TARDIS Tuesday - Clara's outfit that never was- from the Snowman

Hello there,

Greetings on this sunny Tuesday. I am really ready for half-term.  I am finding my young charges increasingly irritating and a break from them would be good.  I have a recorder festival with around 45 of them tomorrow evening so a long day tomorrow- plus it is a long way from home so I won't get back till late.

Today's TARDIS Tuesday is one of those obscure Clara Oswald outfits that I delight in finding.

This outfit was an alternative outfit that was filmed but that never made it into the actual episode. It featured in The Snowmen when we see the modern day Clara walking in a graveyard.

I thought this outfit was really pretty.  The print reminds me of Mandalas and I like the colour combination.  The playsuit is originally from Urban Outfitters, a lot like many of Clara's clothing items in her first series.  That is one of those shops I've never actually seen in real life.

And here's me.

As you can see, I found the exact same playsuit. I bought it second-hand, very reasonably, I think for about £8.  I found this an excellent outfit for gardening and house work on a warm day.  The shorts made this a good outfit for sitting on the grass in without worrying about flashing undies!   That said, if I were as short as Jenna Coleman, it would be better as this is quite short of long-legged me!
I wore my Aztec eagle bird necklace with it and added a black top and red satchel, both of which were charity-shopped.

I have mixed feelings about playsuits.  They are a great idea for being able to frolic around in the sun without worrying too much about a skirt BUT *whispers*... what about using public loos???

What do you think of this outfit?

Style Imitating Art- Monkey trading cards

Greetings!
monkey card
Monkey trading from the Quadrupeds series (N41) for Allen and Ginter Cigarettes
Here is another round of Style Imitating Art!  The curator this week is new host, Daenel from over at Living outside the Stacks.  She chose this interesting piece of art in the form of a Cigarette trading card.  Lots of details in here to make use of for the inspiration:
Monkeys, parrots, foliage, trees, coconuts, pink vintage fonts, a yellowy background, grown, green, the texture of the palm tree- it certainly offered lots of scope.
But I was puzzling over what to wear all week.
It was only as I was putting away washing last night, that I spied this old pair of Primark Summer trousers, that I realised, I had a basis for this outfit. I last wore these for Style Imitating art about 5 years ago for Woman walking in an Exotic forest .  They had the right sort of coloured foliage in the background even if the slightly more lurid flowers were not so fitting.
I added a brown vest top and cardie (ahrgh, not very well matching in this light!) as a nod to the coconuts and monkey fur.

My accessories were all a nod to the parrots in the background:  I have my oldest brooch, the top jewelled parrot, owned since I was about 11, the earrings (also that long I think!) and the two tin brooches of Budgie and Kookaburra bought in Corbridge.

What do you think? Can you see the inspiration?  What would you have chosen from your wardrobe?

If you fancy joining in, AND PLEASE do, send your picture by tonmorrow, to Daenel livingoutsidethestacks@gmail.com.  Bev gets a very special gold shiny star for joining in NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE after my plea for people to join in. Please go and comment on her post so she keeps joining in and because her outfit is brilliant!

Unexpected growth

There's something I find particularly wonderful about the first year of living in a new home and that is discovering the garden.  Of course, if you move to or buy a house which has no garden or that has been paved over, has only lawn or worse, fake grass, this won't happen.  However, if you are fortunate enough to inherit the garden of gardeners, that first year is voyage of discovery.
I remember the joy of my first year in the bungalow that we rented before buying our own house- in its 100+ feet of garden, there were so many shrubs and plants, that there was always a new joyful discovery of a new plant that would interesting shaped leaves and then flower subsequently.

We knew, when buying this house, that the lady who lived here (with her family) loved gardening- she had grown a passion fruit vine (which CBC accidentally massacred...grrr).  The garden was one of the key things that made us fall in love with this house- it was so beautiful the first time we saw it, last July.

Now we've been here a few months, in addition to putting our own plants and touches into the garden (including CBC removing a tree and me, a couple of shrubs), we've started to see plants growing at different stages and we spot something new!
In the raised bed which we can see from our Living Room, there is an abundance of Lavender growing. These spears have suddenly shot up in the past few weeks- they are dense and beautiful and will look glorious when they blossom.
These spiky, funky looking beauties have the darling name, Love in a Mist, Fennel flowers or Nigella Damascena. There's only one so far. I have no idea where these have suddenly appeared from!

Likewise, these tiny pinky, purple flowers have suddenly blossomed abundantly but I am unsure what they are called.
These strident leaves have such a pleasing shape.
I have an amusing story about the next plant.  When my Mum came over in February, she saw the rose bush in our garden that was growing in all directions.  She completely decimated it, cutting it to about 15cm tall.  CBC was really worried about it saying that she'd cut it too much (he, the Passion fruit murderer). I reassured him that roses like rough treatment.

Fast forward to the first May bank holiday and it was already this tall.

May Bank holiday
Now, it has shot up a further foot or so.  I can't wait to see it bloom!

The ultimate stunner in the garden is this plant which, before flowering,  seemed to be some sort of flowering currant but now, it looks like a Little Lime Hydrangea. Do you know what it is?
Mum and I tied up this flowering tree which had lots of branches. Mum tried to dig it up to move it back a bit but it was too tough to move so we tied it up a bit as it was flopping forward onto the lawn.  My neighbours have a beautiful huge blue beauty version if it! I hope we haven't damaged it, trying to move it!
This is, I suspect, the next beauty to bloom! What will it be?
These little pink flowers are not very prolific, but very welcome.
There was only one golden flower, a month ago.
These giant chive flowers are very pretty but there are a lot less than there would have been because I cut most of their heads off because my friend told me it puts the goodness back into the soil/plant if you do that. I couldn't resist leaving a few though!

CBC and I bought a new, larger pot for my Mint plant and it has repaid the attention by growing rampantly for the last 2 weeks!
Rehomed Mint
Today, I planted out my germinated Climbing bean plants and tomatoes and Cavalo Nero which were germinated by my Mum. I've surrounded them in egg shells and Slug pellets so here's hoping they survive!

I look forward to what else will happen in our lovely garden in year 1!

Anything lovely and surprising growing in your garden? Did you discover this delight of the first year when you moved?

A Royal Wedding Outfit

Greetings!

Oh, what a sunny day it has been!
At school today, we had a special dress up day today in honour of the Royal Wedding.  It was 'Dress as a Wedding guest for the Royal Wedding'.  In case you are stuck under a rock, this is because Prince Harry and Megan Markle are getting married tomorrow on the 19th May.

It was a joy to come to school and see all the children dressed up in their prettiest dresses and smartest suits and similarly, the staff.  Generally, our staff dress quite casually so it was great to see them in beautiful dresses, fascinators etc.

I looked through my extensive portfolio of dresses and was planning to wear a turquoise silk jacquard long dress from Monsoon that I bought in a charity-shop last year.

However, this morning, I changed my mind and chose something else.

The dress I chose, I AM SURE was worn by Emma Stone for one scene in Lala Land.  I remember going to see it at the cinema and saying, "That's MY dress!" as she sashayed out the house into a waiting car with Ryan Gosling.

Here is the only picture (the one on the right) I can find of it online. What do you think? Is it the same one as mine?

Image borrowed from Pink Villa
Don't you think it looks like mine?

I bought this dress (Laura Ashley) from a charity shop a few years ago and have worn it for a few garden parties.
I paired it with this pink chiffon hat which was also bought from a charity-shop a very long time ago- when my Mum got married, I went to find a hat to wear and came back with 4 hats- 2 from charity shops and 2 from a hat shop!
For accessories, I chose a pearl collar necklace from Dorothy Perkins that I always seem to wear with this dress, a pearl and fabric rose bracelet from Primark and some Pearl earrings.
I wore some gold Tescos flip-flop style sandals because I wore some shoes that rubbed several layers of skin off the side of my foot and it has spent the whole week generally being gross and being irritated by whatever shoes I wore so these finally gave it a chance to just air it!
At lunchtime today, we had a lovely time as we planned a Royal tea party and all brought different elements for the lunch/tea.  We had a staff photo in our finery and mingled, eating delicious things.
In the last half an hour of school, we got all the children out into the Playground for an assembly where we awarded prizes to Best Dressed, sang the National Anthem and my Drumming Club entertained the masses as a marching band. It was a joyful day!

Occasionally, it is really nice to do something different like that!

What would you have worn for a royal wedding outfit?

TARDIS Tuesday- The Curse of the Black Spot- Amy Pond outfit

Hello there!
Hope you are well!
It's Monday night and I am, once again, up hideously late! Am also rather last minute with my TARDIS Tuesday choice!

Today's inspiration is the Doctor Who character Amy Pond from back in Matt Smith's tenure as the Doctor.  This was a swashbuckling adventure set on a pirate ship with an alien twist!  Amy Pond was wearing her ubiquitous checked shirt and a very short denim skirt. In addition, she was wearing a peachy cardigan (not pictured), hot pink tights and boots and later dons a pirate's frock coat and tricorn.
As usual, when I do a last minute TARDIS Tuesday, a crucial article could not be found, namely my short, fitted black skirt that always doubles for any short, dark fitted skirt worn by a Doctor Who character. Instead, I had to substitute it for this not-fitted denim skirt.
Amy's shirt is originally from Uniqlo, as is mine, but mine just looks similar, it isn't identical. Hot pink tights and long boots have long been part of my wardrobe venacular
Luckily, I still kept CBC's Tricorn from when we went to the Pirate party on the Golden Hinde in London so it was easy to fetch from my hat shelf (oh yes, joy and rapture- my wardrobe has a hat shelf!)
Finally, I decided to add this black embellished jacket I own to give it the full look. Wishing my badly made Silver foil rapier wasn't at school and was here for photos! Alas, not!

Rating on how comfy this outfit is: 7/10.  The shirt and skirt plus boots combo is very comfortable but I am never 100% happy in tights. Still, this is an outfit, I will definitely try again!
This rather wonderful episode features Hugh Bonneville and has an interesting story line, if a little unbelievable!

What do you think?

Buffy the Dog Slayer

Last Bank Holiday Monday, I headed over to my Sister's house for the day.  Mainly to see her, but also mainly to meet her gorgeous new kitten.
This is Buffy who is the cutest little Tabby kitten.  She is incredibly good-natured and a very clean kitten.
In addition, she is, like the ubiquitous kitten, incredibly easy to play with and distract.
Also, she is incredibly photogenic.

My sister laughed and said this is my equivalent of being broody, the way I cooed over her and was utterly enchanted and transfixed by her darling ways.
She was very fond of playing with CBC and his shoe laces.

After a while, she grew very tired, since she hadn't had any nap.
My Mum, who is the cat equivalent of the Horse-whisperer, got her on her lap and managed to lull her to sleep.

She was totally zonked out and didn't seem to mind her limbs being put into this hilarious position!
Eventually, we were due to leave for our cycle ride as a family and my sister carefully lifted up her miniscule body to place her back in her basket- she reminded us of a cartoon cat character who has been steamrollered and remains flat!
A paw stretched out involuntarily- this was no deliberate action.
My heart is utterly enchanted by this sweetheart.
She slept as we left and awoke as we returned a few hours later, looking still utterly irresistible.

Be sure that I will find a way to see her again soon!

A motley collection of random things I wanted to write about. #2

Again, here are a few random moments that I wanted to write about over the past week or so.

AHRGH, CBC is watching Jaws 3!!! He keeps laughing and saying how fake it looks. I have not actually ever seen it before   When I was a little girl, we used to go over to my Dad's house at the weekends.  We would always watch a video, recorded from the TV- the choices were:  The Railway Children, James Bond (various), Around the World in 80 days and he had all 3 Jaws movies.  BUT, he always stipulated that we were only allowed to watch the movies at certain ages, Jaws 1 at a certain age, Jaws 2, then Jaws 3.  I was terrified by them!!  Jaws 3, for me, was the ultimate in scary- if I was only allowed to watch it at a certain age then it must be utterly awful.  I built it up in my head so it achieved an almost mythical scariness.   Somehow, after my Dad remarried, we didn't really watch videos like that so much so I never did see Jaws 3, except for one clip of the people walking through the glass tunnel with Jaws approaching which was the remnant of Jaws 3 which had been taped over for something else.  Seeing a glass tunnel appear on the screen some 10 minutes ago took me back to that anticipatory terror I associated with it in my callow years!

-We visited a really pleasant garden centre today (May bank holiday weekend Sunday) and it was really a lovely place- realised we had actually reached middle age with going to a garden centre on a Bank Holiday weekend- ha!  We bought 2 large Grecian-looking pots to repot the Olive and Fig trees into and a glazed blue one for the mint to live in (plus matching dishes for all three), a large bag of compost for aforementioned pots, climbing bean seeds, a Lemon Balm plant and a present for someone who MIGHT just be reading this post!

- Had a delightful leisurely sojourn along the High Street of the town we originally wanted to move to after going to church there this morning.  There is a very classy (but more expensive) charity shop there which I had the pleasure of browsing very slowly because there was no one else to hurry me up (and no one else in there!) - suddenly, we heard a naval marching band parading down the High Street!
- Oh the church service was LOVELY! It was JUST my type of service with all my favourite songs. Still not sure what to do on the church front.

- Still absolutely sick of engineering works on my line.  EVERY weekend there is no train service but a bus which takes more than double the time the train does and every evening as well after 9:30 meaning that coming home from orchestra takes an AGE! Last week, I missed the last train by 5 minutes, so instead of arriving to my home station at 10:30 which I should have done in normal (well, normal as of 3 months ago) circumstances, I got home at MIDNIGHT! The weekend works have been on since January (and were on before December). When are they going to end?? It makes life, as a non-driver, utterly infuriating!

-Thrift Deluxe wrote about making homemade crisps! I would like to try that!!!

- CBC made me put my Brompton bike up and down about 10 times to learn how to assemble it. Why do I find such things so difficult- I don't seem to have any logic about these things and just do them in a clunky way. I am going to cycle to work tomorrow (well, to the station) for the first time!
- Have survived two days of cycling- oh it is sooooooooo much quicker than walking!!!

- Very much enjoying this wearing dresses with no tights, leggings or cardigans! More please!

- Went a little mad in the Holland and Barrett Penny Sale on Shower gel.  Is 8 bottles too many?

TARDIS Tuesday- Journey to the centre of the TARDIS- the post shower outfit!

Greetings!

I do hope that things are well with you!
I am writing after a delightful Bank Holiday weekend- it was really enjoyable with a good balance of activities and rest.

Today, I have a more obscure outfit from Doctor Who. You often see the more famous and iconic outfits being cosplayed but I thought I'd have a go at one of those that only features briefly- mainly because it involved not too much effort!!

In my favourite Clara costume outfit's episode, Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, Clara wears a beautiful sequin-print dress which I wore on Christmas day.  However, at the end of episode, after everything is solved, Clara has a shower and comes out to greet the Doctor with her towel and wet hair!

The items she wore haven't been identified certainly although Mariah thinks the flowery garment comes from Basic Editions, a vintage playsuit from the 1990's.

Sooo, when washed my hair the other day, I decided to take advantage of the moment...

My dress was a 'vintage' 1990's dress from a charity shop and I thought the print was rather similar.  I wore an old t-shirt and my Clara eagle necklace from another outfit.  My black lego earrings were the nearest I could get to her black spear-shaped earrings. Plus, I had the perfect towel!
I felt incredibly nostalgic wearing this outfit as when I was a teenager in the 90's, I had an outfit JUST like this- a floral slip dress which I wore with a white ribbed, round-neck t-shirt! I'd wear it with black Palladium shoes or Doc Martens! It was my favourite outfit!

If you want to watch a Whistle Stop tour of the episode, here is a video- you will see this outfit at 16 seconds in!

What do you think?

Style Imitating Art- Floral dish

Good evening or even morning!
I hope you are well.

Tonight, I have an outfit for you inspired by this artwork- a dish  from Japan called Nabeshima ware from the 17th century.

I instantly knew what outfit I would wear for this but it took a lot of searching to find the garment in question!
 Japanese dish - Nabeshima ware

Here is my outfit! As you can see, the colours are perfect- the pale blue background is the same in the dress and the leaves and lowers are navy and pink. My shed picks out the turquoisey shade! Happily, I didn't iron it!
I did also wear tiny pink daisy earrings with a pearl centre but failed to take photos! And a pink flower clip in my hair.
CBC and I have spent time in the garden today and yesterday- he tied up this plant against the shed as it had fallen down. What will it be?  Honeysuckle or something similar? I don't know?!
In case you would like to join in (which would make me VERY happy to know I had recruited someone!!) Send a picture of an outfit somehow inspired by the Japanese plate to Salazar at www.14shadesofgrey.wordpress.com 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com and she will post a roundup of everyone's outfits who were inspired by this piece. It is always a delight to see different interpretations and it would be lovely to see more people join! Please, someone join in!

Hope you are well!
