You know how some things change when you get older?
For instance, I used to dislike olives as a teen but in my 30's, I discovered that they are, in fact, delicious!
And, I was really not fond of vegetable soups and stews as a child, but from my 20's, loved them.
Now that I own my own garden and have water butts, every time it rains, especially in the Summer, or it looks imminent, I am cheering the rain on! "COME ON!!! Fill the waterbutts!"
I gleefully text my Mum (noting she has done the same reciprocally) saying, "Freee water!" and "Yay, don't have to water tonight!" and we both gleefully compare waterbutt quotas. And, when you discover that accidentally, you have left the waterbutt tap ON (because it had emptied and you can't quite remember what the 'OFF' position is when there is water to show you), and after a night of rain, you have missed the opportunity of a free 100l of water- it is quite simply, the worst thing and you feel wracked with guilt towards your poor garden!
And there, I find myself, dressed in my nightie and bare feet with a cursory raincoat thrown over the top, out in the pouring rain, filling up buckets from the connected waterbutt to the unconnected one, getting absolutely soaked in the process, to maximize on the rainfall!
You know you've grown up.
You know you've turned into your Mother!!!
I was so disappointed to discover I'd left the tap of my water butt open a little while ago. Nice and full now though, the only downside is that due to the quirks of my house there's only space for one!
ReplyDeleteI've also experienced losing a taste for things I used to love, but I suppose it all works out well as there are so many new things I enjoy.
I can fully understand your water butt excitement, Kezzie! Free water and less work? Yay! Although we do not have a water butt, we have water from an underground well which we can pump up by way of an old-fashioned pump. That's free water with an additional workout :-) xxx
ReplyDeleteWe run around like things possessed, taking the lids of or water butts and collecting receptacles to catch water. We've discovered that the wheelbarrow is a particularly good. Definitely nothing like my mother, she'd be down the pub! xxx
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh...yes my dad always said you don't understand gardens until you are in your 30's and i'm sure that's exactly what happened...our garden has been a god send these past few months. I can also agree with the 'free water!' xx
ReplyDeleteIt is so true. Funny how we change with time!
ReplyDeleteThis really made me smile, as I can totally relate! I'm obsessed with my water level. On top of that I've been comparing tomato plants with my Mum and brother all summer long.
ReplyDeleteI used to hate olives too, until my 30's. I only liked the green ones to start with but now I prefer the black.
I got a feather duster for my birthday (after I requested one) so I could deal with the cobwebs without having to get the vacuum cleaner out, I immediately started whizzing around the room, happily ridding the ceiling and corners of cobwebs. Who have I become? Oh yes, that's right, I'm turning in to my Mother...
It happens to us all.
xx
