Treasure Island

It's amazing JUST how many classics I HAVEN'T read! I have read quite a few but there is a large backlog I must address. At Music Camp, I had finished all of the 3 books I had taken to read there, so I found Treasure Island on the communual bookshelves.  As classics go, it is quite short so it is more approachable and is definitely the quintessential swashbuckling adventure. My only real experience of it had been a short extract from Muppets' treasure Island so I had no real expectations besides the fact that Long John Silver was the baddie. And yet, though he was infamous and the initial protagonist of all the trouble, he was not actually the baddie I had thought he'd be- a gentleman and very intelligent. The book is exciting and there's always anticipation over what would happen next.  The opening section which sets the scene was intriguing and interesting- I liked Jim and our other heroes in the book- the Squire and the Doctor.  The other baddies, besides LJS were suitably evil and without morals- more 2D, but that didn't detract from the enjoyment of the book.
I think I enjoyed it all the more because when I was in reception this past term (summer 2), their topic was 'Pirates' so I had been immersed in this and enjoyed the displays and ingenious ways they took to approach this topic with the children.

Well worth giving a go if you fancy a classic but not a weighty tome!

  1. This is one of the few classics that I actually bothered reading when I was younger and I really enjoyed it! Easy to read and I found the story pretty griping. Though I feel exactly the same in that there are waaay too many classics that I've not got round to reading so I started Little Women recently. Rather enjoyable it is too :)

  2. Yes Kezzie. I am aware about the two separate shoes. lol I did that with a post about in May, where I couldn't decide which shoes looked better with my crazy dress and bald head. So in the last shot I wore one of each. And when I posted today's, I have on those shoes in the main pictures of me (full length) so I tossed that pic on at the end, again in this post.

Yes! NO MORE CHEMO! And, ...it feels like I never ever had it either. So odd but true! ♥, Renae

  3. I like Treasure Island. You've made me want to re-read it (as if my 'to read' pile isn't big enough!). Have you read Robinson Crusoe? I mix the two books up in my head!
There are loads of classics I haven't read too, it's a long list, even though I have read a lot. I have a quite a few waiting to be read on my shelf, but some of them are quite thick and that puts me off - or makes me think 'I'll save that for the summer hols' - but the holidays come and go and I always seem to be too busy for big books!

By the way, Dave sent me a link the other day which made me think of you - you can add another dimension to your cloudy posts if you could draw on them!

  6. I feel the same about reading classics and it's nice to hear this one isn't too heavy either. I'd definitely be up for giving this one a go and the cover is very sweet too. I would love to see your polka dot dress.

  7. I did a comprehension exercise with 3]three 10 yr old boys last spring, using the beginning of chapter one of Treasure Island. They LOVED it, wanted to read more. But is the book in the school library? or the village library? NO!!! Who decided to chuck out all the classics from these repositories of literature?

  8. I have never read this either. There is a casino in Minnesota called Treasure Island, so as a kid, I was surprised that this was a book! heehee

  9. Although I love reading I've read very few of the "classics" - both children's classics like Black Beauty and Treasure Island, and adult ones like Austen. The only two are Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" and also "Villette"...other than those I think I'm a bit of a pleb!!

  14. Oh ha ha ha! Muppets Treasure Island was a huge disappointment for me! Anything Muppets not created by Jim Henson truly is! I shall not be reading this book nor shall I venture to watch the Muppets version again, but you really gave me a chuckle hence this comment! <3
