The two extremes

Frantic scurrying around for most of a day, a night and a morning:
Rooms cleaned, clothes folded, bank statements sorted, floors hoovered, baths scrubbed, dressing tables polished, sheets changed, hair washed, rotten pears collected. clothes delivered to the charity shop, books donated to library,
Frenzy, movement, constant thinking, the ticking of a clock, time stampeding like entropy and finally....

Relax.

CBC returned.

Driving to pub,
Food being eaten; fields being admired.
Gardens returned to.
Jet lag finally given into and two Am bedtimes acknowledged.
Throws spread, cushions dropped and sleep upon the lawn.

The two extremes.

He is home and I am glad.

What to wear on his day home?
Something red and quirky. The first time CBC and I danced together, I wore a red dress. Not this one.
Tea cups by Orla Kiely at People Tree and my teapot brooch from Gloriously Glittery brooch at Etsy

We fell asleep on the grass in the cool air

Hope you are well!

Guernsey Sea glass

Hello there!
Hope you had a beautiful bank holiday weekend. I spent most of mine at music camp and had a perfectly wonderful time- ceilidh-dancing; feasting; playing a premiere; and helping cook porridge for 200!!!
CBC is back tomorrow which I am so, so  happy about although I have spent most of the day working hard tidying and cleaning. I've tidied his desk so he's ready for work!

Anyway, I thought I'd share my second sea glass experience of the holiday.
When we were in Guernsey, Mum and I ended up having a little sit down on the beach and I spied some glass and some nice shells so I spent a while hunting them down and thought it would be nice to make another arrangement of them- this time organised by colour and take some pictures.
I especially liked the Butter shells. Those are the yellow ones. Only one piece of blue glass today but some really nice tiny piece of sea glass.

I hope you enjoyed them.

Now, I'm off to resume tidying...

Simplicity

Much as I am a serial hoarder and delight in many things, it is the simple things that delight me truly.  It might be something small, but it brightens my day and casts a golden hue on proceedings in a wholly wonderful way.

The flute recital went very well and it was so delightful to be there. To be playing in that beautiful venue. To be friends with and play with such great musicians. To revel in the beautiful echo and resonance of such a well acoustically-constructed venue. I have a good flute tone but to hear it enhanced by that space, that is wonderful.
The sheer unexpected joy of discovering that my church music friend (who are incidentally, my landlords), had come to watch the recital, despite the fact that I only emailed them last night.
The fun of choosing a kettle with my flute pal A- giggling over ruby-slippers kettles.
Sheer euphoria at remembering that Pak Choi existed as my eyes fell on it in the supermarket visit with her and pouncing on it eagerly, like a cat cornering a mouse.  Childish glee as I used my spiralizer which is essentially feels like sharpening a large pencil on a courgette.  The final delight as I cooked a green stir-fry which tasted outstanding.  Smug appreciation of courgette flowers staying clear of slugs.  Awe at the array of flame-hued roses that continue to deign to exist in my garden and the unexpected appearance of scarlet miniature roses.  Bliss at reclining the garden reading a murder mystery book whilst sipping mint tea from my own plants, freshly brewed with a lurid accompaniment of paprika Pringles whilst barefeet wriggled in the grass; the incredulity of seeing the accelerated growth of one cucumber overnight and the glee of harvesting ruby-red tomatoes; meeting my friend's husband and discovering what a lovely man he is and hoping that he and CBC will meet and like each other.  Being able to listen and hear a confidence over someone's difficulties and knowing I was able to listen and someone trusted me to share.  The amazement of an afternoon tea being produced from someone's freezer in minutes and sharing it in her garden; the soaring sensation in my heart when I see someone's sea glass finds on a beach on instagram.  The sun late into the evening.

All these things I treasure. It is the simple things that can make you smile, sigh and think that life can be beautiful and it doesn't have to be something over the top. I thank God for all of these.

Appreciate life, all the small moments; they add up to an ocean of joy!

5 brooches and friends #37 Fruit salad

Hi there!

It's been a little while since my last 5 brooches post.  I have been at my Dad's for 4 lovely days and wasn't the weather glorious! It was perfect being in gorgeous Kent for those days with them!

Today's 5 brooches is super simple and quick- all in one.  I had packed inefficiently for Kent with dresses that were too hot and I'd only packed one outfit for each day rather than my usual sling a million garments in the suitcase approach. I ended up wearing sleeves today with leggings which was a disaster as the wheel had fallen off my suitcase on the way to Kent. I didn't realise and I had dragged it all the way to the station and through Westfield in Stratford to reach Stratford international so the bottom was all shredded and cracked. Thus, on my way home, I had to manhandle my heavy suitcase in my arms through a crowded shopping centre until I reached the heaving Primark to buy holdall to put it in! That was much better but the damage was done- I was a sweating wreck. By the time I'd changed trains twice and walked the almost-mile home, I needed a shower and a change of outifit. This charity-shopped top was perfectly cool and it lends itself well to pin badges so I added a whole fruit salad along the side- Avocado, Blueberry, peach and watermelon and my lemon-slice necklace to top it off!

Voila!
I have a concert tomorrow lunchtime. The flute trio I sometimes augment and make it a quartet are giving a concert in St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Brentwood if anyone is around, free and in the area!  Red shoes are mandatory for this group so I need to hunt down my Ruby slippers!

See you soon!xx

August garden latest

Hello!

To be honest, I was dreading what the garden would look like when I came home from holiday. I'd essentially been away for 2weeks and apparently, it didn't rain here!

The lavender, although a little-dry looking, had flowered; the Olive tree is looking happy and amazingly, the little fig tree has been thriving.
Some of the roses have bloomed again.

When I took this, this was the only Love and Peace tea-rose that had bloomed but there are 3 exquisite examples as I type (in the dark!)

My first task, apart from watering, was to mow the lawn. All of it, including the bit at the end that I am usually too lazy to do.

I moved all the patio plants to by the compost bins as I was worried they'd be frazzled in the sun. It worked-they are thriving.
The strawberry now has two runner babies.
The Aldeburgh mint is flourishing.
My raspberry plant has started producing early. I've had 3 already.
Mum brought over a titchy (I mean titchy) peppermint plant in July which has now grown into this.
My Rosemary plant was also tiny and has grown.

 More roses have bloomed.
These three late tomato plants are a bit frazzled but are flowering.
Here's the vegetable bed. It seemed to like the hot weather.

I'm mystified as to why the slugs have left my cucumber plants alone but I am not complaining!
They've flowered and there are tiny embryo cucumbers.

Some of the leeks look rather perky although quite a few of them are a bit floppy and small.
I've had little luck with the courgettes so far but I was delighted to see a flower. It was lovely until I accidentally knocked it off when watering them. Cross? Yep!

The one at the front is taking over the bed a bit.

What about the beans and tomatoes? Looking better than they were
There's a fair few tomatoes and I have already eaten 14
The beans are finally flowering. Will I actually get some beans!??

Here's the messy bit which I weeded extensively. I got stuck and spiked in the process but it was worth it.

The biggest surprise is the apple tree. My landlord told me that the tree was no good but actually it is covered in apples. They're really sweet with the red skin.  I stewed up about 12 of them with blackberries.  As I mentioned, my sister helped me pick them and she took a few home.

The arch finally looks a bit neater.
Also, I discovered there is a greengage tree in the garden too, sitting there nonchalantly in the corner.
My favourite tree for outfit shots is covered in pears but they seem to be diseased as they all have nasty brown-blotches all over them.
My neighbour has a delicious-looking plum tree with a branch poking into my garden so I scrumped these!

How's your garden been this month?
