Wow, my last post on 5 girl things I cannot be bothered with was rather popular! I adored all the comments you lot left, making me feel SO MUCH BETTER that I am not alone in my ennui regarding such beautifying pursuits! I read this book set in New York and I cannot believe the suffering people go through in the name of 'beauty'/
The comments prompted me to consider other beauty/sartorial rituals and choices that I don't and DO do.
1. Moisturising my body:
Moisturising my face-yes!. I have done this pretty much consistently since I was was a teenager. Don't ask me why, but I have done. I think it is because the face is small and can be moisturised whilst reading/holding a book in the other hand. Body moisturising, on the other hand, is an entirely different kettle of fish. It takes soooooooooooooooooo long!!! I have terribly dry skin and CBC despairs of me constantly scratching when I get into bed , (the middle bit of back where underwear catches rub is my constant nemesis. CBC came into the bedroom the other night where I was standing looking in the mirror whilst simultaneously attempting to reach the middle of my back with a hairbrush to relieve a particularly vexing itch and just told me I was weird. The trouble is, I have two lumpy moles on my back which I am scared I will scratch off in my itching frenzy, so I need to be careful! Hmmm, I got right off the subject of Body moisturising didn't I?! Tangental deviations, be gone! Yes, so I DO occasionally moisturise my body, well, maybe my legs and a bit of arm and feet, but it generally occurs on a lazy Saturday morning every so often.
2. Skyscraper heels:
My lovely friend Charlene from church was the ultimate fashionista- she worked in fashion and she just, wonderfully, rarely, happened to have the same size 8 feet as me. She used to wear shoes of such terrifying heights that I wondered how she remained upright. They looked very elegant and her calves looked like they were made of marble. But the one time I tried to try some on, I physically could not get my foot at the necessary angle to get the foot in the shoe. Nope, I lost my balance and when I finally grasped a nearby iron radiator for dear life, promptly got cramp in the heel of my foot from the effort of trying to thrust my foot into said shoe. No, high heels are not for me, I am afraid. I would be likely to topple like a building, post-wrecking ball.
3. Foundation.
Confession....I wonder if I look at things properly. I worry that I wouldn't be able to tell if this were streaky or I'd missed any patches. I do look at some of my flawless colleagues (some... most of us can't be bothered!) and the immaculate Essex-ladies on the train in the mornings and think how smooth and lovely they look but I barely manage to haul myself out of bed, shower and put my clothes on and make the train in time, let alone do makeup. Some of the ladies sit and do makeup on the train but I would rather read my book, drink tea if I am lucky enough to have run to the kitchen and made a quick cup AND picked it up and eat a snack. Also, invariably, I am a sweating wreck by the time I get to the station. I imagine foundation would slide off my skin, I would wipe my face and be all smeared. Now, if I am going out somewhere, have got time AND have managed to locate my makeup bits and pieces, I will put on Yves St Laurent Touche Eclat Concealer on the bags of doom under my eyes. I might also put on some really ancient Eye liner or some sparkly Urban Decay eye shadow but that's it. Sorry Foundation- I am sure you are amazing, but I am scared of you and lacking time! Plus, I don't want the Joanna Lumley effect where when people see you WITHOUT your makeup, they think you look horrendously ill! I'd much prefer to look better for a special occasion!
4. Mascara
I used to wear this as a teenager for parties. But I have really weird eye-lashes. My good-eye, the one I can see out of, when you put mascara on (if I can get it on without blinking and spreading it all over my face), the eye-lashes are all obedient and stick upwards most prettily. But my bad eye, the one which I can't see out of? Those eye-lashes are bizarre- I do (or rather DID, haven't done it for years!) exactly the same manoeuvre as on my good-eye and then the eye-lashes stick downwards. I tried curlers to no avail. So, I won't bother. It ends up falling off under my eyes anyway and it makes my eyes water.
5. Fake tan
I like being pale and interesting. Pale says to me, I care about not getting skin cancer. I don't mind being pale (although I do tan naturally). There are many orange people in the towns around where I live and on the trains into work. I went to school with orange people. I don't want to be one of them!
6. Looking smart for a long haul flight.
I get the whole, Try for a free upgrade by looking smart. But inevitably, I want to be comfy, slobbing around in loose clothing that won't make me sweat! Loose trousers and saggy vest top it is!
Disclaimer. This is all about ME. If you do any of the above and enjoy it, good for you! I won't judge anyone and I admire the people who can manage their time and look good whilst getting everything they need to get done. However, I am not that girl. I am chaotic, last-minute, a bit lazy and would rather read my book or snooze for a bit longer than do any of these rituals!
What about you? How are you on these 'girl things?'
xx
Oh dear, I could have written this! I never moisturise anything other than my face, could never walk in high heels and medium ones had to be secured to my feet so I didn't step straight out of them, I go makeup free now I no longer work in an office and mascara irritates my eyes, and forget fake tan on non moisturised skin, all fake tans make me look like I have been dipped in ronseal anyway!
ReplyDeleteHow funny! Since you live in a moist climate you can get away without moisturizing your skin. Living in the high country (Denver) with dry air, my skin would fall off if I didn't use lotion.
ReplyDeleteTall shoes. Boo! I hate big girl shoes.
I didn't know you can only see out of one eye, Kezzie.
I am very pale skinned but fake tan is not for me, I know I'd end up orange and stripey. I don't tend to bother with make up but when I do I always re member why I stopped - stingy and claggy.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm with you on (nearly) all of it, but here is a word from an increasingly old woman- moisturise now! I very much regret not getting into a better habit before it was as necessary as it seems to be becoming. Look after your hands!
ReplyDeleteI only moisturize my face in winter because of dry skin. Even my feet dries out in winter. I don't usually wear moisturizer in summer .
ReplyDeleteHigh are not for me although I wore then when i was younger. I realized that they were expensive instruments of torture. Mind you, they make excellent self defense weapons.
Foundation is not for me either. I can't stand it on my face.
I used to wear mascara but I'm always rushed when going out and I probably don't really need it. I'm happy with the short lashes God gave me...
No fake tan for me either as I'm dark enough from working in the sun.
I love comfy clothes but I still like my clothes to be classic and good quality.
I don't always have classic clothes but that's what I prefer.
You never mentioned lipstick, lol... I rarely wear any either. Only on rare occasions.
We are not all that much different on the the beauty side of things. You like vintage and I like classic.
This has been fun.
You only can see from one eye? I would have never known.
Smiles and hugs.
Julia
As with the other post about girly things, I can't agree with you on most aspects. I hate fake tan or any kind of tan, pale is best and I wish my skin was actually pale and not just white.
ReplyDeleteI don't moisturize my body, except hands and feet, but I don't need it. I also use eye cream, lip balm and two face creams daily. It might not seem important in our 20s and 30s, but it will make a difference a bit later in life.
I can't wear flats and I can't understand how anybody can. I feel like they are slipping away from my feet and I don't like how they look. Trainers or high heels for me.
I use foundation and I've been using it since I was a teenager, I can't imagine wearing makeup without foundation or mascara. I don't use make up daily though, as I work from home and I don't see the need for it.
Snap! All of these! I can hardly wear any heels, and I have to have enclosed shoes too because of orthpaedic inner soles. No strappy sandals or flip flops for me. I occasionally moisturise my face (but it's very hit and miss) but I do oil my feel regularly as they are SO dry (Have you tried oil on the very dry bits of you?)
ReplyDeleteI'm the opposite on moisturise ... for more years than I care to think about I have a daily moisturise routine. Yes, it takes a few moments longer but it's something I've always done and now in my 60's my skin doesn't look too bad ... and people do remark on it!
ReplyDeleteI don't use an expensive moisturiser either ...
All the best Jan
I went back to your earlier post and commented there; my view continues with this one. "Beauty" today should be optional for girls, not expected. We don't see men wearing makeup or taking an hour to "get ready" to go out.
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone dear Kezzie.
ReplyDeleteI didn't moisturise my face until I was forty! I tried but it just brought me out in spots as my skin was oily. Now I slap in on morning and night but I fear it might be too late! I do use mascara, foundation applied lightly (on work days) and self tan in summer but not that awful orange muck. I hardly ever moisturise my body, (hangs head in shame) arms and legs in summer...sometimes.
I can't do vertiginous heels any more as I said in my latest post and long haul flights need comfy gear in my opinion. xx
I'm afraid I am guilty of a couple of the girly things you are mentioning here. I do moisturize my body (although not religiously, and the legs tend to get forgotten in winter), use mascara (took me ages to find one I like) and a light foundation. No fake tan though, I always end up looking like an orange zebra! xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm OK at moisturising my body but I'm so pale that fake tan and foundation are just not on my radar at all - I just end up looking orange!

I enjoy being pale too! I am always disappointed when I end up with a bit of a tan during summer, haha.
ReplyDeleteI do wear makeup every day, but only because I can put it all on in under 5 minutes. That's definitely something I don't like to spend a lot of time on.
I attempt to wear heels every now and then but can't make a habit of it. I like to have the option of sprinting around if I so choose.. Heels make me feel slow and trapped.
I've enjoyed both of these posts and we're very similar. I just can't be bothered with all that faffing! I do moisturise my face and heels and occasionally wear mascara but I've never been a girly girl. As for self tan, never. I'm naturally pale-skinned and freckly and burn easily so make sure to use lots of sun cream. Once, at the end of a week's holiday in Zakynthos, someone asked if I'd just arrived as I was still so pale! x
ReplyDeleteBody moisturising? Ugh so boring. But this doesn’t stop me buying lovely smelling body lotion that sits around for ages unused. My most successful bout of body moisturising is when I use baby oil standing in my shower, a quick wipe all over and it’s done - the water helps to spread it around and you can pat yourself dry and be done… but only in the summer it’s too bloomin’ cold in the winter to be standing around wet and undressed.
ReplyDeleteHeels I can do but they can get uncomfortable, so these days I prefer flats and the knowledge that I won’t be in pain by the end of the day. Finding a truly comfortable pair of heels is a real challenge.
I hate foundation but I do use a BB cream to hide imperfections, it seems so much easier to use. Mascara on the other hand is my constant companion. I love the difference it makes to my whole face (and to how I feel if I’m honest).
Fake tan? Nope. I’ve had too many disasters in my early 20s to bother any more. I might dabble with a gradual tan but it’s very rare.
I don’t believe I’d be lucky enough to be upgraded on a flight so I always go for comfort.
I can not believe the lengths that some people feel are necessary to go to for ‘beauty’, if they want to that’s fine but it seems to have gone way beyond ridiculous these days. On Pinterest I keep seeing things to lighten your underarms. What’s that all about…? And sadly it doesn’t end there. I’d hate to be a young girl these days, the pressure seems immense.
I love heels but never wear them for long. Not good at putting fake tan on and I always forget to moisturise my body too :)x
ReplyDeleteAnd now I'll have to go back to read the first lot of these as this is so lovely and entertaining Kezzie. I'm a midway kinda creature. I do moisturise my body, but that's a recent thing and mostly due to a)age and b)my skin turning into papery thin snakeskin which is probably due to a) and also the fact that I throw myself with abandon into the salty old sea every day.
ReplyDeleteNow sky scraper heels. Erm, well I do wear these for work and mainly for photoshoots but that's because I feel quite short and dumpy otherwise. Heck they do hurt and I often change out of them at lunchtime in a kind of "I don't give a damn" huff.
Foundation. Well, again I do wear it, but only since old age has set in, bringing wrinkles and blotches that may be classed as age spots. I can however recommend a brilliant product that's a mineral powder which covers quickly and magically makes me look miles better without being shiny and a mask-like.
Mascara. Ditto, as old age means your eyes sink further into your sockets and all people can see are wrinkles, so mascara is a necessary evil.
Fake tan. I'm not averse to a bit of Dove every day something or other that doesn't make me orange, but helps me not look grey/blue which is my default setting.
Looking smart for a long haul flight is nothing short of impossible, but mainly just ridiculous!
Too tired now to visit the other version of this, but I promise to return soon.
Much love
Anna xxxx
I go through phases of using body lotion because I keep being given it and feel like I should use it up! It's such a hassle though so I usually forget about it again after about 2 days ;-)
