Recreating the catalogue outfit

I thought I'd share an outfit today. I've worn lots of outfits that I like and would like to photograph to share but most of the time, I just can't be bothered to faff around with a tripod and bad light- I'm so much better at this in the Summer!

This outfit is based on one which I created about 14 years ago or so.

Most of my clothes for most of my life have been bought second hand or in the sale.  But, a year or so after I started my first full time permanent job at the Royal Academy of Music, I came across a White Stuff catalogue. Oh, how I loved that catalogue! The outfits the models wore were SO my type of thing, so pretty, little details and cosy (and the models were the type of aesthetic I like- girl next door, brown hair, cutesy). I pored over that catalogue for weeks.  One day, I decided that I really liked a few things so much that for once, I would actually order something online (I was fairly new to online buying then- the occasional eBay purchase) and there was one outfit which I ended up ordering 4 elements from. I didn't order the skirt or the knee-high boots as I had something that would work for that already.

This white top, button up lilac tank top, brown heart patterned knee high socks, tights with  a circle pattern and then I ended up also ordering a knitted dress with a hood and heart elbow patches.

I was horrified as the order ended up buying about £150 but for the first time in my life, I had some money (I saved every month, paid my tithe, paid back student loan). I was SO excited for when it arrived- it was such a pretty parcel.  All the labels were really cutesy with a scalloped tag, pretty button embellishments on the tag, pink cotton thread attached with a little round safety pin. I loved all the little details.

The weird thing is, I have not recreated that first outfit based on the catalogue for about 10 years.
Last Saturday, I decided to.
I wore that same top, the knitted button down tank (I wish I had a close up as the buttons are all different colours and shapes and the top has pretty applique leaves at various places.
I wore those same knee high socks but instead, this time, I wore a charity-shopped black velvet skirt (the original outfit had a corduroy button down skirt) and black charity shopped leather Ugg buckle boots and then black thick leggings instead of tights.

The original look had a long beaded necklace (with thread between beads) but this time, I wore my silver bee necklace and some cute earrings from Lorelai LQ made out of recycled single-use straws.
As a last minute thought, I found this lilac beret which I had forgotten about which was charity shopped a few years ago.  When we went out to go to the zerowaste shop, I lost the beret as it flew off my head and ended up getting muddy but at least I relocated it!

I will never forget that first order and how exciting it was to buy NEW things that cost money when I was new to working full time not alongside study (I'd worked since I was 14 but alongside study)

  1. I can remember going a bit crazy with my first pay packets, although most of my purchases were second-hand books, as I was determined to start a library of my own. But shoes too! I remember not being able to choose between two pairs and buying them both. Such extravagance!
I can see why you were drawn to the White Stuff label, and I'm loving the outfit you recreated. What a relief that you were able to retrieve that lovely beret! xxx

    1. Ah, I was buying books in charity shops as well. I used to love going to town at the weekend and buying 20p books! Usually Agatha Christie!

  2. You are lucky that the top still fits you after 10 years.
I was also proud of having some spending money on my first job. Instead of buying clothes for myself, I bought my mom a winter coat which she needed.

That beret reminds me of a pull over sweater cashmere blue sweater I once worn in 1984 in a fashion show at our church women group fund raiser. I love the soft fuzziness and it felt so luxurious.

I modelled a number of beautiful classy outfits and my husband ended up buying every pieces I modelled at a cost of around $1000. Back then it was a lot of money for us. Not that we could afford it but he thought it was worth it. I wore those outfits for a long time. I still have the newspaper clippings of the event.

What about the cheese thief. Did you forget to mention about him. Did he buy you another goat cheese?

    Hugs, Julia

    1. Ah, you shame me. I wish I, too, had bought my mum something lovely with my first paycheck now. I did pay her quarter of my first paycheck as rent but sadly didn't buy her a present.

Wasn't that lovely of your husband! So nice of him. That's so sweet that he bought them for you. You must have looked lovely. I'd love to see that newspaper clipping!

Ah, actually, originally, the cheese thief post and this one were all in one but I decided that the post was too long so I split them into two but forgot to change the title!
I did forgive him. No, he hasn't bought me another goat's cheese but we haven't needed to go to the supermarket. It's ok, we have other cheese and I made some lovely carrots and lentil soup.

    2. It's nice of you to forgive him for his weakness. You may be able to bribe him with goat cheese next time you want him to do something nice for you, lol.

  3. Oh! You have a bee necklace :-) My sister-in-law gave me matching bee earrings and necklace recently, which I love. And I have my cute bee brooch... where is that, I wonder... maybe still on the coat I was wearing two years ago???

    1. Ah, I love bee things too! I will have to share my 40th birthday present (which was also my Christmas present hence why I have it already) which I am sure you will like.

  5. You certainly spent that first pay cheque wisely, Kezzie, considering you've still got the top. That beret is gorgeous and really suits you! xxx

  6. That's a really cute outfit - I love the matching beret! although it seems to be a renegade!

Saving up and spending your hard-earned cash on something new is a real treat, isn't it?
