Hug and Tugs- the one that got away

What was the iconic toy that was around when you were a little girl or boy?

For me, as a child born at the start of the 80's (almost), my toy was the Carebears.  I adored them.  For anyone who doesn't know what they are, they were a set of bears who all had a logo on their tummy which was their special power. Each one had their own colour.  For example, Cheer bear was pink and had a rainbow on this tummy.  Funshine bear was yellow with a sun on his tummy and Tender heart was Brown with red heart on his tummy. If the carebears had to deal with something difficult or bad, they all got together and did the 'Carebear Stare' which made their magical powers in their tummy work and they turned things good.

I loved my Care bears, I remember the Christmas when I was about 5 receiving a large soft-toy 'Tender Heart bear'. He came in a sort of cardboard box that looked a bit like a seat and I distinctly remember that Christmas, at my Grandma and Grandpa's house, sitting watching TV, sitting in that box as a chair.  I also had a cuddly Cheer bear who was smaller and a family friend gave me a MUCH beloved present of one of the Care bear cousin babies who was mint-coloured and it was so cute, I loved it.

I also had the small hard-toys too in most of the original care bears.

My Mum even made me a Cheer bear cake for one birthday. One day, I will share some of the cakes my Mum made. We were the Jane Asher era of cake-making.

I was bought a video of the Carebears one birthday which was the first feature film which I watched many happy times. I'd love to see it again. I wonder if it is on Youtube?

Then, one birthday, I was bought a video of a carebear episode where two of the Carebear babies, Hugs and Tugs were kidnapped. I loved it but the tracking on the video was off so my Mum went to take it back for one with better tracking.  The subsequent few replacements were all plagued with the same problem.  I remember, anxiously waiting when my Mum came home each time, wanting to find out what happened to Hugs and Tugs.   Finally, the last time she came home, she came home with TOP CAT. She had said they had said that all of them were faulty and there were no more so she had to get something else. I enjoyed Top Cat but I always longed to see that video for years and years.

Did you have an iconic toy or a sense of losing something you wanted as a child.

Incidentally, if you wonder what prompted this post, Gemma, Pinkhaired Princess posted two 'The Shoegirl styles...' posts, here and here with Carebear clothing items and it brought it all back to me.

  1. That was the first film I ever saw. Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake (what kids would refer to as a 'short' these days). I've watched some of the modern CB episodes on Tiny Pop, they are pretty cute, though I prefer that old vintage look. I think that's why the Iron Fist collection is so exciting because it's the older style and even the My Little Pony stuff was the old face ponies. Thanks for the mention x x x x

  2. I remember the Care Bear when i was teaching Ceramics. We had Care Bear Decals which customers were wild about for firing on plates and mugs and such. My kids were young then and watched Care Bear cartoons on TV.
That was a very long time ago. They were the sweetest thing and I can understand the attraction for kids.

When I was a kids, there were no media hype about toys. They were pretty basic dolls. I remember my dolls were made of rigid plastic and resembled the barbie doll somewhat but the hair were glued on and we couldn't comb them. No bendable limbs or head but it meant the world to me except I wanted a blonde and always got a brunette. lol.

I hope that you're having a great weekend despite all the terrible horrors happening in Paris, not that far away from the UK.

    Hugs,

  3. So the Carebears were sort of like the Avengers then. I had no idea. My fondest memories, my few memories, of my youth were Christmas mornings at my grandparents. Nowhere else did I ever feel so much like a child, so at peace and loved. My toys were all boy toys of course. My Death Star playset was probably my favorite. It was 3 stories tall and had a big laser cannon. I used to have endless fun with my action figures. All sorts of stories and adventures. And if I tell you I still do from time to time I doubt you will judge. Sending you a carebear stare in advance of your next tights post :)

  4. I confess to knowing very little about Care Bears, I was too old to be aware of toy trends by the time they came out! I think my favourite toys when I was little were my dolls. I had a Sindy for my 3rd birthday, and loved her dearly, she was wearing the iconic Weekenders outfit, a red, white and blue striped top and jeans. I also remember her skating outfit, and a dog-walking look, a tweed skirt, suede jacket and a little dog, complete with a bowl and a bone! Wish I still had them, they are real 1960s treasure (and of course very collectable now). xxx

  5. I loved the Care Bears too! I had a few of the little plastic toys but I didn't get a soft toy, I remember entering a competition to win a Tender Heart Bear, I sent off so many entries and was absolutely certain I'd win!
I collected the Panini stickers too, I nearly had the whole lot until my 'best' friend told em they were childish and made me feel silly (she could be so unkind). I found one in a book a few months ago that I was using as a bookmark - it gave me such a jolt of nostalgia!

  7. I used to like the care bears too - I had one soft toy but I can't remember which one now, I think it was blue. I had a couple of videos too. There are so many iconic toys from the 80s - I always think of Major Morgan when I think of the 80s!

Have you ever seen 'We didn't own an Ipad?' - to the them of Billy Joel's we didn't start the fire? It's brilliant. I think you'd like it!

  8. I love this story and I hope you find a clean run of that movie! I don't know the Care Bears, except for the name. I always wanted a Lite Brite and an Easy Bake Oven. For the Easy Bake I improvised with our slide projector, which had a really hot bulb - with interesting results. I made inedible peanut butter pudding. haha.

  9. I didn't now about Carebear, but I remember losing some things, yes, and that is a bad sensation, I know... sorry about a short comment, dear Kezzie, because of the last events in Paris... I read your post, I know you know that, but I am sure that you must be thinking of that as well... I can't stop thinking of Paris :( I hope you have a good Sunday, dear Kezzie!

  10. I assume you've seen it now? If not, a quick Google tells me that the episode is called "Care A Lot's Birthday", and can be found on YouTube...

  11. Carebears got popular here a bit later on so I didn't watch them as a kid, but my nephew loves to watch them....very sweet cartoon it is. I can imagine how it was like, not knowing what happened...that happened to me twice when our national TV would stop in the middle of a series because they suddenly decided that the rest would be too costly or what not...and in those days, we couldn't just order something online or track it on youtube....I remember how horrible it is, getting into a story and not knowing how it will end.

  12. We only had one Carebear video. My sister and I weren't really that into Carebears. Postman Pat was my favourite.

I wanted a Mr Frosty for years and years but I was never allowed. I hear they were disappointing though, so maybe it's for the best ;-) As for a sense of loss, when my brother accidentally taped over The BFG I was devastated! I recently bought the film on DVD but haven't watched it yet - I hope it's as good as I remember!

  13. Too old for the Care Bears although I do remember them.
I loved my Sindy and Pippa dolls and when I was younger my Tiny Tears doll too.
