On contemplating one's slippers

I think one of my favourite presents this year was this pair of slippers from my Mum.  They come from a cottage industry in Snowdonia.  Hand-crocheted and every pair unique, she had them made in TARDIS blue as the 'main' colour as it were.  They are lined with Snowdonian sheep wool and have non-slippery suede leather soles.   My mum is a firm advocate (I always want to say avocado!) of handmade presents like this from small sellers and they are so comfortable, my feet feel like they are receiving a hug when I put them on.

It's funny because as a child, I wanted nothing on my feet. I would wander around in bare feet and in our non-centrally heated house, would nestle close to the expensive fan heater with my feet pressed against it, but I refused to put socks and slippers on.

Now, I cannot live without my slippers, summer of winter.  They have to be proper boot style or proper shoe- preferably sheepskin.  My slippers are my workhorses and I will use each pair for years.

Up until this Christmas, I was using my old sheepskin slippers. I have a lot of affection for them.  CBC was taking part in the Somerset Sportif, some 100mile cycle ride.  We stayed near Wookey Hole. I had made my own plans for that day.  I made my way to Cheddar Gorge where I had the most wonderful experience potholing in the secret caves there. Except perhaps partially for canoeing, it's the one outdoor pursuit that I have no fear of. I delight in crawling through tight spaces in the dark, not knowing what is coming next. In fact, I think that's what I like about it. As someone who has a great fear of heights and fast activities (though I have made myself do them) I love the slow pace of it.  It was a very muddy experience despite the boiler suits we wore and I was rather wet and stained with the clay of the caves. As I finished in the caves and went to climb Jacob's Ladder and visit all the other experiences, it started raining. I was drenched to the core of me.   Feeling rather woebegone, I entered into one of the Cheddar gorge shops and it was destiny that I found the only pair of size 8 sheepskin slippers and they were on sale. Solid heeled booties, they have served me since that time. It's a shame that they still have strong heels but they have massive holes in the toes- I'm not sure if I couldn't get them sewn up or not, but I have staunchly worn them since them.

Before that, my previous pair, bought in Hereford when I was there for the weekend singing in the cathedral for the services (I used to sing with a deputising cathedral choir), they too lasted half a decade- from Steadman and Simpson, they were knee high! But this better not become my history of slippers or I shall lose you.

I shall end with saying,it's funny something I shunned for so many years should be something that I treasure and use for years-even though in all other aspects of my wardrobe, I will buy many duplicates, too many really (let's use the example of brooches), my slippers are my long term friends.

As I move from brown sheepskin to Joseph's technicolour dream slippers, long may they adorn my feet!

I know it's a bit of random topic to blog on but it's my blog so thus, bizarre witterings are a matter of course.

What's your slipper story?

  1. Slippers? Yes please! I wear mine much of the time, too. Mine are nearly as charming. Just some gray ones that I bought to keep my feet cozy. Yours are so cute and colorful.. what a fun and thoughtful gift.

  2. Oh your Mum is so right. Handmade things from small stores. We need more of that. I'm a barefoot girl. I even drive barefoot. I think that may be illegal so please don't turn me in to the police.

  3. I have slippers but I like wearing socks in winter except when it's very cold, i wear slippers over my socks. In the summer, I become a child and go bare feet in the house. I want to be grounded with the earth energy... Not a bad thing.

I like homemade things too and your slippers are charming and look very warm and cosy. A very thoughtful gift...

  5. It seems we all have a cosy relationship with our slippers. I don't feel completely on holiday without them.
I too went for years in some clog type sheepskin slippers. They didn't die they just became old. So I traded them in for some cosy sheepskin boots. Soooo cosy. But during autumn and spring tooo hot. So I have some not unlike your current ones for everyday.
    Yay sheepskin and wool!
Yours are gorgeous and made by hand is always best!!

  7. What a thoughtful present your mum bought for you. I like my feet to be covered, I've gone more for slipper socks over the year rather than traditional slippers, so easy to pop in the wash and gives me the excuse of having lots of pairs!

  8. I traded in some M&S vouchers for a pair of suede moccasin slippers. They are lovely. But I keep a pair of ancient clogs by the back door to change into when I dash outside in the rain to put stuff in the wheelie bin. My last pair of slippers died of damp and exposure.

  10. Oh yes!! Slippers. I wouldn't be without them. I have two pairs on the go at the moment - sheepskin ankle bootees and faux-fur/suede "ugg" boot lookalikes (but better because they have little paw prints embroidered on them!)

  11. I was exactly the same as a child, I hated slippers. My Mum would constantly tell me to 'put something on your feet'. I never did.
Now they're the first thing I put on in the morning, I hate bare feet indoors (on grass is fine, sand is fine, but not indoors).
In the summer months I find the slipper equivalent of flip flops, but for cooler months I have a boot option and a slip on option.
Currently I have a rather tatty pair of mouse (or they might be rabbit - the jury is out) slip-ons and a black pair of booties with a few sequins.
I have my eye on a pair of sheepskin slip-ons to replace my mice/rabbits.
Mine don't last as long as yours do though, how do you manage that? Anything from 6 months to 18 months for me.
What a lovely idea for a post. And I agree with your Mum on buying handmade from small businesses when possible.

  12. Love your technicolour slipper boots! I prefer to be barefoot, although I do have some very old pink slipper boots for when it's freezing cold!

  13. They look so colourful and warm. I need slippers, my feet are icy cold now. I have tights then some new thick socks they are wool and silk from M &S, but my feet need my slipper boots on which are like ankle boots but have seen better days.
Do you know where your mum got them as I love yours. And a bit of a copy cat!

  14. Slippers...as far as I remember I used to wear them when I was a kid, but I can't remember whether I put them on willing or did my mother made me. These days, I love wearing slippers and I can't image going barefoot. That all being said, I like to be barefoot in Summer, but only then...only when it is really hot! I can imagine surving Winter without warm socks and comfortable slippers.

I do have a slipper story for you. A foreigner that moved to Croatia apparently wrote a book named Papuča (meaning 'a slipper'). He says us Croatian fear only two things: draft and walking without slippers. He wrote how his mother in law (he married a Croatian hence the move) made him wear slippers. I didn't actually read the book , only an article about it, but it got stuck in my head because it is funny and it is true.

Those slippers your mother made for you are fantastic!!! tardis blue stands out nicely and I do like the other colours she used.

  16. They're brilliant! I rarely wear slippers, I like my toes to be free so I mostly go barefoot indoors!

  17. Yes never as a child or teen did I wear slippers, but sometime in my late 20s they begun appearing for me, always so boring but comfy, and I wear them very much now. Those new ones are brilliant and cool! Would love to have seen the knee highs :)

  18. These look seriously comfortable, warm and just lovely. How nice to have home made slippers. My new ones are by The North Face, they have started using more synthetic materials in their products which I definitely approve of - mine are the thermoball tent mules and I love them :)

These slippers are seriously comfortable. I first encountered them about 3 years ago at an annual camp I go to. The girl who makes these was actually wearing hers on the field where we had our handmade craft fair. I now have 3 pairs. The first pair are rainbow, the second are rainbow with a cream base colour (the wool is from the Blue Faced Leicester) and I now have a 3rd pair with a turquoise base colour. My granddaughter (Kenzie's niece) has a pink pair from a couple of years ago and now a rainbow pair like mine. I also bought a rainbow/turquoise pair for a friend for Christmas. They have to be the nicest, most comfortable slippers I have ever owned.

  20. Yes, I've always been a fan of slippers. We were a "shoes off at the door" house and I have always been like that in other people's houses as well.

  21. Those slippers are fantastic; I love how colourful they are! I'm very much a no-slippers girl; they make my feet feel claustrophobic (I know, I know - I'm very odd). That said, I had a pair of curly-toed felt slippers on my wishlist for about 6 years; but that's because I really want to be an elf :p (see earlier comment re: oddness) xxx

  22. I looove my slippers, they're the most essential thing I wear I think! These ones are so pretty, that blue is my favourite colour, and who can resist a rainbow knit? ;)
