An unexpected joy

Remember before Christmas, I mentioned having won 14 children's books by Robin Stevens?  All of them were her own books and she very kindly signed them all for me to our school and a couple of them even had my name as well!  I announced winning them on our school's Friday Zoom meeting and the children were SO delighted and excited at the prospect of borrowing them. I was pestered mercilessly about when they were going to be available to borrow (they had to be stamped, added to the library catalogue and the suchlike).   This week, several children proudly told me they had borrowed some of them!  It was so sweet how grateful and excited they were.  I loved the fact that I had been able to win them for the children. It also made me really realise how every new book to the library should be heralded and highlighted.

Anyway, fast forward to Tuesday, I had just finished my wonderful Emma Press session with Kate Wakeling (see this post) when I saw a direct message in my Instagram feed from the Aurora Orchestra.

If you don't know about this marvellous orchestra, they are a recent formation by Nicholas Collon and Robin Ticciati.  The orchestra has been incredibly successful and had a residency at the Barbican and have played at all the major concert halls.  They are well known for their innovative approaches to concert going. Every year for the BBC proms, they perform a major work for orchestra completely from memory. Every. Single. Member. Of. The. Orchestra. Has. No. Music!  This is an incredible feat!  I am lucky enough to have been conducted by Nick Collon a few times-he conducted my regular orchestra and conducted my music camp playing Daphnis and Chloe- the most amazing piece I have ever performed!

They've also started some brilliant children's work and have an education programme (which a friend works on).

Back to my Instagram message, I opened it to find that I had WON their recent insta giveaway for tickets to their upcoming Children's concert based on the Wolf, the Duck and the Mouse by Jon Klassen.  I had entered on behalf of my children at school as I thought it would be wonderful to be able to offer it as a giveaway/prize for one of our families!

I was so excited to win it!! Today, I posted the giveaway on our school messaging site and already got some excited families entering who have never been to a concert!  It was such a joy to be able to post something like that and I just wish I could offer it to all of them!

The Aurora marketing  manager was very kind and sent me a couple extra of the books to give as runner  up prizes too!

It really is an exciting thing to be able to give something to people- I felt buoyed by this opportunity all the way home! It made me think that perhaps I could buy a couple of tickets for my local orchestra- not quite the same but perhaps an opportunity (that isn't so expensive!) to offer another chance to someone, particularly as the next concert features the wonderful Vltava by Bedrich Smetana!

Something different

I have been interested in poetry from when I was a child. One of my favourite books was Brian Pattern's Gargling with Jelly.  I grew to like it more through Enid Blyton's mystery books as there was a character called Ernie Good (nephew of PC Good) who tried to write poetry. His poems were always improved by the clever "Fatty" (Frederick Algernon Trotteville).  When I was around 13, I started writing my own poems in a pretty floral notebook I was given.  Life became busy after that into my teens and I didn't really write any. Then I commenced Teacher Training and began writing a few poems, inspired by the poems I was teaching- I even shared a few in the early days of this blog (not labelled so hard to find and labelled later. and here (not the best poems but soothing for me to write).

I bought some poetry books in my 20's.  A friend of my Grandad's, from his violin making classes called Roger Downer had published 2 poetry books and he gave me some copies.  I started learning some poems by heart when I got to know my Father in Law, the wonderful WOMOTM.

We had a push on poetry in school and I started setting some poems to music for the children in Singing Assembly to help with the push on poetry from a musical angle. I wrote a few poems as well.

Again, life became busy but I started to see poems around me.  Do any of you remember the hilarious blogger, Lakota- Faith Hope and Charity Shopping?  Well, we are still Insta buddies and she has been publishing her brilliant Children's poetry on her insta and in some publications.  A musical friend of mine, Kate Wakeling is a published poet of 2 children's books (and adult ones) and we got in touch through Insta.  I bought her two books for school- Cloud Soup and Moon Juice- both of which I really enjoyed.

On Sunday, I saw on her Insta, an advert for this event:

Poetry had come up again in a recent Reading Inset and so I really wanted to sign up for it- Poetry, as I said, has always been something I enjoy.

I mentioned it to Kate to ask about timings and she said it would be lovely to see me so I enrolled onto it. It ran from 4pm-5.30pm via Zoom. I joined in at school as I wouldn't be able to get home in time.

Ah, it was lovely to have poetry read to us, to talk about techniques and what works well. How the mundane can be made magical, how deep feelings can be explored, how feelings can be personified, how the ordinary can be made absurd and how ambiguity can be used well. Also how free verse can be really a great way into poetry and not getting too bogged down in a particular style.

We had 2 creative tasks based on 2 of Kate's poems, I shared my first one with the group which was based on Kate's Paeon: 11 uses for a Pea.  My one was 9 uses for a Whiteboard pen lid.  It was really enjoyable to sit and write and think  in a different way and to hear how other people's creativity sparkled in the tasks- I really enjoyed hearing the voices and the words of this group of people I didn't know.

I came out of there feeling positive and inspired and looking forward to trying to get myself writing again.

It wasn't intended as such but felt like a nice early birthday present to myself.  I had a million other things I should be doing but somehow this felt important!

If you are interested in Kate's books, children's poetry, writing events or general poetry,  head over to the Emma Press to find out more!

TARDIS Tuesday- In the Forest of the Night Clara Oswald

Hello!

Greetings mes amies! It's been a while. Today was my first day back at school after the half term holiday.

For TARDIS Tuesday this week, I decided to wear quite a casual outfit worn by Clara Oswald in series 8- In the Forest of the Night.

Interestingly enough, the last time I wore this was in 2019- the day before I went to Bruges.  I wore this, this time, the day AFTER I got back from Bruges. Total coincidence!

As Clara/Jenna Coleman's outfits go, this one is pretty easy to wear.

Let's have a look at it:

She wears a grey marl cropped sweater from Topshop along with some indigo denim trousers from Just Female and black Converse trainers.  She has a mustardy/tan jacket which she wears around her waist and a black leather Deena and Ozzy rucksack.

Here's my version:

It's an easy outfit to recreate. My sweater is the same Topshop one- it's a cropped sweater and so you need to wear it over a dress or with something high waisted.
Luckily, my jeans are high-waisted- they are from ASOS and very similar to the Screen accurate ones but a different brand.
I added my Converse high tops- not sure where my low tops are: I bought these in Bali in 2006- yes, I have owned them longer than I have been a teacher!
I didn't wear a tan/yellow jacket but instead wore my itchy mustard cardigan bought by my lovely in-laws for me. I went for a walk with my friend Christina from my old church. She came and picked me up and we went for a walk along the creek. It was a lovely impromptu plan and we were pleased to see each other. I brought my things in my TARDIS rucksack which I am wearing in the picture.

This was a good outfit for an easy walk- I ended up wearing the cardigan most of the time as it was breezy.
Can you believe I am still unwell?!  It's almost 2 weeks.  I thought I was getting better in Bruges but I really couldn't sleep last night and I've felt grim all day with a very sore throat coming back again as well as the snot. It's annoying!  I went to bed around 11pm and at 1.27am, I got up and went to the spare room to see if a change of scene would help me sleep. It did but I was a bit of a wreck this morning to be honest! I hope and pray I sleep well today!

Hope all is well with you!

What is it? #74 - The prodigal post returns

It's been almost 3 years since I last shared one of my 'What is it?' posts.
Here's the premise of these posts.
I share a picture of something: a cloud, a tree, a vegetable, an object, a fold in a curtain, which bears resemblance to something else besides its obvious form, e.g. a potato that looks like a seal or a cloud that looks like Zeus shooting firebolts, or a curtain pattern that resembles a violin (yes, we've had all those).
Your job is too scrutinize the image and see what YOU see in the image, besides the obvious.
You then share it in the comments.
I then reveal what I saw in a future post, alongside the illustrious commenters and share any similarities in opinions. It's fun to try and see what other people saw so DO join in the fun and leave a comment. I promise I'm not doing some sort of psychological test!  Please do comment, even if you haven't before, so I am not a Larry No-mates in the return to this post type!
Here's this time's image:

It's a cloud that reminded me of something else. What do you see this shaped cloud as?
Leave a comment saying what you thought!

What about last time?

I shared this cloud in August 2020 from my holiday to the Northumbrian coast.

I thought I saw Steven Spielburg's creation, ET (Extra Terrestial) holding out his magic glowing finger, facing to the side!!

What did our lovely commenters see?

  1. It is a playful dog. It is not seen in its entirely, but the head and paws are clearly seen.

    ReplyDelete
  2. A weightlifter flexing his arm, but it is only his arm flexing. I have a strange imagination !

    ReplyDelete
  3. Ohh now I see it a frog sticking his tounge out !

    ReplyDelete
  4. It's a fluffy dog jumping across the sky :-) xxx

    ReplyDelete
  5. Jan said some kind of creature holding a pipe - maybe a bear.

I see the head and front legs of a puppy.

    ReplyDelete
I loved these ideas!
Everyone saw a creature and several people saw the finger/hand stretching out.

Do join in the fun!

TARDIS Tuesday- Amy Pond from Vincent and the Doctor

Greetings!

As I type this post, our neighbour's dog is howling like Hound of the Baskervilles and repeatedly barking loudly and continuously.  It REALLY doesn't like to be left alone and at night, it cries, howls and barks.  We only remember it does it, when it does it! I wonder if the neighbours who do not adjoin them, hear it quite as loudly and distressingly (it sounds SO bereft and melancholic!) as we do?

I thought for TARDIS Tuesday, I'd return to an outfit I have worn a version of twice before.  Last shared in April 2020, (and originally March the 9th 2015), I am wearing an outfit worn by 11th Doctor, Scottish companion, Amy Pond.

It is considered her most iconic (and probably most-cosplayed) outfit and worn in the most beautiful episode, Vincent and the Doctor.

She wears a tiny black mini-skirt, a red v-neck sweater, brown knee-high boots, a H&M red crocheted scarf, a teal coat from Jasper Conran (at Debenhams)

And here's moi!
Now, the reason I decided to wear this outfit is one that the eagle-eyed of you may have noticed...
It's pretty much the same outfit I wore 2 weeks ago as Amy Pond but with a different coat and the addition of a scarf!

Pretty much everything I am wearing belonged to someone else I knew first.
The coat is CBC's.  He bought it to dress as Newt Scamander for Harry Potter night at his school.
It's a lovely coat which he doesn't wear very often. It is, thus, fair game.
The skirt and jumper came from my Canadian work colleague when she moved back home. I have so many regrets that I didn't stay in touch with her. She was so lovely. CBC is actually FaceBook friends with her!
The belt belonged to my Mum.
The only bits I bought are the red scarf which I bought in a charity shop (but forgot to wear it with the ends thrown back!)
The boots are the recently fixed Italian leather boots.

Since it's Winter, this was only worn for the photos. I just swapped coats after I'd taken the last set of photos! I will wear a version of this for school but with a longer skirt! OR leggings!

I hope you are having a lovely day and there are no unhappy dogs howling in the background of YOUR life!

Not my usual style

 Hi there!

I hope you are well.

I've unfortunately got yet another cold. It started Wednesday night with swollen tonsils and blocked sinuses.  Thursday I didn't feel well but Friday, after a good night's sleep, I felt better.  Friday night, after a gamelan rehearsal at LSO St Lukes, I went home. When I went to bed, I felt a bit snotty but during the night, it felt interminable- I couldn't sleep, I was totally bunged up and my throat was really raw so breathing through my mouth was hard. I kept drinking water and then kept needing the loo, then I kept coughing. CBC finally came to bed after conking out on the sofa, after a work meal out. I went to sleep in the spare room and settled down better in there but still had to get up a few more times and my sleep was broken. Why are the nights so long with a cold!?

Once I got up, I felt better.

I cancelled my flute quartet session as I was obviously not wanting to share  my germs in a small room. I was relieved that one of the other flautists was also still not well so had been thinking of cancelling. We had some cake and cheese-related banter on our Whatsapp group.

CBC borrowed my Brompton to catch a train and rescue his car which he had left near the restaurant last night. I went and ripped open 155 teabags from the school 'teabag compost' and emptied the compost. I then did all the washing up from the past few days (yes, I know. Don't judge), put some washing on and put away clean washing and cleaned the kitchen worktops.

I eventually showered and dressed to head into town to pick up some supplies from the Refill shop quite late on my bike, prepared with mask.

Alas, it was closed (Google lied) so I went to have a look in the charity shop for something I was looking for. It's very spacious and was totally empty. I didn't find it but I did end up buying a suitcase! My good-sized travel bag has got holes in the bottom of it and a rip at the seam by the zip (can it be fixed?)  and I knew I'd need. It's medium-sized so it was perfect for a short trip of a few days.

I also bought a brand new pair of TurtleDove Cashmere wrist-warmers and a geography game.

I thought I'd share what I wore as it's very much different from my regular style (well, that's what everyone who has seen me wear this jacket says).

I bought this denim coat from Primark with my niece about 4 weeks ago. I had no intention of buying it or anything like this. My niece wanted to try a couple of things on when we were shopping. I decided to try this coat on to take some pictures in the changing room mirrors as it looked similar to a coat which is going to be worn by new Who companion, Ruby Sunday (who I am not going to cosplay for TT as she is just too young and hip!).  It's not my style so I thought it would be a something to try whilst she tried her things on.When I tried it on, it felt SO cosy and comfortable- it is thickly quilted. My niece really liked it and somehow egged me on into buying it.  I have not bought anything from Primark for at least 4-5 years so I felt a bit uncomfortable...
That said, I've worn it on a few weekends and everyone has commented how much they like it!

I wore it today with this striped turtle neck from RiverIsland which I bought from Lorelai LQ's jumble sale, with a cotton waistcoat from Whistles (2nd hand)

The trousers are my green Porfell corduroy trousers from Seasalt which I bought from Bury St Edmunds in October. I have worn them so much- they are the perfect Winter trouser.
The boots are from Leggero and I bought them from Finale, Corbridge in 2020. They are Goretex, totally waterproof and still going strong. Lined with Sheepskin, they are the perfect Winter cycling boot.
I added my F&F snow-leopard print beret and have been cosy and happy all day.

I am so glad it is half-term. It's been only 5.5 weeks but the Jan-Feb half-term is usually the miserable one. It's been hard but ok.  Having had 2 Wednesdays where I wasn't in school (once at the LSO for INSET and once the teacher strike day) has made the difference.

There have been some positive lessons and some hard ones.  The Year 4's have made some good progress and I haven't dreaded their lessons as much term.  The Year 6's have been good and have produced some admirable performances.   Singing Assemblies have been positive.
I've only had a few Gamelan rehearsals and that one concert last Saturday so I haven't been too overwhelmed with rehearsals either.
I'm looking forward to some rest AND fun at half term. Just need to kick this cold away!

FUNGI

At the weekend, after my concert in Bickley, it was lovely as my Dad drove to come and pick me up!  It was so nice to say, "My Dad's coming to get me!" when people wondered if I was going to battle the 3 hour rail replacement journey back home. We chatted in the car and then sat companionably at the table sharing my leftover Greggs baguette. Then my Stepmum and sister came down and we all had a chat before all heading off to bed.  I slept well! The next day, after breakfast, my sister and I went for a circular walk from the house.  As we walked from a public footpath to the main road, near the end, I spotted a stump covered in Turkey Fantail fungus, looking in rather good condition.

Sometimes, it can achieve some real variety of colour and whilst there weren't any of the startling blues you can sometimes see, I love the gradations of colour here.

TARDIS Tuesday- ?????????? The Seventh Doctor ?????????????

I'm always really excited when I share an outfit for TARDIS Tuesday which is based on the ACTUAL Doctor's outfit- it doesn't happen THAT often, in comparison to companion interpretations on here.

Today, I am looking at the final CLASSIC Doctor- Sylvester McCoy.

Have I featured this outfit more?

Well....yes, and no. Mainly yes....but not quite YES!

I did a version of the 7th Doctor's main outfit here in December 2018 and I also did a version of Petronella Osgood's outfit in March 2020 which is basically an on-show cosplay of this outfit...but not THIS actual outfit!

This time, compared to my 2018 version of the Seventh Doctor, I am choosing a specific episode to portray.  This is the outfit that Sylvester McCoy donned in the penultimate 7th Doctor serial (before Doctor Who was cancelled for more than 15 years). The story was called 'The Curse of Fenric'.

Before we go onto the outfit here, I have to share a little bit of information about this story.

I was a child of 8 when this story aired.  It was set during WW2. Ace and the Doctor arrive at a coastal location  in Northunberland (AHRGH, only just discovered it is Northumberland when researching this post!) where there is a secret military base close.  Some ancient artefacts are found which, when placed within a supercomputer, awaken an ancient creature called Fenric which then calls Haemovores from the water. Ace makes friends with 2 girls who invite her to swim with her but she's scared of the water and leaves. The girls are dragged under the water (by the Haemovores) and when they emerge out of the water, they are changed- vampiric in appearance, pale faces, red mouths, fangs, massive talons, hair wild and they plunge down on people and kill them like vampires.

This story really, really scared me and I had persistent intrusive thoughts and nightmares about it for over 4-5 years following watching it.  My rational head told me they weren't real but I used to 'think' the girls lived in my Mum's bedroom at night and anytime I went to the bathroom (opposite it)- I had to keep the door open and kept my eyes fixed on her door so they couldn't 'come out'. At night, I slept with all my teddies around my head.  Even into my teenage years, if I was ever in a dark, unknown place, I would think of them.  Consequently, I have always hated ANY media involving vampires and cannot bear for anyone to touch my ankles in water (you know when your friends or younger sister or husband grabs your ankle under water as a joke and pulls it? Just mine??).  Someone shared an image from the episode on Insta recently and I commented on it to my older sister (she who has never grabbed my ankle). Even some 30 years later, she commented, "OOOoh, that's the Curse of Fenric- you were TERRIFIED by that!"

I'm saying this, because, when I was going to find some photos for this post, any photo in which I saw the 2 girls in, my heart pounded and I felt slightly sick! Luckily, I don't have the intrusive thoughts any more but it just shows that things can really affect you as a child.

Anyway, enough of my childhood reminiscences, onto the outfit:

There's a lovely description of the 7th Doctor's outfit on Mark Francis's (from the Great British Sewing Bee) blog.

This outfit was a deviation from his outfit earlier in his tenure:

  • Tan duffle coat
  • Panama hat
  • Question Mark tanktop
  • White shirt
  • Paisley tie
  • Paisley scarf
  • Brown and white two-tone brogues
  • Brown jacket
  • Brown checked trousers
  • Question Mark umbrella

And here I am!

I must say, I was mightily pleased with this ensemble. I donned it for photos on a Sunday but rewore it for school (sans duffle coat, jacket, hat, umbrella) for school 2 days later.

I started with a basic white blouse from M&S along with some M&S or Next brown trousers- both of which were charity-shopped. Both very comfortable.
The next item to add was a green Paisley tie of CBC's - my top fits higher than Sylv's and the blouse doesn't really work with a tie so you can't really see it here very well.
Next, I added the Question Mark tanktop which was from Lovarsi but I purchased it on sale at the Doctor Who exhibition in Cardiff for a reasonable £29.99 (it's £45.99 on the website). The kids at school love it when I wear this (and I always make jokes about why I am asking them so many questions when I wear it!)
You can see above, I am donning a brown tweedy jacket above. It belongs to CBC. I wore it whilst he was out. Neither of us have a deep brown suit jacket and my own tweedy jacket is very cropped so looked stupid with this outfit. Shhhhhhh!!!!

I bought the red paisley scarf from a charity shop a while back with the intention of wearing it for a Sylv cosplay. This is the first time I've worn it!
The hat is also charity-shopped and is a genuine Panama hat from Lilywhites which I found in Oxfam for CBC brandnew for £5.99 (they cost hundreds)- it is looking a little worse for wear after getting squished on a few holidays over the last decade but is still functional.

The shoes are from Bleyer, a wonderful dance-shoe company which has been going for many years, but has sadly, recently ceased trading.  CBC bought these for me one birthday when we were swingdancing regularly. I really miss going to dance lessons and socials- it was great when there was a local class but it hasn't come back since Covid lockdowns and the socials for JiveSwing are not in our part of Essex anymore.
The final element of this outfit is the Question Mark umbrella. When I first became a Doctor Who fan in the 90's, my friend Ruth and I went to a Doctor Who day at Langton's in Hornchurch.  We saw this umbrella for sale for £69.99.  So much money to me then. I thought about it for years.  Then, a few years ago, a company who made a few Doctor Who products had a massive sale on their products. Someone mentioned this umbrella was selling for £14.99. I checked and it indeed was. Postage was £7. I jumped straight in and bought it and very glad I did as they are very expensive now- £49.99 from Lovarzi.

Ah, how could I forget, the duffle coat.  My one was 2nd hand on eBay from Rocha John Rocha and is really too big for me. I wanted to donate it to a refugee appeal I heard about but I never got around to getting to the location as a non-driver. I hope to donate it to a homeless or refugee charity at some point but thought I'd wear it before that.

What do you think?

Just to say Hello!

 Hi!

I came on here to share a cloud post but the photo hasn't come through and I'm not sure what else to write!

It's been a busy week but I have got some things done.

Two days with train strikes this week but luckily, on Wednesday, the first of them coincided with the teacher's strike. My union, the NASUWT chose not to strike but there's only 3 of us teachers at my school who are not NEU so my Headteacher told me to work from home as I wasn't teaching and I am making up the extra time I gained by giving my PPA on Fridays to other teachers. I was grateful. It's amazing, when I don't go to school, I am so full of energy and get loads done! It's when I stop that I realise just how much it takes out of me on a daily basis.

I had a lovely experience on that day as a parcel arrived from Ang with some things she had beautifully adjusted for me and then we had a chat on the phone which was a joy!

I made a large stir fry with some tempeh I got from Lidl for only £1.30 as part of Veganuary.

Today, I couldn't get to school till 9.20pm because of the strikes. It was a good day - my Year 6 pupils were performing their own ternary/binary structure pieces, inspired by the Baroque sonata. After that, I had to revideo 2 students who I have put forward for solos at our Royal Albert Hall concert in March.  I recorded 7 of them last night at choir and had the difficult job of picking 2 to put forward for the chance.  We're doing well with learning the songs for the Albert Hall- we've learnt all but 1 1/3 of the songs-next week I will need to complete the 3rd of that song and teach the final one.

Had a curious experience today as one of the year 6 girls, (who has quirky style),who often admires things I'm wearing (recently, I overheard her say, "Mrs *** has such good style!" as I walked down the corridor- I called back, "Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanks!") suddenly commented on the boots I was wearing and it turned out she'd been looking them up online as she wanted to get a pair like mine! It was flattering but slightly surprising!

Tomorrow, I am performing Brahms' requiem at a church near Bromley. I was going to stay at my Dad's tonight as it's not so far from him but because of the strikes, I couldn't get there so now I have to contend with Greater Anglia engineering works and it'll take me 3 hours to get to the rehearsal. Sigh.  I will stay at Dad's after.

CBC is doing a concert with our local Essex orchestra. I wasn't needed for this concert as there are only 2 flutes, hence why I accepted the gig in Kent. Sadly, the lovely 1st flautist is ill so she phoned me today to ask if I was able to cover- I was so sad not to be able to help out.

CBC and I have some lovely plans for half term which I will tell you more about soon.  Sadly, I've got to get my school reports done before that and some epic planning!!!

Eeek!

Right, I must get to bed as I have to get up early to trudge the epic journey to near Bromley!
