BEDM Day 2: Adventure: Into Swallowship...

Adventures can be as big or small as you want them to be.  If you are a thrill seeker, your adventure will be much overt and extreme than mine. If you have a life full of difficulties, the adventure can be escaping briefly from those. And for those of us in the middle, an adventure is doing something different from the norm, trying something different, visiting somewhere new.  An adventure implies something new!

Well, I always regard any walk as exciting, especially when that walk involves woods or forest- who knows what kind of creatures or magical beings you may encounter. Or finding a new and exciting species of tree, animal or plant.

Let me take you on an adventure...

In the Easter holidays, on Easter Sunday and Monday, I took two walks respectively with my Brother-in-law and then my husband into Swallowship woods above Hexham. Above, since you have to climb the hill to reach them.

There is something awe-inspiring about being surrounded by ancient trees, overlookers over decades and centuries. Who knows what they have seen and what has changed whilst they grow there quietly and wisely.

There is an eloquent quietude which I find unique to the woods.  There is a sense that you are allowed to enter this place of venerable wisdom, rather like entering a library.   And yet, when you raise your voice to utter a word, the trees acquiesce to the request.  The delight of discovering something unusual, the glee at the discovery of a hidden den, an abandoned camp site, the grand mound of an long-established ant colony.

Who built it? When? Where are they now?

IMG_2198

The sight of babbling brook and stones guiding you across.

IMG_2212

One step...

IMG_2218

Two steps...

IMG_2215

We come to a brief end, a blanket of green stretches away from the forest boundaries but not today, thank you.

IMG_2214

The path descends.  Something is arriving...

IMG_2231

Ah, the sight of a glistening river! Find a path downwards, post haste.

IMG_2233

Calm, quiet.

IMG_2247

Places to climb and explore.

IMG_2239

Sites to sigh over and long for warm summers to bathe in.

And by the river, the unexpected detritus left by a previous visitor.  Which book does it come from?

IMG_2240

Rest a while at the make-shift fire place left by the previous intrepid.

Forest of Adventure

The sight of a fearless squirrel, scampering over tree bridges.

And finally, as the sun sets, to look forward and back, wondering how to get home safely.

Forest of adventure 3
Ah, the woods is a great place for adventure.

  2. Northumberland is an area I have never visited, (probably because I can't drive!!!!!), but I've seen so many stunning pictures and I would love to do the tourist thing of visiting Alnwick Castle; it looks a real treat.
I love walks/days out in the countryside; picnics with my parents paved the way for that! Ashdown Forest was close and your photos remind me of many happy hours spent there. Oh, and holidays spent in the New Forest too. Yeah, many an adventure was had!

  3. It looks like a well travelled path. I'm so tired this evening that i'm glad it's you on this walk. I'm glad to sit at the computer. The roof is done and now I have to clean pieces of roofing from my flower beds.
    Have a lovely weekend.
    Hugs,

  5. My type of adventure for certain. No more fighting gangs of Nazi biker thugs for me, it is all about the peaceful hike. A fella can only land the Space Shuttle a couple times before that becomes ho hum. Bring on the stream and tree varmints :) Lovely shots dear! xo

  12. You're right that "adventure" depends on the individual. In some ways, I'm a risk-taker; in others, I'm a wimp. Walking in nature, as you demonstrate, is always a delight. Visual beauty and natural wildlife. That's where we came from!

  13. I agree with you! Adventures can be calm or not! They are great anyway! I loved your adventure and woods, the pictures are amazing! They do transmit that quietness, it's great! Creeks, ponds, lakes, so good to be able to see them around, and so many nice trees! I loved your top and cardi, by the way, the colors are perfect (I love red! and together with the baby blue, even better!)

  14. Swallowship Woods is a name that captures the imagination and it does seem a place just right for 'an adventure' with a good companion. Love the stepping stones and the great fallen tree branch is rather amazing. Great photos especially the last with the burst of coloured light from the sun shining through the trees.

  16. I love spending time in nature...it always makes me feel better. This place is lovely...the forest looks absolutely magical, I wish I could visit. ( so nice to hear you enjoyed Split and stayed near Bačvice...I don't live in Split all the time anymore, but whenever I'm here, like right now, I enjoy it immensely).

Anyhow, I really like how feminine is this outfit...very chic outdoors combo!
