Never will you find a post on this blog extolling the virtues of the taste of mushrooms. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that I firmly detest mushrooms.
However, seeing them in the wild is always a fascinating experience.
In our recent trip to Northumberland, we saw a few examples as we were out and about. I thought I'd share my pictures.
By the way, go over and check out Sophie's interesting and great photographic Fungi post! Her photos are excellent and she knows what they are called. Plus, her descriptive skills are excellent and witty!
It really did remind me of a burger bun with a little tutu nestled beneath.
I very gingerly pulled back the grass to get a better look, hoping I hadn't touched it at all! I really am scared of mushrooms!
I saw this holey-looking fellow in the woods- it looks rather like a rudimentary animal skull!
I cannot deny that this large flat mushroom reminds me of those dried banana pieces you get in Health food shops.
Alas, this picture-book toadstool had been rather attacked. It still made an interesting picture though.
The frilly side.
This one was a little more intact though still seemed to have served as a tasty morsel for some creature or other.
Have you seen any Fungi in your travels?
xx
The red mushroom. I think should have a pixie or fairy sitting on the top - sorry just being silly.....

I've seen a little bit of fly agaric and various 'brown ones' - the one with the purple/red top is, I think, Russula atropurpurea - or purple brittlegill, but I could be wrong, there are so many mushrooms!
ReplyDeleteThe red one is beautiful and delicate. I like that a lot.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, that red mushroom sure stands out in the green grass but doesn't look edible.
ReplyDeleteI love button mushrooms sauteed in butter with steak, in baked Brie cheese, and in many other dishes. Of course, I buy the mushrooms from the store so I know they are edible.
Hugs, Julia
I love Sophie's posts - they are always so lovely and she captures the light so well.

I think most of them wouldn't be edible anyway, but don't they look fantastic? Getting to see mushrooms in the wild is worth having Autumn for! xxx
ReplyDeleteWild mushrooms are pretty in their natural diversity. I'd never risk eating them due to the possibility of being poisonous but they're fun to look at. Nice post.
ReplyDeleteThat first one is really beautiful. Such colors for a fungus! Yes, we have many mushrooms on our farm, especially at times like now after so much rain. We have some pretty, oval white ones back in the garden that I haven't seen before.
ReplyDeleteThanks ever so much for the lovely mention! I enjoyed your pictures. What a cracker of a red beauty! I am yet to find one this season.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't been out walking for a while so I haven't seen any yet.
ReplyDeleteLove that first photo, fungi fabulouslessness!

Kezzie, I'm trying to paint your pretty mushroom today! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely to see mushrooms in the wild.
ReplyDeleteI liked your photographs.
All the best Jan
wonderful mushrooms.
ReplyDeleteMushrooms always remind me of my childhood, there where always loads in the woodlands near our house. I don't see them much anymore - probably because I don't really hang around in woods much these days.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos
