My 40th Birthday

 Hello Blog friends,

I never really do much for my birthday but this year, it happens to be my 40th birthday at the end of the month. The one year I might perhaps want to do something for my birthday and I can't.   I also feel incredibly gloomy about being 40.  Because I still think I'm 12 in my head.  And 40 seems to grown up.  People have expectations of things you should have done by that age, even if they don't voice them.  I don't want to be in my 40's so that's a bit sad.  So I had a little thought:

I love fancy dress parties and I love Doctor Who.  Now this might seem a bit self-centered, so please forgive me if this seems that way, I just thought it might be a bit of fun esp since I won't be able to have a celebration, but I'd love it if my blog friends wanted to join in with the TARDIS Tuesday the week of my 40th birthday.  If you felt able or willing to get involved in this, here's my idea:

You plan a costume based on things you have in your home, not buying anything for it, that might subtly (or not so subtly) be based on a Doctor Who character.  Then you post a photo of you on your blog on Sunday the 28th of February or Monday 1st March in your costume/outfit.  Then you add the link for your blog post to the comments of this post.  I should point out that the Doctor's TARDIS is a Type 40 TARDIS so my Tuesday post will be called the TYPE 40 TARDIS Tuesday.  I will then share the pictures of you in your TARDIS Tuesday outfit along with mine and I have an online fancy dress party with you guys!

If you need any inspiration, just have a look at my TARDIS Tuesday tag or google Doctor Who characters and look at google images

TARDIS Tuesday- Being the TARDIS

Hi there!
Thank you to everyone so far that responded and said they'd like to take part in the Bloggers Art Gallery. I will write some more soon about this! Really pleased you thought it was a good idea. Thank you also for your kind empathy over the party thing. You all took such pains to share your experiences and empathise. I appreciate it so much.

Today, for TARDIS Tuesday, I am wearing an outfit from a few weeks ago. It's a TARDIS Tuesday with a difference. In the early days of TARDIS Tuesday, I used to wear a lot of TARDIS blue for it.  I thought it would be nice to make a return to that.
Today's outfit features one of my favourite presents ever that my Mum has bought me. A few years ago, my Mum went to Florida with my sister and my Mum bought me back this dress as a present.
I thought it was so pretty and it is both comfy AND attractive!
Wore it a few weeks ago with charity shopped cardie and Birkenstock sandals plus an Esoteric London earrings and necklace.

What do you think?

The newest addition to TARDIS corner

I am privileged enough to have received 3 TARDIS art prints as presents from blogging friends.

Gemma James bought me the one on the left and Janet bought me the other two. I love them.

Then, look what came in the post this week...

The lovely Alison who blogs at two Fatdormouse locations- here on Wordpress and here on Blogger is the most amazing Zentangle artist (I've included her Zentangle tag so you can look)- she made me a musical one once before.  I suggested that a TARDIS Zentangle might be interesting and she created this beautiful one. Even the calligraphed envelope was an utter work of art.  I am really thrilled with it so thank you very much Alison! Using the Time vortex for the Zentangle was really clever!

Recent doings

Totally stolen this idea from Fatdormouse, who stole it from someone else, who stole it from someone else. It's a paradox, anyways...

So, here I go.

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW...is dark. I am sitting at the dining room table facing a darkened garden. It is pouring with rain which is very audible in a bungalow! It is dark, I might add. I expect a fox has slunk past the window, they usually do and I usually catch them but I've been sitting in a different position from normal.

HEARING.. the whirring of the computer.  I haven't listened to any music today. I don't always.  I was going to sit and listen to Doctor Who series 7...

hold on...

haven't switched it on....

Now I am!

The Rings of Akhaten, which is appropriate as it is all about singing.

PONDERING... Have I forgotten to prepare anything for tomorrow's year 3 recorder concert.Have I got enough music stands for 90 children. Will child x, y, z, a and b behave or will they try to wreck it for everyone else?

PRAYING... not right now, but, amongst many other things, I am praying for 5 people specifically. The guest vicar at the team service last week, gave us all a piece of string to tie 5 knots in to remind us to pray for those people. It's tied to the buckle of my handbag and has worked well so far at reminding me.

THANKFUL... for a calm weekend alone in which I managed to get the housework done; lots of gardening done; for the weather holding out until I had done everything I needed, for CBC coming home safely from DofE, for the chocolate profiteroles (I cannot spell it but I cannot be bothered to check) that I got reduced in Sainsbury's; for my sore throat subsiding today; for a beautiful church service this morning; for the lift I received from church friend.

WEARING... Amazing Grace t-shirt, daisy brooch, Henry Holland floral skirt, navy blue leggings with a hole in the knee, odd socks, knitted slippers from Mummy; Primark Sailor cardigan, music camp sweatshirt (recent addition), Peony flower slide in hair.

GOING...to bed as soon as I have done this! 11.02!  I have been on the go all day since leaving for church at 8.10am!

READING:  Cakes and Ale by Somerset Maughan. It's ok so far but not adoring it.

LOOKING FORWARD TO...when this week is over.SOooooooooooooooooooo many concerts and trips! And going to Germany!!!! Schwarzwalderkirchetorte here I come!* (well, just the Schwarzwalder but I always like writing that word!)

HOPING... that I haven't offended a DoctorWho cosplayer by thinking he was cosplaying John Lumic because I didn't see the fez and bowtie on his head in the small picture in a group shot because of the person behind him. I was informed, by another cosplayer, that someone in a wheelchair doesn't just have to cosplay someone in a wheelchair. I didn't even think it was a wheelchair but I guess the point is, I didn't think or look close enough,  he must get that all the time, people not seeing past the wheelchair. Thus, I am really feeling sad that I might have offended him or continued the stereotype in some way.  Anyway, trying not to fret about it but hate upsetting anyone, I worry about it for days.

IN THE KITCHEN...is the ceramic oven dish which I cooked oven-roasted veg with with Bulgar wheat and red quinoa. Was delicious!!!

IN THE LEARNING ROOMS... er, not sure what this means. Well, I'm going to be TEACHING Year 1, year 3 and year 4 tomorrow as well as KS1 Singing assembly, Orchestra, Year 3 recorder concert with all the parents! Sigh...Really hoping I have enough music stands and music for all90 of them! Luckily I picked up a rainbow music stand in the charity shop yesterday for £3!!!

AROUND THE HOUSE... I tidied and cleaned!  There's 3 racks of clean clothes, some that got left in the rain, CBC used the electric drill to put up his amazing print of the Himalaya with a huge shrub in front this week that he bought from an artist in Prudhoe. He refused to put up my 3 TARDISES though-swine! So they are in TARDIS corner on top of the sideboard.

Right, really must be getting to bed!

The day I became a Bookseller and other London adventures.

Having left the King's Cross Pond Club, I figured that this would be rather an expensive swimming pool visit unless I made other use of my train ticket to go somewhere else in London or visit other places or at least spend some more time exploring.

As I left the pool, I was still very cold so I went into the delightful Skip gardens (more on that another time) to have a hot chocolate.

As I wandered back through the roads towards King's Cross, I noticed a special bookshop on the Camden Canal called 'Word on Water', a barge that was a book shop.
Unable to resist a novelty bookshop, I headed down the fake grass steps to it.

It was  pleasant to be by the water, particularly as the sun had come out again.

I headed inside to look at books- the book shop, on a barge, was cleverly laid out.  I could imagine reading a book here quite happily.Books were second hand and reasonably priced- £3 per paperback or 2 for £5 with hardbacks a bit more and varied in price.

I went to pay for my two books and as I turned to go, the bookseller said to me, "Would you like to earn a free book?"

Intrigued, I said, "Ok," and he asked, in a very croaky voice, if I would mind the shop for 5 minutes as he desperately needed a bottle of water, but didn't usually work at this shop, so he wasn't exactly sure where to go.
I agreed, inwardly thinking, "Oh my goodness, seriously is this happening?"
It was and I sat on his chair. A very steady stream of people looked at the books and a few asked me about prices.  Unfortunately, I didn't know the price of the hardbacks as it said, "Varied between £5 and £10 on the sign.    They were all willing to wait and I chatted to one of the ladies about her book choice, "Why didn't they ask Evans?" by Agatha Christie. She hadn't read it before.

He came back, a little more than 5 minutes as it is quite a way to King's Cross station, most apologetically.  He told me to choose a book but I said that it was just nice to do a favour.  After trying to persuade me without success, he asked my name, shook my hand and thanked me.  I was quite pleased to run a book shop even just for a little while!

I am impressed with how King's Cross is changing. It used to be very seedy but it's slowly changing. I loved this grove with tables and chairs created by the Granary, an eating establishment.

Next, I jumped onto the tube and headed off to Holborn for one of my favourite museums, the Sir John Soane museum.  I really recommend this- it is free to enter and is very interesting.  Whenever I picture Grimmauld Place, the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix in Harry Potter, it has always looked like the Sir John Soane Museum in my head, particularly as the three houses are all part of the museum, there was no front door to one before!

Unfortunately, photos are not allowed inside, but this house is an architectural gem- Soane was an architect  (he built the Bank of England I believe) who had a great interest in the interplay of light inside houses, so there are all sorts of passage ways with coloured glass in unexpected places. The rooms themselves are interesting but he had an amazing collection of artefacts and paintings.  In the painting room, probably valued at 1/2 a billion pounds, there are some Holbein paintings that are well regarded.  There is an Egyptian Sarcophagus and a whole host of pieces of stone work from Greece and other places.

As I left, bizarrely, I met a friend of CBC's who was walking her baby from Covent Garden to Angel. So weird to meet someone you know in London!
My next stop was Piccadilly Circus where I headed to the Cath Kidston store to try and spend a £10 credit voucher I had but I didn't find anything I wanted to spend it on.  I headed back towards Piccadilly circus and as I turned onto Regent Street, I saw this TARDIS -like Structure.
That woould be a Doctor Who selfie with Pond hair! Sadly not Amy Pond though!

Onto Carnaby street where I saw this attention-grabbing structure.  It's called Ted's Helix of Haberdashery and is entirely covered in Ted Baker buttons

I love the crazy names of shops on Carnaby Street, The Great Frog indeed!
I had a glance into Office, where I was sorely tempted by the Miss L Fire Lobster sandals at half price-I tried on a 7, as they had no 8's, which fitted but I decided, much as I love them, I'd already bought a new pair of Rieker sandals so I didn't need them.
Onwards, I headed into Irregular Choice where I had a browse of pretty shoes, they had an enormous Unicorn rocking horse downstairs which I forgot to photograph but I took a picture of this unicorn for Gem, Pink-Haired Princess.

Unfortunately, willpower having been exercised muchly, I ended up buying a pair of Poetic License shoes in the sale which I am feeling guilty about.  More on those another time.

So, after that, I headed off to Topshop for a glance in the basement at the different boutiques as I always liked coming up to this Topshop as a teenager (wish I still had my vintaage gingham Levi's shirt)  and finally after that, headed home.

It was an interesting day in London: swimming, bookshop tending, museum attending, TARDIS hunting, shoe perusing

If I were in charge of Clara's wardrobe....

....I'd be sure to choose this dress for her.  In some ways, it is a combination of several Clara dresses-
Journey to the centre of the TARDIS she wears a quirky patterned dress with black shirt collar in a similar shape; in another episode, The name of the Doctor, she wears a green and blue tartan mini-dress with a black collar (here).

This one comes from a brand called Closet, whose dresses I have been collecting over the past 6 years.  There's a little independent shop near school that has sold them since before they got into shops like House of Frazer, Debenhams, Asos and online.  That shop still sells them as their main brand and periodically, if I am headed up to London, I nip in there as it is close to the station.
I like a lot of their dresses that are in cotton material- they do do other materials like scuba and synthetics, but it is definitely the cotton ones that I like best. Plus, I know that I can just buy one without trying it on and know it fits me perfectly- their size 8 is always my perfect size.

In case you think that is entirely too tenuous for TARDIS Tuesday, then I did add a Dalek pin badge for a little extra geeky points!

Today, I took my year 6's to play a Javanese Gamelan orchestra. We always study Balinese and Javanese gamelan in the summer term and I am lucky to be able to access one at our local music school for free - firstly because our music school offers that service but also, that I am a gamelan player myself, therefore am allowed to take my own groups to teach them there. We had a great time and they did really well- I took a video of them playing and it sounded really effective! This is the Javanese gamelan in case you are wondering and the piece that we learnt (this is not us!) ....

The other class goes next week! Also, another school has agreed to lend me some timpani so my darling little girl who is playing the timpani parts in orchestra on Bass Chime bars gets to play real timps at last!!! How cool is that!?!

Hope you are all well!

Pond life

In terms of Doctor Who appreciation, I'm a new convert to Amy Pond. I was (and am) still definitely a Clara Oswald girl but since WOMOTM and J bought me the Matt Smith Doctor Who DVD's for Christmas, I've been working my way through and LOVING Amy Pond. I missed most of them first time round because of the Digital Switchover meaning I didn't have TV.

I picked this look from the annals of Amy which she wears in Vincent and the Doctor which I genuinely do think is a fabulous DW episode, I howled and howled at the end, along with Vincent VanGough.

Image from BBC shop

And here, based on items already owned, is Kezzie Pond.

Vincent and the Doctor Cosplay

The lowdown is Charity-shopped teal velvet jacket (originally nice Fairtrade company Bishopstone)
Red sweater- given second hand by friend.
Red Scarf- £1 dodgy Ilford clothes shop
Skirt Primark
Boots: eYe.

Clearly, since it is/was (when these were taken) the middle of Winter, I was NOT going tights-less (and let's be honest, with the length of this skirt, rather too short to risk. I am wearing shorts underneath) .  I lack the pose and the hair (oh woe, short hair does not help Clara and Amy cosplay) but not a bad attempt from my wardrobe.  I've never paired teal and red before so that was a bit of a revelation.

This was taken in my local park. It is SO well used by the community, it was very hard to take this shot. I had gone for a walk and was determined to include a photo that isn't in my garden so had to do a quick timer on the park-bench routine. This was only vaguely anonymous bench.

Hope all is well with you.x

10 reasons I am a Doctor Who geek

I am a dalek

Since the last few blog swaps I've taken part with have resulted in my receiving some Doctor Who memorabilia, it's safe enough to assume that you blog lot get that I like Doctor Who.  However, in the interests of entertainment (never let it be said that I do not pass up an opportunity to let you poke fun at me!), I thought I'd share a few Doctor Who anecdotes about me.

1. Did I ever mention that I once owned over 100 VHS videos of vintage Doctor Who episodes? Alas, I got rid of most of them about 3-4 years ago when I was having to move house. I was made to freecycle them and I regret greatly, their loss. It all began from a Christmas present from my older sister who bought me a TARDIS tin containing 3 videos of A Trial of a Time Lord when I was about 14.  This amazing video shop opened in Ilford and they had brand new Doctor Who videos on sale for £2.99 each. Considering they cost £9.99 in WH Smith etc, this was amazing and so I began building a collection and was bought others for subsequent Christmases/Birthdays.

2. I wrote two letters to Doctor Who magazine (which I subscribed to) and both of which were published/printed. Oh, and both of them were basically my 14 year old self declaring my love for Paul McGann! DWM published a  picture of McGann in a heart next to the former one.

3.  I can probably quote most of the Paul McGann movie... Ahem..."It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy the master was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil deeds was read and the sentence passed.  Then he made his last, and I thought somewhat curious, request. He demanded that I, The Doctor, a rival timelord should take his remains back to our home planet, Gallifrey. It was a request that they should NEVER have granted..." Cue theme music.  (It was that movie which made me like Doctor Who again.)

4.  I attended a Doctor Who convention, Panopticon, in 1996.  I was about 15 and I booked a coach to Coventry for the day, wore my friend's Cricket jumper, got loads of autographs and had a generally wonderful time!! I met 4 Doctors that day, copious companions and a myriad Daleks!

5.  I used to buy the BBC's new novels as they came out in the late 90's.  They have long-gone but again, I wish I still had them.

6. The fact I am writing this post!

7.  My very first year of teaching, one of my favourite pupils bought me a Sonic Screwdriver and psychic paper set as an end of year present. And I was DELIGHTED.

8.  Likewise, during my PGCE year, my pupils bought a poster of Rose and the Doctor for me, mounted it on paper and decorated it with tissue paper flowers. It went up on my 25 year old adult's wall for a good 3 years!

9. I own a 10foot long stripy scarf. And was bought a question mark tanktop for Christmas some years ago- alas it was huge and looked awful!!! And yes, I may have been slightly influenced by Clara Oswald when I bought a some various lots of items in my wardrobe. And then there's the Dalek dress...

10. If you insult Doctor Who, I will scratch your eyes out ;-) mwa ha ha!!!

Thought I'd approach TARDIS Tuesday in a different way this time!
( If you are not a Who-fan, please let me assure you, this type of thing doesn't happen too often, please don't unfollow for me being too eccentric!!!)

I've got the TARDIS blues

TARDIS  Tuesday has been going for four weeks now.  I panicked a little today, wondering how I can keep it original each week, but will just have to explore different permeatations of the same items or think harder.

Today, I decided to don a combination I've been dying to try together but just haven't got around to- that's my blue cloche and blue cape which CBC bought me for Christmases and birthdays respectively over the last 3 years.  It totally wasn't deliberate but they are a perfect match.

TARDIS cape
He's very good when it comes to buying things he thinks I'll like. He was right in both cases!
TARDIS blue cape 3
Since my hair has grown, I can't see how flapperish my hair might look with the hat but haircuts are a seldom experience with me.

TARDIS blue cape 2
"What's going on UNDER the cape?" I hear you say.  Ok, I can oblige.
TARDIS blue cardie
Apple tree boutique horseprint Peter-pan collred dress under TARDIS blue Monsoon cardie.
Paired with black leggings and thrifted brown boots. Sometimes I wish I had a pair of black ankle boots in this style but haven't found any at a price or shape or height I like so I count myself lucky to have found these in a charity shop in my size.  I find so many shoes BORING, expensive or unsuitable that I can't bring myself to buy them

That's my Doctor WHo monster in the background poor little Aloe Vera who has got too big for the window sill- not sure what to do with him!x

Just wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas with many hugs xx

The 6 degrees of Separation of TARDIS Tuesday and Inspiration Monday

CAREY MULLIGAN photo | Carey Mulligan

I should begin this post with a disclaimer that I reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally would like this coat!  Carey Mulligan is the inspiration outfit for this week's Inspiration Monday with the Two birds and she's looking fine!

Alas, I don't own any coat remotely like this, or even a jumper like it, so I decided to play with the general colours of the coat and outfit- TARDIS blue! Excellent, that's two linkies in one! Again!

Aware though that my outfit does not resemble this...

Inspiration Monday and TARDIS Tuesday
Skirt and cardie- thrifted/charity shop, top- F21, Shoes-Reidke from Shoeshop
in Haltwhistle, necklace- gift

One more nod to TARDIS Tuesday and Doctor Who is my necklace.  This is a TARDIS key from the Paul McGann 'era' of Doctor Who.  When I was in my totally mad Doctor Who stage (yes, there was one worse than the present), I received a few cool Doctor Who presents including this TARDIS key which has lain in my shoe hanger (one of those plastic ones) in its presentation box since then, not actually ever worn, just kept! The TARDIS key has evolved over the years but a few doctors used this model- read about it here or see all the different TARDIS keys over the years here.

Hope you had a lovely day.  I had a very, very, very busy day today. Mondays always are but then I had to fit in a final Singing Assembly practice for our KS2 Carol service in between two lessons in KS1 so no break. It's been really hard this year because I am only in KS2 on one morning a week so I can only do my Singing assembly on a Wednesday yet I have to somehow produce an impressive Christmas production on 20minutes week (if I am lucky) for 6 weeks lasting an hour and a half. 12 songs, 12 readers. One me, one rehearsal a week.  I felt a bit disheartened since the KS1 and Foundation Stage productions were brilliant but they can spend all afternoon rehearsing for days in addition to my teaching the children the songs in assembly. KS2- just me.

We had a rehearsal for Orchestra at lunchtime and then I went straight to Year 6 for music- they learnt to play Silent Night and O little town of Bethlehem on the tuned percussion and very well they did too! Not bad for a last minute lesson!

After school the Orchestra and recorder clubs performed to their parents.  I just wish the none-too-few rude parents who talked ALL the way through would think and listen and actually encourage their children by applauding loudly, not the damp squib that they produced.  Sigh.  Still the children were really good!

Oh and the blog title?

Carey Mulligan is wearing this outfit for Inspiration Monday. She starred in Blink, one of the most famous New Doctor Who stories. TARDIS Tuesday Celebrates Doctor Who outfits- BING!

Buy 1 Doctor Who character, get another one free (with added lions.)

I haven't joined in with the Twobirds Inspiration Monday for ages and I felt really sad about that- I like to support my friends' link-ups (especially the Birds, who have been loyal friends for several years now) as well as being a great place to meet other bloggers!  The last couple of looks have not being always doable for me, or I've forgotten to save the image and then I've forgotten, but I made a point of saving this photo last week, knowing I could definitely do this look in my own way.

Doctor Clara 2

I also thought how I could tie it in with TARDIS Tuesday with Maricel at My Closet Catalogue as the dress is definitely very Clara-ish, I'd been planning a Cosplay involving my Tartan dress

Image borrowed from the Fashion of Doctor Who
Obviously, I don't have the right colours- I WAS planning to wear my black short-sleeved shirt underneath it but it was SO cold on Sunday that I didn't dare do bare sleeves so substituted a polo-neck top (in navy though, so the colours are right...)
Doctor Clara 1

Need to get the Clara-esque pose right- she stands with her legs awfully far apart, don't you think? I think I'd feel a bit silly doing that!

FYI, none of the items I'm wearing are current (all at least 3-6 years old) but I'll share anyway, the coat is Debenhams petite, the top and boots- M&S, leggings Primark and the dress- thrifted/charity-shopped.

20141207_143730

Well, anyway, I thought I was all set for TARDIS Tuesday but by the time I'd taken the photos, gone into the shed to find craft-supplies, made a cymbal resonate for 10 seconds by screaming at finding a LARGE spider in a box and done a few other things, the weather had totally changed from the delightfully sunny impression above to DOOM, GLOOM and rain, clouds and wind! Therefore, I deemed it prudent to bundle up all nice and warm for heading off to our town's Christmas fair-the whole high street is closed off to traffic and it turns into a street market- the Rotary club organise it and I think they do a brilliant job!  Then I wandered along in the fake snow flying around, looking all Tom Baker-esque!  I've posted the coat and scarf together before when I dressed up as Tom Baker for Melanie Follybird's Doctor Who Style inspiration aaaaages ago

The town fair was great!  We had a good wander around and looked at lots of stalls.  We bought a few things (I bought CBC a Christmas present- he ALMOST bought me one but I was indecisive over it!), We ate a fair few thingsI ate a foot long Bratwurst (sadly no photos!), we listened to some rock n roll Christmas music and debated whether to impromptually lindy-hop (we didn't) and we went and sang some carols in the church on the High Street, though I'd missed my church's slot to lead.  I do love that church! It's right at the centre of the High Street, where it should be and it is the Hub for Street pastors in the evenings!

I thought I'd share a flavour of the fair by posting a few photos here- enjoy!
