I alluded to my Mum's amazing cake baking during my childhood in my Carebears post (thanks to Steph/ven who helped locate the Carebears episode I longed to see!!) . I asked her to send me some photos of some of the cakes and I thought it was amusing how these cakes represented a lot of toy and TV cartoon interests from the 80's.
Which of these do you remember?
For my sixth birthday, my Mum made me this Carebear cake. Cheer bear was my favourite bear (apart from Hugs and Tugs) and perhaps my love of rainbows comes from here?
One particular toy type I loved was my Cheeky Mice. I owned the toy version of this cake- it was a picnic basket which had plates and knives and forks in and it doubled up as the mouse cottage. Each one of my friends took home an iced-mouse in their party bag as well as cake and the usual suspects. I remember chewing the tails of my cheeky mice and I did love them so this makes me happy! This particular cake was the My Little Pony Stable. It was my sister's favourite toy (I had Carebears, she had My Little Pony) and I thought the craftsmanship of this was brilliant!!
Remember Pinkie from my childhood memory post? Here he is immortalized in icing and sponge! The Pink Panther was a hugely popular cartoon when I was very young. Apparently, my sister and her friend Mary were bouncing on sis's bed when my Mum put this on the table and the vibrations knocked his head off!!!
Finally, who can forget Snoopy and Woodstock? This was another of my sister's cakes and again, very iconic for that time!
Did you have any specially made cakes like this?
And, do you remember these toys!?

Oh wow, you were indulged when you were young. How so nice of your mother to make those popular cakes. I made cakes for my kids too. I remember buying some special cake pans and decorating cakes. Your cakes were spectacular.
ReplyDeleteI got my first birthday cake when I was married and had 4 kids. One of my sweet neighbour made it for me. It was a round cake and she made me carry it over to the neighbour's house and told to make sure her daughter didn't saw it because it was her daughter's birthday cake and they had a surprise party for her. When I walked in the door I started to explain about the cake but everyone shouted Happy Birthday Julia. I was stunned.... They really surprised me. I never expected a birthday cake for me. I thought it was very sweet of them to do this for me.
Hugs,
JB
Oh how lovely they did that for you Julia! You deserve this beauty!.
DeleteYes, I suppose my mum did indulge us with the cakes. I look at it now and I can see the amount of effort she put in. This was probably up until I was about 9!
She, like me, really does love being creative. I think I get that from her.
DeleteWow, those are really amazing! I'll have to show my sister the mouse one, she'll be so excited that someone else knows it and chewed it's tail! It's funny, all her Get Along Gang figures have their noses rubbed off because she would carry them in her wee hand and her thumb rubbed the noses (same with Sylvanian Families). Your Mum is very creative anyway, brilliant post. I got your email, will reply tomorrow ; )
ReplyDeleteOh poor decapitated Panther. These are so brilliant and fun. Made with heavy helpings of love to be sure. I am sure I had theme cakes, probably Star Wars, but my childhood is mostly a void to me. Loving the return to the 80s!!
ReplyDeleteI can tell where your creativity came from!
ReplyDeleteYour Mum did an amazing job, and I love all the stories. She must have been livid when the head fell off!
We had very simple cakes living in PNG but we felt loved.
I have problems making cakes with all the pressure around the birthday parties anyway. So my kids aren't as lucky as you.
My kids' birthdays are 5 days apart, so it's a busy time :-)

These are great! The cake that most sticks in my mind from my childhood was a Pocahontas one, a chocolate cake with chocolate logs, edible coconut grass and a disney princess doll on top. It was filled with banana buttercream because that was my favourite! All made by a family friend because my Mum was not a talented baker!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, what amazing cakes. I remember my mum making me a fairy princess castle cake for one birthday, it had ice cream cone turrets which went home in the party bags with my friends. She used to have a Jane Asher (?) cake book which was amazing and we'd look through it with awe. I don't know what the cheeky mice are and the pink panther used to scare me.
ReplyDeleteWow, these are amazing! You have a very clever mum!
ReplyDeleteThe only cake I actually remember from my childhood was a Tom & Jerry for my 8th one that was purchased from the supermarket. There is photographic evidence that I had a teddy bear shaped cake for my 2nd birthday, though. And I must have had a cake for my 6th birthday because I actually got a party! (A joint one with the daughter of my mum's best friend).
Pink Panther, My Little Pony, Snoopy... thanks for the trip down memory lane :-D
What incredible cakes! The Pink Panther and Snoopy were my era. I had lots of Snoopy and Woodstock toys. xxx
ReplyDeletesuch a lovely trip down memory lane. That cheer bear cake is amazing. (fun to realize where your love for rainbows comes from...) Your mother has talent, that's for sure. She made you some fantastic cakes, I loved seeing them all. Cheeky Mouse cake is also very impressive...and Pink Panter one is phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteMy mother also used to bake fun cakes....I had a Barbie one a few times...and also a few of them shaped like animals...but none of them resembled cartoons...at least as far as I can remember.
sweet dreams!
Your mother made these cakes? Holy cow! What a talent! I remember having cakes that had a naked Barbie doll in the center with a dress made of cake and icing. So tacky. So wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThey are gorgeous. I'm so sorry I don't have pictures of my old birthday cakes. All of them are in a cupboard stored somewhere in my mother's house.
ReplyDeleteWhoo these pictures are great :) I use to love the Care Bears lol
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing! Your mum is so talented and creative. I had personalised cakes each year and they were wonderful, we were very fortunate!x
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness, these cakes are amazing!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you tracked down the Carebear episode)
Your Mum is a baking LEGEND. Get that woman on Bake Off STAT. But please ask her to quote for my future unicorn-themed wedding cake first; I won't be able to afford her once she's famous xx
