What I would wear for a country walk

I always fail in the stakes to wear something pretty I can photograph in a pretty location when I go for walks. I see fellow bloggers who walk in wonderful ensembles that are somehow practical* yet stylish and fun. I don't seem to be able to do that. I guess, for me, that is a secondary factor. The main reason I want to go is to walk! Anything else is incidental.  Thus, you won't really find me wearing anything particularly note-worthy when I walk. I have to wear something that I don't mind getting muddy since I am clumsy and am inclined to slip in mud or splodge with mud-spray as I wend my way along. It's a bonus if it is ever remotely stylish!

Walking in the South Tyne trail on a fairly sunny, but still early Spring day, here's one example of what I might wear.

1.  Loose-fitting ideally. I don't like the thought of sweating in something tight!
2. Layers- my coat and cardigan go on and off like a yo-yo depending on the gradient of the walk.

3.  Ideally a light cardigan so if it is warm, I still have protection from sunburn on my shoulders.  Nothing thick or woolly for me- I get too hot too easily, even in the winter.

4.  Hat. Always a hat. There is never a time I regret not taking a hat on a walk. In the summer, a straw hat- light but sun-protection but well-fitting enough not to float from my head on a high-up ridge walk. Winter, a beret that can go over my ears or a warmer hat like a beanie or deerstalker.

5.  Walking boots/shoes- as aforementioned, I am clumsy. The last time I went walking in trainers on the Cat's Back in Herefordshire, I slipped down 5 times and ended up covered in mud. No matter what, I need to wear walking boots/shoes. Occasionally I have worn wellies but I can't feel totally comfortable, secure or confident in them, not enough control!

6.  Usually trousers- fairly light-weight sun protection.  I usually wear a pair of light cotton flares from French Connection I found in a charity shop. Totally unglamorous but light and substantial at the same time and roll-upable and easy to wash. Can't stand the feeling of tight-trousers either!
7. SOMETHING slightly colourful and quirky so I don't feel TOO like an extra from the Cotswolds Outdoors catalogue. In this case- navy and red polka-dot top (loose-fitting and thin)  and a reversible polka dot scarf.  Everything in this outfit except the walking shoes (from Mountain Warehouse) and beret (hand-crocheted by Mum) was from a charity shop. I don't own PROPER walking clothing- you know, the kind bought in Milletts/Blacks.
8. Bank card, £5, camera, phone and hand sanitizer- for emergencies. We forgot water- doh!

9.  A coat of some sort. In the winter, it has to be waterproof. No way am I wearing a glamorous coat out in the country. In the summer, I keep a light mac in my bag but I WOULD like a waterproof one as opposed to my showerproof one. Still not got one as being fussy as would love a slightly pretty or fun one whilst being practical. Seasalt Cornwall is still in my steely-glaz.
10.  A good sense of humour.  I was a grumpy cow for part of a lovely walk with CBC last week and it doesn't help make the walk enjoyable and light and free.  In the picture though, though I look unimpressed, I was having a fun light-heated time with CBC and WOMOMTM!

What are your criteria for a good walking outfit?

*Ok, so occasionally, they aren't totally practical...

  1. Your walking outfit looks just fine to me. You wear what makes you comfortable and that's about it... Now everyone are pretty much individualists and are not too bothered by what people thinks of what they wear.

I wear mostly charity shop clothing myself except undies and footwear. Undies for obvious reasons and since I have big bunions, I need comfortable wide footwear to walk pain free.

For walking I prefer light breathable walking shoes and layered clothing according to the weather. I'm not one to wear hats unless it's raining or it's too cold. I get too hot and sweaty in my face if I wear something on my head. I like to wear capri pants or short in the summer except when there are mosquitoes then I wear jeans.

    Have a nice week Kezzie.
    Hugs,
    JB

  2. I am with you. When I go for a hike or am working out, it is all about comfort and function. But I do like to throw in some color or a fun pattern. And I am opposite of you in that I like to wear tighter pants or running tights when I am hiking. Loose pants always feel like they are going to fall off. Ha! I like your walking look. Super cute and cozy!

  6. I am so with you on this! Most of my clothing is charity shopped and going out I wish I could float around in some beautiful ensemble, but practicalities and comfort come first. You do look stylish and comfy in your well thought through outfit, so I think you have achieved your aim xx

I love the last photo.....Why are you balancing that large boulder on your head?

  9. I can't imagine you being clumsy, really? Or grumpy! But if you say so :) Still, can't imagine! I loved your outfit and ideas - I will try a cardi for walking, in case I feel it got warmer. I loooove red, so the cardi is so nice, I love it, and the beanie as well! So sweet and beautiful you look! For walking, sometimes you can see my pictures on the blog... I look like a pauper, I think :) But comfort is a must! The funny thing is that around 2 or 3 years ago I walked wearing high heels. And suddenly it was impossible to accompany a friend of mine (she walks like an athlete) and I started wearing flats!

  10. Hats are great. The most important thing to me on walks is comfortable shoes.

  11. You look fabulous, all long lean lines and gorgeous colours! I don't really do many proper country walks, I'm more of a strolling on a path kinda gal, but footwear is always the most important consideration. xxx

  12. You look far classier than I manage on a walk. I'm usually wearing extremely unglamourous walking trousers or shorts, the kind that rustle like plastic with every step. Not sexy but nice and waterproof!

  13. This is a lovely bright but practical outfit. That last photo is classic! It's like you're saying 'WHAT are you doing???' but CBC is totally excited about balancing a stone on his head and trying to persuade you to join in! I haven't been out walking for years, but I always pretty much wore what I'd normally wear (not the highest highest heels obvi) but then my walks weren't hiking walks...I don't do dirt!

  14. You're walking outfit is great - colourful, practical and reflects your personality. So long as I have comfortable walking shoes I'm feel happy and confident when walking out. I like to change my scarf according to my mood and the weather as I have so many!

  15. Your outfit looks so practical and comfy, perfect for a walk.

I dream of the perfect outfit for walks, but on my last few walks in the forest I had high heels :)) They weren't planned walks, more like we've seen a path after we've been to a coffee shop or a National Trust property and said "let's go for a walk". I imagine people would say I'm crazy, but I'm quite steady on heels and I'm not bothered by what others think.

Hubby tried to convince me yesterday to show me a place he walked the dog in the forest while I was in stilettos :)) I didn't had time, that was the only reason I missed that. As I said, it's crazy :)

  18. Comfortable layers and nimble shoes with a hat! Loose for sure. I like to keep my arms and legs covered and protected from bugs, plants, scrapes from falls, and the sun. A pop of a bright color is always fun!

  19. I like your outfit in these photos -- loose, attractive, colorful. Good advice, esp. on wearing things that give sun-protection. So often I forget this, and opt for fewer clothes, exposed skin, and burns (or bug bites) -- and can't do anything about it b/c we are so far from home!
