10 things to be thankful for

Camping final thoughts: Things I am thankful for:

1. The indescribable joy that is music. The wonder and beauty of making music large and small - the opportunity to sing and play new repertoire, to share the performances and the rehearsals and the experience with others, especially friends. The delight and opportunity of being given 2 solos even if I only got to sing one of them croakily and with the intense need to cry.
2. Glorious cycle ride- so thankful I can enjoy this skill (and my Ulner nerve behaved)
3. Delightful weather (sunshine most of the time)
4. Wonderful food. (and comedy earrings!)
5. The company of dear friends -old and new
6. A wonderful new tent that was both spacious, kept us dry and warm.
7. The joy of dancing (and of swishy dresses)
8. Lovely walks (the ability to breathe!)
9. The miracle that was managing to pack the car at the end, despite the fact that we already had a ram-packed car and yet had bought lots of new items over the week.
10. The beauty of the rainbow that greeted us on the way home and fun cloud spotting, when we might have been feeling gloomy! (What does the white cloud look like to you??????)

What are YOU thankful for at this time?

Let them eat hats- the Do it yourself Princess Eugenie and Beatrice edition

HRH, The Duchess of Camping, Ms Kezzie Middleton

I really should finish waffling about camp, particularly as I've now been elsewhere, but I do like to remind myself of what adventures I've had.

On the final Saturday, we had a silly competition entitled, 'The alternative royal wedding anthem' in which we had to get teams together to create a performance, creating our own song/ piece for the royal wedding. It was announced 3 days or so before the event was due to happen.
CBC instantly had lots of ideas that we could use quotes from the media to form our lyrics. We got together with a great composer who agreed to write the music and we recruited team members! I was in charge of costumes and I had the silly idea that we could create a range of hideous fascinators alla Princess Eugenie and Beatrice (I was not a fan!). My only resources were a pair of snaffled scissors from the kitchen, some gaffer tape and the recyling boxes. (oh and some gold wrapping paper later found)

The brief: THE MORE HIDEOUS, THE BETTER!
Below I present you with the finished articles.

Er- CBC presents the 'Emperor's new clothes fascinator' accessorized with feather boa.

F models a wonderful gold triangular number, crafted by herself!

'Cat in the hat' and 'Egg box chic'

Backrow left to right: We have 'pre-raffelite lady with floral headband', 'floral fascinator' (knicked from Sound of Music set and attached to a headband), and 'A right royal crown.'
Front row: 'Walkers crisp box flappers'

'Curly whirly'

Finally we have myself, as the bride- wearing my veil and headband from the Sound of Music with my impromptu Prince William.

The performance was fabulous and we won!!!

The fascinators actually only went together around 10 minutes before the performance as I'd been chief orderly officer and had no time.

They will be available on Ebay for very reasonable rates :-)

Camping, cycling, swing-dancing and a little mayhem

Hey all! Thank you for all the recently lovely comments, it's always a joy receiving visitors, especially kind, complimentary, old AND new ones! You are warmly welcome- though I should warn you, I waffle ALOT!

Anyway, I began writing about my camping trip a week ago or so! I shall continue in this vein.

On the Sunday, CBC and I enjoyed a largely dreamy afternoon reading in the glorious sunshine in the arboretum. The arboretum is a glorious place, rather like the secret garden- full of beautiful trees, wonderfully soft grass, one or two benches, flowers. It is rather like a secret spot you can go to dream, paint, dream or snooze. I didn't take any photos of it sadly. At the start of the week, there were very few people there in the afternoon- later more people discovered it. I nipped off for half an hour or so to audition for a solo in the choir items (I was given 2 solos in The Merry Wedding by Grainger and some recitatives in Jonah by CarissmiOn the Monday of camp, only one of which I got to sing in the performances due to losing my voice on the Friday during the Grainger performance :( )

Then on Monday afternoon, CBC and I went for a cycle. This was my first time on a bike since London to Brighton due to my horrendously busy June/July schedule which didn't bode well! It was the hottest day that England had seen this year. It is very very hilly in Buckinghamshire where we were so I was roasting hot with the exertion. Our ride was extremely interesting and picturesque.

We rode past an RAF site...

As you can see, I was NOT impressed by the hills- let's just say I was very very grumpy with CBC for dragging me out on the cycle!
We reached Chequers- the country residence of our British Prime-minister- here I am at the entrance gate, closely scrutinized by security cameras

There was what felt like a stonking great MOUNTAIN riding onwards from Chequers into Great Hampden, but the views were absolutely stunning and I managed smiles as the afternoon heat started to quell and it became cooler.

Everyone else was absolutely amazed that we had cycled 20miles in the sweltering heat!!! I was not as I know CBC well! A shower was MOST welcome at the end!

We had more rehearsals in the evening including one where I played flute 1 for a Brahms choir and orchestra piece called Schickasleid which had some gorgeus flute moments!

The next day, after more rehearsals, I nipped into High Wycombe to visit a postoffice to post a parcel to Ohio :) , buy a new little tent and an air bed in the Blacks sale and buy or two items I wanted. Then the greatest excitement ensued as it was the night of the swing band dance, where everyone dresses up and people put together a swing band and we dance for hours to 30's, 40's, 50's classics.

I wore my favourite Vivienne of Holloway red polka dot dress which is perfect for that style of dancing, with my matching petticoat, white pumps and a flower (plus red accessories!)

We had such fun despite it being roasting hot. I danced many dances until midnight when the hall had to be returned to orchestra set-up.

CBC and I practised our Lindy-hop moves, my friend M. and I swirled around the dance floor in mad routines and CBC and I introduced some crazy 60's dance movements to the mix.
His hands look huge here in- strange perspective!

Honestly, I was enjoying myself!!!

We were really tired the next morning, but it was great fun! Unfortunately, I spent a little too long shouting over the top of the music, which resulted in hoarse voice the next day...

Has anyone else ever done that- needed to save their voice and completely forgotten this in the hype and excitement of dancing?????

Let them eat hats 19- Nautical edge!

On Wednesday last week, CBC and I decided to meet for a picnic in Weald park, a country park some miles from where I live. It was a gorgeous day! I was decked with a darling wicker basket packed to the brim with goodies. Rendezvous point was the nearest train station. We arrived and wandered the emerald slopes to find a suitable verdant, lusciously grassy, shady yet not too cold, spot upon which to spread our repast.
CBC christened his new vintage picnic hamper...

...including fun crockery. It was all fun until 2 wasps showed up! I am kidding, these were the most vermicious, determined, aggravating, petulant, persistent, spiteful and selfish vespiforms that have ever ruined a picnic! However, we enjoyed our repast of bread rolls, parma-ham, brie, cave-aged emmental, lettuce, tomatoes, quiche, raspberries, Tyrells crisps, Operetta chocolates etc.

After deciding enough was enough with the wasps, we went for a wander through the delightful greenery. There was a massive log which we had fun jumping on and along...

Wandering through the soft grass was delightful! Oh, I forgot to introduce you to my hat!

I bought this from H&M some weeks ago! It is a small hat for me! Navy blue straw, with a polka dot edge to the brim and a matching polka-dot ribbon round the crown. It begged to be teamed with navy blue and white to create a nautic theme- accessories aplenty including my ridiculous rocket-dog pumps which have all sorts of nautical charms all over them (which I bought purely because they are emblazoned with a lobster- I have a curious affection for lobsters)

I don't really have many close-up shots of them, so I presend you with a silly shot where I tried on some discarded glasses we found on our travels- they are missing their right arm. Notice, my corsage migrated to the hat!

CBC also wore a hat- a charming Panama hat he bought to wear to the Chap Olympiad last year!

Weald park has some delightful flora and fauna to see- I love this place.

Some bambi-style deer...

Wild blackberries were around- CBC tried one which was rather tart!

The thistles were reaching the seed dispersal stage of their life-cycle- downy parachutes were floating all over the place! I love how fluffy they are! My camera case is currently lined with a load of seeds which I stashed!!! I may not still be in year 5 but I am still thinking of my seed collection!!!

Finally, I spied some gorgeous bunnies scampering around as we departed the park...

Has anyone else enjoyed any lovely picnics recently or experienced the wasp-equivalents of London rioters?

Presents, presents!!!!

There's are many cool things about being a teacher(and lots of the opposite but let's not go there!)- but one really cool thing is the end of the year when some of your dearest delights who don't hate you make you lovely cards, send you lovely cards and delight and surprise you with really thoughtful gifts! I am always still surprised and overwhelmed when my cherubs turn up with gifts for me! I never expect anything and it is always lovely that they (or their parents!) appreciate you! I decided that this year, I would photograph the pressies to remind me when school feels horrid and like the children really couldn't care less about you, that they do really!

Actually, these flowers were a gift from my headteacher on behalf of the kids to say thank you for my hard work organising the school concert! These flowers were gorgeous roses from a darling Polish girl in my choir who is sadly moving up north am soo sad she wont be singing in my choir anymore.
These were from a really quiet girl in my class who I often thought didn't like me! Beautiful colours! And, I managed to get them into a vase fairly quickly so they didn't die swiftly like all my flowers usually do!
Here is the majority of my stash that weren't instantly perishable!

Oh my goodness, 9 boxes of chocolates- this will last me till Christmas!

My colleague bought me this amazing handmade biscuit, presented exquisitely! YUM!!!

2 bottles of wine. Surprisingly, this is the first time I've ever been bought wine by pupils! Strangely, they somehow seem to know I don't like alcohol! A sweet thought!

A selection of pretty jewellery. The bird/heart necklace and the New look earrings were from my fellow year 5 colleague! My favourite present out of all!

Lovely smellies and pretty cupcake coasters! Love!

A selection of cards, some bought, some homemade- and one 'Best Teacher' certificate!

I love this one best- it depicts me! playing the recorder.

This message makes me almost cry! I will think of this every time I feel I am a rubbish teacher. This girl is a gifted and talented pupil who spent so much time helping me this year with admin, cutting things up etc. I love this more than all the rest!

It's very lovely to be appreciated!
