takehomes from this were:  We take each day as it comes.  In the Lord's prayer, we ask for our daily bread, not our weekly bread and we must react to God's placement  of us. Trying not to worry about next week doesn't mean the same as not being prepared for what is coming.  Also, revisiting the past and imagining different outcomes or choices can be a form of self-harm - I needed to hear that as I often end up thinking about what I should have/would have/could have done.

Had lovely chats to friends after the service, including my lovely neighbour Morris who is 97.  I took him round some Lily O'Brien chocolates 2 weeks ago as he was unwell and able to attend church and he was so grateful and said he'd never had chocolates like them before.

I came home and got started on the washing up from last night (yes, I am a slattern..) whilst listening to a lovely Radio 3 programme with Rupert Everett and his Desert Island discs  and then decided to do some sorting through the cupboards and try to get rid of some out of date baking ingredients and try and rationalise the chaotic pantry.  It's a bit better.  Chucked a few things to compost and also packed a few things for school as flour can be used for Playdough and 15 year old mung beans and aduki beans can be used to make shakers.  I then made a pot of tea and crumpets.  Next I rehoovered the floor and then washed the kitchen, utility room and hallways (they really, really needed it) as well as getting on my hands and knees scrubbing stains with sodium bicarb and an old toothbrush. I  folded up clean washing and put it away and then hoovered the living room whilst imprisoned by drying floor and polished the piano and repositioned the house plants.   CBC came home from cycling and thankfully, the floors were almost dry and he was careful (usually, he tells me not to be a drama queen when I freak out when he walks in and makes a mess).  I washed the upstairs bathroom floors and then hoovered the dry floors to pick up the extra bits that were revealed by washing and hoovered the bedroom.

I then went into the garden and pulled out the remaining tomato plants and bean plants, weeded the raised bed, pulled out the canes, raked leaves and put them onto the raised bed to mulch (wish I'd gone to collect more oak leaves from the field behind our house as there weren't enough to cover the bed...I will then put compost on top and then maybe put cardboard on top- if CBC doesn't moan - he has Opinions about things like this looking messy (even if the advice came from an expert) -picked the last pepper. I then came in and ate some brie, chutney and crackers and sang some songs and played piccolo and piano with CBC for some carols and then went to practice my piccolo for my orchestra rehearsal tomorrow (poor neighbours).  A bit more tidying and then finally, the house was looking calm and more ordered. I have found it really hard to function as the house has felt and looked so dirty and messy and I feel soothed by having done all this cleaning and sorting, even if I haven't 'rested so much

Ah, what was I wearing? Well, the OTHER Totnes cardigan of course! You read the post title right?
This is the gorgeous Alpaca Stained glass pattern one.  My bassoon-playing friend, who owns alpacas and is an alpaca wool geek, told me that this jumper probably retailed at around £400 so I got an absolute bargain for my £35 shell out.  The white top underneath was charity-shopped.  My burgundy cashmere shawl was from H&M about 14 years ago and is one of my top winter favourites.  I have always said I prefer Summer and its sartorial choices but actually, I ADORE my winter favourites and look forward to wearing them.
My black trousers are from Seasalt, bought from their EBay outlet in the Summer after my cycling accident ripped my favourite black trousers (Ang, I just haven't sent them yet!!! I just need to get everything to the post office!) - they are super comfortable and thick material. Finally, I wore my Leggero Gortex and leather boots. I bought these in October 2020 and have worn them through thick and thin, 4 winters and they are still going strong. I paid £160 which is the most I have ever paid for a pair of boots/shoes/garment but I think the cost per wear is probably in pence now as I have worn them so much. What will I do when they wear out? (which they show no signs of doing)

It's now Sunday evening and I am finally doing school work (oops, should have done before now)  before we will eat Thai left overs, but I am feeling satisfied with my weekend endeavours.

I hope all is well with you.

Circumnavigating the UK Day 9 part 2- the most wonderful Tresco Bloggers meet up!

I left you, in my last post from the cruise, at the gates to the Abbey Gardens in Tresco in the Isles of Scilly.

I had arranged to meet one of my favourite bloggers, the wonderful Anna of Anna's island style.  If you don't know this beautiful, kind-hearted lady, do go over and see her!

Brilliantly, Anna had a very clear plan for our day which was great, as I didn't!!!

What was brilliant was how brilliant Anna was at organising us! Mum was our very hardworking blogger photographer and I loved it!!
Our first destination was Pentle Bay which I have long salivated over in Anna's posts, where we discusses her year round sea swimming!!!  When I told Anna I was coming to the Scillies, I said I'd really like to go swimming to get the full Anna's Island experience!

This is one of Anna's photos!!! Hope you didn't mind me stealing it Anna!

Here's Anna off to swim!!!
Mum took this picture of me whilst I was getting ready to swim!
It was really funny as the water felt a little chilly but as soon as I got in (I just go in) it felt wonderfully refreshing.

Mum paddled around looking for stones and eventually Anna came back and was brilliant with Mum. She said, "Surely you came all this way to swim," and Mum said that she was just happy paddling because it was a bit chilly but Anna was not taking no for an answer and was brilliant at coaxing and then bossing her in!!! Mum was so glad as she realised how wonderful the water felt!

It was over all too soon as we had the schedule to stick to!

Hilarious trying to get back into our clothes on a beach with nowhere to hide!
We walked across the island and Anna and I talked about blogging and shopping guilt, life, blog talk, charity-shopping and Mum talked about various topics too! I wonder how she felt about all the blog chat? She seemed fairly happy!

As we continued along the beautiful paths, seeing many Agapanthuses flanking the path, suddenly, the sun came out and the landscape and sea was transformed!

Suddenly, here was the tropical island I had grown to love through Anna's photos!

Mum and I snapped away and would have happily stood there for hours but Anna was a brilliant timekeeper!!
Tresco had a really wonderful feel that day. It felt so exquisitely peaceful and you felt you had it to yourself but at no time did it feel remote.  It just felt beautiful and right.  Does that make any sense?
Here's Mum!  She adored it here! She's a real sea girl at heart.
We saw this wonderful ruin which again afforded stunning views.

We made our way towards Old Grimsby where we stopped for a refreshing drink in the Ruin cafe.

We then made our way towards the New Town where we stopped at Anna's house for something yet to come....
Mum and I sat in Anna's garden enjoying that wonderful sea air, yet more beautiful flowers and the wonderful sense of freedom and light of that magnificent island.
I had to take this picture of Anna's sunglasses as I adore Anna's sunglasses and I am always mesmerised by them when she wears them in her photos!

Anna came out with a BLOGGING ICON- the wonderful Yellow Travelling Skirt which belongs to the wonderful Melanie Kobayashi at Bag and a Beret!
This skirt has travelled round the world and been worn and embelllished by many great blogging fashionistas and it seemed absolute destiny that it had arrived that morning to Anna!!!

She had a brilliant idea that we could both wear it together!

We were in fits of absolute giggles as we tried to get into it and shuffled around the garden like Siamese twins to find the best light!

Luckily I'd dressed for warm weather but Anna had dressed for it being bit warmer so she quickly changed and we carried on to the Gallery where she was Manager.

Oh it was glorious! All the Art work is based on the Isles and there is such a wonderful variety and different art forms. I would have happily browsed for ages but we had a mere 10 minutes. I got to meet Polly, Anna's wonderful assistant and summer-time photographer.
I bought a prettty card and Mum bought a 'Bag of treasure' which was a bag of little silver charms based in the seaside that was so pretty!
This is the famous beach where Anna takes her daily blog photos and is the view from her office window which has a wonderful prospect. What an amazing place to live and work!!
We walked along to the quayside to board the last boat back that would get us back in time for the departure of the tenders to the Magellan.

Anna was a wonderful host, ebullient, easy to talk to, down to Earth but creative and wonderful and full of heart. I felt entirely at ease in her company and felt really lucky I had the opportunity to meet her! I also loved the way we could BLOG TALK and share those things that every blogger thinks and worries about and is very reassured to think that others think too!

Another of Anna's photos!
We exchanged gifts at the end. Anna bought me a wonderful Puffin brooch made from ceramics and also a beautiful kit to make your own handbag. It was so lovely!!!!

One of Anna's photos

I had a truly lovely time there and any other blog meetup would be hard-pressed to match up to this wonderful experience with such a kind and lovely host!!! Thank you so much Anna.

You can read Anna's version of our day here

As we left Tresco to go back to St Mary's, Mum and I smiled beatifically at each other and felt like this had been possibly the best day of the cruise.

On arriving back to St Mary's, we had a quick scout around the shops, I managed to purchase a few presents and we got a free bag in Seasalt each!  I wish we could have stayed longer and I know for certain in my heart, that I shall return to the Scillies.  They have captivated my heart!

Rainy day madness!

One of my favourite blog people (do I have favourites? I love you all for different qualities?) for zany brilliance is the wonderful Melanie at Bag and a Beret. Heck, she has a HAT in her blog title- that's enough!

She puts together some brilliantly kooky outfits that are so imaginative, it is brilliant!

I decided to try and put together a kooky rainy day outfit to counteract the misery of rain in the summer holidays!

So in this armoury of rainyday kook, what do we have?

Yellow raincoat: Fairly standard.
Spotty wellies- check
Cloud skirt - check

Umbrella print top.
Umbrella necklace.

Umbrella hat.

I must admit, I laughed lots when my this turned up in my Christmas presents from my Mum!
It's totally ridiculous but she thought it was too funny not to end up in my millinery collection!
I figured today was the day to break it out!

My Mum was highly amused by this and agreed to taking photos in the pouring rain for me when we  visited the park so she could see it at long last!

I suppose, though it looks daft, it would be good for an occasion where you couldn't hold an umbrella!

In the spirit of fun, my Mum did her best rain ghost impression!

Can I also point you towards Ally's haute couture black PVC novelty outfit too!
Brilliance.

Yet another sailor outfit!

Tis a bit of a cliche to go to the seaside dressed up as a sailor girl, but I did it anyway.
In case you are wondering, the top is from Joules (mega sale last year), the skirt is ancient Primark (very tight!) and the raincoat (Seasalt Cornwall) with my beloved Doc martens.
Oh how wonderful it was to inhale that sea air again!

CBC and I visited Newton by the sea with J and though it was a blustery day, it was sunny. CBC and I walked towards Dunstanburgh castle.
Such bursting joy and yet tranquillity surge through my heart simultaneously in a fusion that shouldn't work yet do.  I don't care that I get messier and messier as the breeze laps at my hair because that is its overenthusiastic welcome.   The smell, even when none-too-pleasant has its place in the joy of the situation. The stumbling over uneven patches of sand and the avoidance of large piles of Bladderwrack seaweed, these are all parts of that wild experience.  The beaches in the north are wild, they are unforgiving at times, they lack Cornish and Southern prettiness, yet they have that menace and danger in them that their west-country counterparts have too.

There is a health and a rejuvenation in being blown around and hearing the compulsive returning of the tide. I find myself all too cross and grown-up at times but being here allows me to join in with my husband in fun antics.
Joy as he dashes up a slope and affecting crossness as he kicks sand into my shoes one too many times. Annoying but necessary in peeling back that grown-up and weary facade.
I delight in my maritime companion with his ever-patient and loving nature.

Such joy to be back at sea. Whether dressed as a sailor or not!?

My bright yellow raincoat

20150529_132317

Usually, when it comes to making expensive purchases, I um and ah over this for a long time.  I'm fine making charity shop purchases that cost a couple of pounds (do too many of these) but I worry about spending a lot on one item.  Yet, when I do, they usually end up being very useful.  Like my Doc Martens last October, they cost me a lot of money but were invaluable through the winter for my 3 miles a day walk to and from school.  For a good long time, I've wanted a good raincoat. The cheap raincoats I've been using up till now have not beeen great, they are only showerproof and I get wet, they are unstructured and they make me sweat- especially as I often running 'late' in the rain and want to get there quicker. Enter Seasalt Cornwall, whose products I came across last July when I bought a Seasalt dress in Hay on Wye. I discovered they have an excellent range of raincoats which make use of cotton with a special waxing called Tin Cloth. Not only that, but they look cool too!!!

I fell in love with their Seafolly raincoat, a cotton-based raincoat with Duffle coat toggles and a fun stripy lining but scuttled away at the cost.
Months and months had gone by (about 9!) and I kept looking at them and thinking I really wanted a good quality raincoat.
Finally, we went to Totnes and I saw that there was a Seasalt shop in Totnes so I could go and try on the raincoats.  They had a special promotion that day with money off so I bit the bullet and bought it.
It got lots of use in Totnes over the week

20150529_134755
I am so pleased with my raincoat- it worked well in the rain and I can wear it when it might rain.

I bought a size 10 rather than an 8 so I can wear a jumper under it.  I can recommend it highly. It makes me smile every time I see it! It also kind of completes my rainbow of coats inadvertently!

On this day in Totnes, we were visiting Sharpham Vineyard and I wore it with my Cath Kidston Ricrac dress from my Dad/Step Mum for my birthday.

And should I get lost, you'll see me a mile off!

What do you wear in the rain? Do you do lots of walking like me and need a proper raincoat?
