Cat under the skirt

For some reason, when I have been to visit my Mum at her home in recent times, I always seem to be wearing a long skirt.

My long skirts seem to be a constant source of joy and fascination for her feline children.

Every single time I sit down, I immediately  have one or two squatters who set up camp under the canopy of the skirt. Which ever skirt it is.

In the early days, they used to try and leap up my legs but now, they just like sitting there.

Every little movement I make results in a little tickle up my leg
They have SUCH characters! They are the absolute best of friends but both unique.
Here's Rowan.  He plays fetch with a small ball and can leap around 2 foot in the air to catch!

Bramble, not pictured, chirrups away and is very intelligent. Her motor begins the moment you pick her up.

I'm so glad Mum has them. They bring her such joy, despite their naughty antics.
CBC loves to go and visit them too and he talks about going to see our fur cousins.

TARDIS Tuesday- Yaz Khan's outfit from The Power of the Doctor

 Hi there!

Hope you are well.

This week for TARDIS Tuesday, I thought I'd have a go at putting together Yaz Khan's final outfit from her final episode, The Power of the Doctor.

Let's have a look at it.

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/jodie-whittaker-faces-final-doctor-25333198

My insta pal @Zeiynacosplay was very clever and managed to identify both her jacket and her shirt/blouse from the very dark looking promo pictures available.  They are both from All Saints. Her jacket is a Balfern jacket (Yaz has another Balfern jacket but made from red leather)- this one is some sort of Canvas.
The blouse is a rich burgundy and black snake skin print.
She wears a tan/brown belt and either black/dark jeans.
At this stage, I am not sure what shoes she is wearing but I am taking a punt on either her Dune Pacey boots in Burgundy (which would go well with this) or her Doctor Martens Leonore boots in butterscotch.

She wears her trademark small silver studs and her pair in French plaits.

Here is my version:

In terms of her jacket, I did debate buying a mustard-coloured jacket but I really do have so many jackets and I decided to use one I had any way.  I bought this caramel-coloured fake leather jacket from a charity shop in Ipswich with Sophie and Hazel around about 4-5 years ago.
I wore a pair of black pinstripe trousers (charity shopped) as they were the first ones I found on Sunday morning (I wore this on the day that the episode aired!) and added my Mum's brown leather belt.

I have no idea how Zeiyna managed to identify the shirt but she was spot on with it.  To be fair, I did think it might be from All Saints!  I managed to find one second hand on eBay as I thought it looked really pretty.  All Saints RRP prices are ridiculous. This retailed at £110!!!
I was SO happy to find it was 100% cotton and beautifully soft.  It was wonderful puffed sleeves and ruched cuffs
She doesn't seem to be wearing any jewellry but I decided to wear my 40th birthday present of her Alex Monroe necklace. I tied my hair in rudimentary plaits- I don't have enough hands to do French braids/plaits!!

My final part of the outfit- I decided to wear my Dune Pacey boots which I FINALLY found in the screen accurate burgundy colour a couple of months ago!

Update:
Ah, this  was SUCH a wonderful episode!!!

Spoilers alert!!!!!

Last chance to look away!

It warmed my hearts to see the Classic Doctors making  an appearance as well as the wonderful inclusion of 5 old companions including William Russell who played Ian Chesterton  in the  very first episode!

I thought  the plot  was very clever and using the Regeneration energy of the Cybermen to get Jodie's Doctor back.
Lots of great acting and heartfelt moments  as well as laughs.
Sacha Dawan's Master was suitably evil and crazy and a great villain!

I did think Yaz leaving just like that was a bit abrupt and unexpected. I expected  something more dramatic!

Well done Chibnall, this was a great episode!

A sign of peace

Rainbows are so special! The excitement you see when one appears in the sky is a joy!

Last Saturday, CBC and I were in Billericay to go for dinner. He was driving in from a rehearsal and I had gone via train to have a quick peruse of the charity shopw. As I headed towards the restaurant, I got caught in rain.
I dipped into Poundland to escape the rain.
When I emerged, I saw a rainbow emerging across the sky.
As I walked down the High Street, the rainbow became more and more intense.

The wonderful thing was, all the people walking towards me had NO idea what beauty was behind them.
It was therefore up to me, to enlighten them.
To each and every person who came towards me, I said, "Have you seen the rainbow?"
And in each and every case, I had the glorious joy of seeing them turn round and gasp at how bright and intense it was.
Every single individual was overjoyed and stopped for a moment to gaze in awe and smile.
And I got to share that joy because I'd shown them the rainbow!
Of course, it can never be captured in a photo well enough.
I think this picture was my best one, of the bow over St Mary's church.

There was a secondary bow which was harder to capture.

This final picture was one that CBC took at the other end of the High Street. He managed to get a photo without any traffic!

Sometimes you don't see the rainbow in your gloomy sky because you don't see it...until someone takes the time to show you what was behind you all along.
I hope someone points out a metaphorical rainbow out to you this week...or that you can show someone that rainbow too!

Recently

 Watching:

Gilmore Girls

I love, love, love this programme! It's so wholesome and innocent and makes me long for a simpler time and small town life!

The Partner Track

All Creatures Great and Small series 3: I love James Herriot so much and this programme is really touching!

Simon Reeves South America (BBC) : Unbelievably beautiful but also heart-rending. So much of the world is exploited by Big Business. I really have felt upset by seeing how badly some people are treated by a world that just keeps taking from their country and landscape and

Eating:

I made delicious pesto pasta with courgette, pepper, tomatoes, shallot and pak choi. Very sad that CBC was zonked out asleep and didn't eat it. He'd said he wanted to go to dinner but fell asleep and wouldn't wake up.

An excellent lentil and vegetable stew. Under the guidance of Sandra (Multicoloured Madness), I soaked my lentils first and this has really helped me to avoid the digestive difficulties I have with them often!

Delicious

Playing

Mozart Symphony 39,

Bartok Piano concerto no2.

Schubert Unfinished symphony

Ruth Gipps Horn Concerto

Listening to:

Ruth Gipps Horn concert-  This is a brilliant piece!

Mozart Flute concerto in G major -  went to watch CBC play in our local orchestra's concert- first time I've ever been in the audience!

The Lark Ascending by Vaughn-Williams- it is 150 years since he was born this month so I've been playing this to the children.

Florence Price Juba Dance- a very exciting and uplifting piece from her symphony.  She was the first African-American woman to have her music played by a major orchestra.

Discovering:

That there is a Refill eco shop that has opened in our town! They have REFILL CRISPS and Chilli rice-crackers. I went there for the first time on Saturday and bought lots of snacks!!

Also, cannot believe that my neighbours, 2 along, who I met at church, run a refill eco-business! I can now go practically next door to fill up on cleaning products and washing up liquid!

Some interesting fungi growing around a tree stump in the front of school.

Wishing:

That we had booked a holiday for half term earlier! We almost booked a holiday and then it went unavailable just as we were booking! We can never get our act together!

TARDIS Tuesday- Sarah Jane Smith- Invasion of the Bane

I thought I'd return to a previous outfit worn by Classic Who companion, Sarah Jane Smith (played by the wonderful Lis Sladen) in her New Who series, The Sarah Jane Adventures. It was in her very first episode of this popular series, that she wore the outfit.  I first wore this outfit in June 2018.

Let's take a look at it:

She wore a brown and caramel-coloured striped dress, a pink ribbed cardigan with double buttons from Karen Millen, burgundy tights, brown knee-high boots and a thick, plain, gold necklace.

This is one of my favourite cosplays!

I decided to recreate some of the images I found of it to share my outfit:
My dress was bought secondhand from eBay but is from Dorothy Perkins. As you can see, it's not a match, either my legs are longer or my dress is shorter but it was a match enough for me.
I added some burgundy leggings from Primark which I've had years but recently had their seams stitched up for me by my sister.
I added my lovely eYe Boutique brown Italian boots which I've had longer than I've had CBC in my life which I recently took to the new Shoemender in town who put in a new zip for me in one boot after I busted the old one (£19 but I love these boots and although the material at the side is wearing out, they still have lots of wear in them! Plus, support artisans)
The gorgeous cardigan is from Karen Millen. It does up with a hook and eye so you can see all the lovely shiny buttons! Mine came courtesy of eBay of course!
I noticed a detail I'd not noticed last time- the fact she is wearing a simple, chunky gold necklace so I added a chunk costume chain of my Nan's that lurks in a box but doesn't usually get won as it's not quite my style but I have never been able to part with any of her 'treasure'.

I hope your week is going well. It's the last week before the Half Term holiday and I am definitely ready for a break from school and the children and my commute. I think the lack of space is getting to everyone now.

Hope you are well.

French supermarket

Reminising about my French holiday, I remembered some photos I took in the Supermarket we visited.

Ah, it is SO lovely to see MULTIPLE varieties of fruit and vegetables available loose! In the UK, moreoften than not, in the supermarket, if you are lucky enough to find something unpacked, there is only the one option. But in this supermarket, there were multiple tomato varieties, multiple plums, multiple beans and I even spy various carrots!

All those tomatoes!
Oh to have a choice of plums and greengages!

And even French beans!

Alas, I got sucked in my the bargain section...which involved some plastic!

Oh, and if you are wondering, this is my favourite purchase ever. A 300g bag of cheesy puffs- the equivalent of Wotsits. The most enormous bag of crisps I've ever seen. Of course I bought them! And ate them all! Over about 2 weeks.

TARDIS Tuesday- Kate Stewart from the Power of the Doctor

 Hello!

Hope you are well.  Wasn't it a LOVELY weekend? Well, it was in Essex. Hope it was for you. The weather was gloriously sunny and wasn't too cold. I spent much of the weekend at home but I did go to Leigh on Sea on Saturday afternoon for lunch (at the delicious Vegan Wild Health where I had a Buddha bowl and a Beetroot juice) and bought a couple of bits at the Refill room. We also went over to my Mum's for a cup of tea and to play with her kitties. Sunday, I went to church in the morning (ah, I love going to a country church!) and then did things at home.

This weekend for TARDIS Tuesday, I thought I'd make a nod to the upcoming BBC 100 years anniversary episode of Doctor Who. This is going to be a notable reason for several reasons:

1. It is Jodie Whittaker's last adventure as the Doctor.

2. It features the first onscreen appearances of 80's classic Doctor Who companions Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) and Ace McShane (Sophie Aldred) for the first time since they appeared on the show.

3. It features a return of the Master.

4. It features Daleks AND Cybermen.

5. It features Kate Stewart, daughter of classic Who character Brigadier Alastair Lethbridge Stewart.

I saved this picture from the limited images available from the upcoming episode as I realised that this was a cosplay I could do really easily with everything I owned already. I love it when I can do a 'closet cosplay' as well as one that has been painstakingly researched!

Shall we have a look at it?

https://jemma-redgrave.net/2022/04/17/new-doctor-who-kate-stewart-promo-image/

Yes, it's not the most exciting of outfits- it is a 'work look' and a fairly Autumnal boring one at that but occasionally, I do wear things like this when I am not feeling 100% imaginative and for  lot of people, they like this kind of look for work. Perhaps, even if you think this is a boring look, you will appreciate that I managed to put together something quite similar even if it doesn't float your boat!
It features:
  • Navy blue blazer
  • Black/navy trousers
  • Purple jumper
  • Small gold circle necklace
  • UNIT round pin-badge.
  • Gun in the hand! OO-er!

Over to my version:

Let's chat where I went with this.
I started with a purple, sparkly jumper from Whistles with Merino wool. Sadly, the sparkle is not visible in this picture. I bought this jumper for my Yaz Khan cosplay which I wore for my 40th birthday cosplay party (which many of you featured in!). Whistles is a posh brand but I managed to get mine fairly cheap.
Next, I added a navy blue, soft-blazer from Urban Outfitters. This comes from my Clara cosplay for an episode called Hide. It's actually a little tight as it is an XS but is fine with a thin jumper underneath.
The ubiquitous black ASOS trousers made their 20 millionth cosplay appearance and I just threw on CBC's black school shoes as I had temporarily mislaid my own black boots and couldn't be bothered to find any others.

After this, I added a small gold circle necklace (see clearly below). I bought 2 of these from eBay for 99p each for my Into the Dalek Clara cosplay. This time I wore just one. (Oooh, just noticed you can see the sparkles a bit...)

I'm presuming Kate's pin badge is the Unit one like this one on eBay but at a distance, all I needed was a silver circular pin badge with a circle within a circle of some sort to add to my lapel rather something accurate. I selected my Tudor Rose pin badge which I bought on my UK cruise with Mum when we visited Speke Hall in Liverpool. I did the trick.
Are you wondering about my gun?  Well, the hose gun was lying on the wooden table, unattached to the hose in the garden and it has a trigger and everything so I just grabbed this for the photos! Ha!

It's a pity I haven't had my hair cut yet as this is the length I am going to go for. Ah well, there's room for improvement another time!

I could very easily wear this look for school for a day when I want to be a little smarter. I think I'll be a little too warm at the moment though for being inside at school so I might wait till it gets cooler. It was good for being outside in.

What do you think?  Will you be watching the episode when it airs on the 23rd October? I'm SO excited for Ace and Tegan! Chibnall better not kill them off though! I want to see them again!

Clematis glory

Last October, I wrote a short post about the wonderful Clematis Tangutica that we inherited when we moved to our house.

I realised that I only shared one picture last year so this year, I thought I'd give it to the glory it deserves.

Below, you can see just how much it has grown this year and how it surrounds (and clings onto) our swing seat.

It spreads quite far.

I'll show you the flowers at various stages
Here you can see the flowers as they have turned into seedheads. If you leave them, they go grey-haired and even more fluffy with distinct seeds attached. I've been cutting and saving these for my work colleague who makes beautiful dried flower arrangements.

Above, you can see the stage before, when the fluff is spiky and growing outwards.

Before this, you can see how they lose their Chinese lanterns revealing the stamens and stigma
Here it is at peak deliciousness for the myriad bees of all kinds who are flocking here in droves. It's wide open.
The stigma or stamens are bright yellow- hadn't seen that before!

Squeezing in that gap.
Here they are at the stage where the bees are itching to get inside but can't quite get in unless they squeeze in those gaps.
And here are the totally closed petals.
Can you see the tiny yellow bud?

It's such joy to see these beauties reach their Autumn Zenith. I am grateful for Mrs Baker (previous owner) and her clever planting!

Have you come across this beautiful before?

TARDIS Tuesday - Robots of Sherwood- Clara's tartan cute look

Hi,

Welcome to another TARDIS Tuesday! Today, I'm featuring an outfit worn by Clara in series 8 of Doctor Who.

I have featured this outfit twice before: in May 2019 and earlier in September 2017

It's not changed hugely but I have made a slight alteration.

https://claraoswaldcosplay.dreamconnect.de/?p=586

Sadly, we didn't get to see the outfit for very long, nor in daylight which is a shame since it is SUPER cute!

It featured a teal Oasis jumper and a Topshop purple and teal skort (that's a picture of shorts and skirt). She wears black tights and I THINK she wears her Bertie Astor wingtip heel shoes.

Related imageImage borrowed from WornonTV.net

And here's my 2022 iteration!

I started with the same Topshop skort I've worn each time (it's screen accurate). It's really short but cute.
I teamed it up with an alternative Oasis jumper which has a leather collar. This jumper originally had a floral colour and a fake shirt bottom but the wonderful Ang adapted it for me. She even managed to turn the floral collar into lining for another Clara dress so not to waste it!
Today, I decided to wear a different pair of Clara shoes- these are my Bertie heels rather than my black suedette boots I wore last time.
I can't work out where I got this leather collar from but it is not the one I usually wear.
I wore this on Sunday for an orchestra rehearsal.  The skort IS short but I do like how well this outfit goes together. The whole thing really needs an iron but that's not going to happen!

I have not worn this outfit for school for obvious reasons but I hope Clara didn't- too short!

Hope you had a good day!

Be thankful for what you have.

The sermon at church last week ended with giving thanks for what you actually have. I think noting any tiny bit of joy, be it something that made you laugh, something you ate that was tasty, something you found comfortable as well as the gratitude for all you have, own and have, is really important.  Others may think a happy life is only about having the big things and yes, gratitude for these is super important, but actively thinking of those things that helped or made your life easier in any way is a good way of helping make a time which is difficult a bit better. It might not make a huge difficult situation any easier but it still helps in its own little way. I also love recording little moments and incidents that made me happy.

1.  I joined my inlaw's 'Wordle Nerdles' whatsapp group when on holiday in France. It's fun having a little group and doing that challenge with them each day. They are really good at it. I am ok but sometimes take more guesses than them.  Today, My MiL got the word in 5, then BiL got it in 4, then SiL got it in 3.  They said I should try to get it in 2 as the last player to go.  With a very lucky 1st guess, I did INDEED get it in 2 guesses!!! This made me feel happy!

2. I had to go cover 1st flute at my local  orchestra today as my friend, who plays 1st, was ill. I was a bit grouchy about going because I had had a busy day yesterday and really wanted to be at home (particularly as I had work to do). CBC was even grouchier about going and HE is doing the concert (I am not). My old singing teacher from childhood plays 1st oboe and we were just really silly together and had a really fun time being generally naughty and chatty together (but not loud enough to disturb the rehearsal) and it was great fun!

3. Yesterday's concert with Kensington Chamber orchestra went really well in the end. The rehearsals had been a bit hardgoing (with different conductor) but the concert went really successfully and I felt really well-rehearsed on my part and felt I, and the orchestra, did a good job.

4. My MiL (CBC's Mum) came on the train from Northumberland to watch our concert. It was so lovely to have her in the audience. She's a musician so it's really nice to have her opinion on the concerts.

5. Some difficult classes were not SO difficult as they could have been on Thursday last week.

6. Year 6's were sweet in their music lesson on Friday.

7. I enjoyed having a slight lie-in yesterday morning and today.

8.  Really enjoyed rereading a good book I read in 2020!

9. Still getting ripe tomatoes from the garden

10.  Since CBC changed my Brompton's flat inner tube (and we have given her a clean), my Brompton has been really lovely to ride again.

11. Had a really lovely 1st session with my new drumming club on Monday. I remembered a game I learnt when working at the Royal Academy of music and I tried it with the kids which worked out really fun.

12.  With exception of 1 child, most of my Year 3-4 choir children tried very hard in our 2nd session on Tuesday including 2 who I thought were going to be difficult.

13. Year 5-6 choir working well so far and after a lot of prompting and messages, I've managed to get it up to 25 children. I'm using a different space this year as the upstairs corridor (where the piano is) has so much extra furniture in it to move (and we know I'm rather tired of moving things...) I really would like the piano but a keyboard will have to do.

14. I actually remembered to sort TARDIS Tuesday a bit earlier!

15. I have a work colleague who makes dried flower arrangements and I've been taking her prunings from the garden and she's really liked them!

And in addition to all those little trivial things, I am grateful for my family, food, home and that my cold is going away.

What are you grateful for?
