Style Imitating Art- Jazz Stories- 3 for the price of 1!

Evening there,

Hope you are well.

This evening, for Style Imitating Art, Daenel picked a brilliant piece of artwork, right up my street!

Inspiration piece: Jazz Stories: Mama Can Sing, Papa Can Blow #1: Somebody Stole My Broken Heart by Faith Ringgold.

Ah, isn't it brilliant! So bright and so many cool features! Plus, of course, it's all about music!!!

Here's my collage I sent to Daenel.  Yes, I went for three outfits!

I'll talk you through my sartorial choices each in turn.
Outfit no. 1 was based round this lightweight vintage blouse I picked up from Polly's Vintage at Battlesbridge antiques centre last Summer.  The pattern reminded me of the stripy edge of the inspiration piece.  Underneath, for warmth, I chose to wear a navy turtle neck (M&S) and trousers (Just Female)- the colours aren't quite on but I thought it could represent the blue suits of the men. My Clarks Originals red desert boots and bead necklace were a nod to all the red.  This is what I wore to school today. Oh, and my red and blue Swatch watch was a nod to all the colours of the piece.

Outfit no. 2 is based on the dress of the main singer.  I took one look at the picture and realised that I had a dress with a very similar sort of print...but I had put it in the charity bag! I love the dress shape but the colour and material doesn't quite work for me. I find it hard to wear in the Autumn/winter in terms of colours and layering but the material is too hot for Summer. I added a beaded necklace (from a local shop near my childhood home).  I did want to wear my red heels with it, like the singer...but of course I couldn't find them! So I donned a scruffy pair of old red spotty ballet pumps.
My third, and final, outfit, is a dress I bought from ex-blogger and penpal, Char from her insta sale last year.  Honestly, when I saw she had a brand new dress with violins on it for a mere £8, I couldn't resist it!  That is, of course, a nod to our Double bass player at the back.  I liked the smart high-necked collar which made a nod to the suits of the men.  My T bar Clarks shoes completed the outfit.

I wished I had donned one or two items of jewellery in my collection, two of which are pictured.

This Tatty Devine musical necklace would work well with the whole vibe, as would this musical brooch trio. I have a saxophone brooch which is attached to a corduroy blazer but it's hard to undo so I didn't bother and believe it or not, I have a blue drum pin badge which is almost identical to the one being played by the drummer.  However, I couldn't find it!

And that's the whole band:

What do you think?

What would you have worn? Which of my outfits do you think is your favourite.
You've got till tomorrow night to put together an outfit if you want to join in.
Flatlays of clothes are acceptable too!
Head over to Daenel on Wednesday for the round up.

Style Imitating Art outfit- Damunt de tu nomes les flors

Hello there,
I hope you are well.  I'm not 100%, after that headache on Friday, my throat started to feel incredibly sore and I felt achy and I woke up with Tonsillitis on Saturday morning. I headed off to my opera without much time to think and felt dreadful most of the day. After a broken night on Saturday night, Sunday, I had a look at my tonsils and they were covered in those horrible pustules and all red and inflamed! Lovely.  I felt pretty grim most of Sunday, lacking in energy and enthusiasm and very tired. I didn't go to work today because I still felt horrid, and whilst I'm feeling an improvement, I still feel really tired, achy and not looking forward to talking lots for my lessons tomorrow with my throat and glands as tender as they are.  Sitting quietly, not talking or having to sing, is much more conducive to recovery!  This style imitating art, which I'd thought about last week, was rather sadly, just worn to go to for an appointment with the nurse and for being at home.

The inspiration is rather beautiful. All those gorgeous colours on a background of sumptuous purple.
The tapestry “Damunt de tu només les flors” by Spanish textile artist, Carles Delclaux Is
Here's me:

I wish I had worn my purple coat with this look as it is the exact colour of the background but it was threatening rain and I didn't want to get soaked on the way home from the surgery. My Brogue boots are purple but they don't seem to come across in the photo.  I took my inspiration from the narrow strip of black with rainbow colours beginning with my gorgeous velvet embroidered trousers from Zara (bought second hand) which I TOTALLY copied from Anna at Anna's Island style as I loved them when I saw them on her a couple of years ago- pretty jogging trousers are a rare and special thing! I paired them with a black frilly turtle neck jumper that I wore because I wanted to be cosy and because I'd worn it and could get away with another wear before washing as it wasn't too smelly.

As a nod to the hearts on the dress of the lady, i wore my rainbow pencil end heart which was a gift from Lily when we met in Oxford.

What do you think? If you wanted to join in, head over to Kim at Fierce Fashion blog and send your outfits to Kim (fiercefashionblog@gmail.com) by next Tuesday, January 28th.

Outfit- We're going on a bear hunt!

I know it's not Christmas anymore, but I have ONE more outfit I didn't share!
Technically, I wore it in November though so it doesn't QUITE count as a Christmas outfit.

My orchestra puts on a concert especially aimed at children.  For the first 10 years of doing this, the wonderful Kathy Clugston from Radio 4 used to be our narrator- she's best pals with our principal Clarinet player (and she told me I was her favourite flautist!) but she moved to Belfast a couple of years ago so we had to do without her.  The main piece in the programme was Ian Stephens' We're going on a bear hunt based on Michael Rosen's story and David Benson Phillips' Playschool original version of this.  We performed it with Kathy a few years ago- there's a picture of me hugging the bear in the blog post I did.  This time, we were asked to wear All Black with sparkles. I was disappointed as this is usually my opportunity to wear my coloured posh dresses.
Still, I DID have something slightly subversive to wear.  Remember my red velvet dress I recently found in the charity shop?  Well, at the time, it was also accompanied by a Black velvet version with a white collar embroidered with snow flakes.
I decided to get away with wearing that.

To add sparkle, I wore my silver sparkly Lorelai L-Q star earrings AND to match the theme- a glittery bear brooch!

I wore this with my trusty Clarks Brogue books (this was their inaugural outing actually).

It was a fun, comfortable outfit to wear.  We went out for a meal at Nusa Dua, an Indonesian restaurant near Leicester Square after the concert so it transported well into an evening out- I hope!!

What do you think?

Guy Fawkes outfit

I feel like I've not shared many outfits on here for a while beyond TARDIS Tuesday. There has been a reason for that. 1) The back to school gloom, b) My camera has a problem where I couldn't stick the lead in and transfer photos, had to locate my card reader, c) my laptop is dead so I am having to use CBC's and so I have had limited time to blog d) I just seem to have got out the habit and not really got around to photographing my more creative outfits.
Thus, when I made a conscious decision to dress up for the 5th November (Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes night), I thought I'd actually photograph it, even though I have to have grainy indoor shots.

Ann inspired me with her recent Stairway photoshoot so I decided to take some photos on our stairwell. It's not as delicious as the one Ann modelled on but we do like our modern stairway- hey, my Dad and Stepmum even just got theirs done the same as ours!

The outfit features one of my favourite charity-shop buys.

This Emily and Fin dress features a beautiful subtle firework display print- it's so subtle that not one person at school on the day spotted what the print was and how topical I was!  I bought it from Barnardo's retail and I'd seen this very dress from Emily and Fin on www.amilliondresses.com , a blog I used to follow. Its £65 price tag put me off though, despite the fully lined, cotton, has pockets, flattering shape. I saw it on the rack in the charity shop for £9.99 or £11.99 with its £65 price tag still on! Bargain!

Today, I decided to wear it with a claret-coloured top (from Aldi a few years ago) underneath.  Accessories were found in the form of a fox brooch, a purple bead necklace (a present) and some charity-shopped tortoiseshell hoop earrings.

Finally, aside from leggings and socks, I wore my new winter boots, a pair of men's burgundy leather brogue-boots from Clarks. I only went in because CBC wanted me to look at some shoes and as usual, found nothing in the women's department and found all sorts in the men's!  This pair were ordered in by someone who then decided they didn't like them or want to buy them- so they just had the one pair in a size that fitted me!!! I'd been wistfully eyeing up a similar Women's pair by Carvela in Kurt Geiger at double the price after admiring my lovely 2nd Flautist from my orchestra's conker-brown pair for about a year!

Incidentally, today is the lovely-deceased WOMOTM (my Father-in-Law's) birthday.  He would have been 85 today and I associate his birthday with going up to Hexham for the Hexham Fireworks display.  Much missed and much loved.

A festive, smart outfit

This is a bit overdue to share but I am getting a bit swamped by my annual Book Review post so I need something easy to post.

This is what I wore for our Christmas carol services at school.  I wanted something smart but that I would feel happy walking the mile to the church and back twice (4 miles that day!)

The skirt is one I bought from TK Maxx a long time ago, probably about 5-6 years ago - it's a full circle so it flows really nicely.   It's also good to hide the scruffiness of thse boots I am wearing- the leather is falling off along the zips but they are a lovely pair of boots so I wanted to wear them and not my Dr Martens as I know they are good for walking in.  The top is a sparkly turtle neck from Primark and is nice and stretchy so good for all that exertion but has a festive edge.

To make it that bit smarter, I added this navy polka dot cropped blazer (charity shopped) and added a nice necklace which I THINK was either a gift from one of my Mum's two best friends a long time ago (Lin was it you?? Now I know you read my blog!)!  The brooch was charity shopped and a nice final sparkly edge. Oh and some sparkly snowmen earrings.

It was a good choice. I felt comfy and smart all day and it was something I felt fine about standing in front of the parents wearing for the performances- not something too quirky OR boring!

Slightly foxed

Hi there,

Certain prints are such fun to wear.

Foxes, squirrels and other Woodland friends always make the onlooker smile.

This Run & Fly dress is a favourite for its running Fox print even if the material is slightly weird and paper-bag-like!
I wore it with my new Charity-shopped Rieker shoes. I have almost the exact same ones in black (now grey with ankle straps) which have lasted for such a long time and been a stawalt. Even though they weren't perfect condition- for £3 in the charity shop, I wanted to give them a go knowing I like the other ones so much!
Foxy accessorising too- CBC said that the two types  of fox did not go with the print but I decided to hedge my bets anyway!

Photos were taken at Frazer's tearooms in Battlesbridge.   I recommend this place to eat a nice lunch/breakfast/tea! They have a beautiful large garden to eat in.

Hope you are well.

5 brooches and friends #69

Hi there!

Greetings on this hot evening.
Last night was my school concert- it was very successful despite it being an administrative nightmare setting it up and the temperatures in that hall being very extreme- but my children played really well.

Anyway, here's a fairly simple post sharing some of the brooches and necklaces I have worn recently.

Glitter bear (Topshop) and glitter heart (Hello Crumpet on Etsy) for a simple green t-shirt.  I find it really hard getting the bear to face upright!
This joke was a bit of a play on words:  His name is Tik Tok (from Sugar and Vice on Etsy) and there are lots of clocks behind him...

 Balloonicorn from Sparkle Happy mama.
TARDIS door sign necklace from Etsy.

Finally, 3 pins:  Unicorn from eBay, Jelly Bear from Sparkle Happy mama and Custard Cream from Nikki McWilliams.

Any favourites here?

5 brooches and friends #68

Hi there,
It's been one of those frantic, scrabbling catch-up weeks.  Thus, I don't seem to have the brainpower for anything too thought-provoking or long-winded so I am sharing some recently worn broochage and necklaceage!  Yes, that's a word. I like to go in for a little nomenclature occasionally!

So, onto the main event:

I wore this book-themed dress on Wednesday with this Jane Austen quote pin saying, "I declare there is no enjoyment like reading,"  This is what Miss Bingley says to Elizabeth Bennett and Darcy to be provocative in Pride and Prejudice.   Accompanied by Mr Foxton and a book dress!

For the party on Saturday, I wore this necklace from Down the Rabbit Hole on Etsy!  I do like how ridiculously long it is! Worn with ice-lolly dress.

Sunday saw me wearing another fox with a cottage dress. Lots of foxes in country gardens.

On Monday, I wore Tik Tok from the World of Oz (from Sugar and Vice Jewellery) with a simple navy top and maxi skirt.

Finally, Tuesday, I wore this Fat Kitty bomb necklace with more kitties!

Any favourites here?

Hope you are well and I will try to visit anon!

A whimsical "Not buying ANYTHING in the sales," wishlist...

Since Christmas is now over and this won't sound like a big Christmas list, I thought I'd share some really nice and cute items that I think are great and would gladly own! As we are now mortgage-payers though not yet moved (more on that soon), I won't be buying any of these, much as I would LOVE to!  Maybe you might like them too! Or at least be entertained by my novelty tat-likes!
Fox blouse from Sugarhill Boutique
Firstly, I saw this blouse on my IG friend Charrrlie a while back and I confess that I adore it!  It's now in the sale at £29 and I would dearly love to buy it- in fact it has hovered in an online basket about 6 times now but I have not made any sale purchases as finances are going to be limited for a while so I won't be getting it, but it is rather gorgeous!
Fox jumper from Sugarhill Boutique
The fox blouse has been accompanied every time by this delightful foxy jumper, £35 in the sale- I think it is really cute but I do already have a fox jumper so alas, I must resist!
Rainbow jumper from Sugarhill Boutique
This rainbow jumper is also from Sugarhill Boutique but is not in the sale! It is rather jolly! I do love me a good rainbow!
Lolly Jar
Lolly Jar from Lottie and Lu.

High up the novelty tat (but expensive!) stakes is this aaaaaaaaaaamazing sweetie jar brooch from Lottie and Lu! Oh my! What a clever idea!

Button Jar Brooch
Button jar from Lolly and Lu by Martini & Slippers
Similarly, this button jar brooch is utterly adorable and I can think of clothing this would go beautifully with!

Sausage Fox necklace from Little Moose
Continuing the foxy theme is this marvellou Sausage Fox necklace from Little Moose! It is a lovely tortoiseshell acrylic and very sweet. They also do a Weasel which I love too! It is around £27.99

'Sausage' Weasel Necklace
Sausage Weasel necklace from Little Moose.

Oh look, here is the weasel!

Cheshire Cat Necklace
Cheshire Cat necklace from Little Moose

Little Moose have had this Cheshire Cat necklace a while and it is one I always go and stare at lovingly, well, when I remember that  Little Moose exist!
Apatosaurus necklace from Little Moose
This Apatosaurus necklace is HUGE and I adore it!

Mountain Range Necklace
Mountain range necklace from Little Moose
This Mountain and Cable Car necklace is really sweet- it's another one I occasionally go and drool over...
Firework Sparkle Necklace
Firework necklace from Tatty Devine
Finally,no way could I ever afford this but I do think this Tatty Devine necklace is amazing! CBC would KILL me if I bought and/or wore this!

Any ones you like here or are they all a bit too novelty for your tastes!?

Magnapins & Brooch converters- a guide to getting more out of brooches

Hello All,

As you may know if you are a regular reader, I am rather a fan of brooches.  In my myriad 5 Brooches posts over the past few years, a few of you have confessed to liking the idea of brooches but not liking the ideas of  making holes in your clothes or finding it hard to wear them.
I agree with this problem. Some clothes, it doesn't seem to affect them, particularly if they have a wide weave, but with certain items, the holes you create as you stab a hole into the garment with a brooch pin seem huge! Also, positioning them right is also very difficult whether you put the brooch onto the garment when you are or are not wearing it.

To this end, I thought I'd share a few solutions I have discovered to this problem.

Magnapin

The first one is a magnetic brooch fastener called Magnapin.  It is made by a US company but over the last year or so, they have been imported to the UK by some online retailers.
It comes in a box and the magnet is extremely powerful. It is about the size of a British 5p piece.

It comes in two pieces- the magnet and the metal part which has a hole through which you post the long pin of your brooch.  The hole has some sort of foam inside it which ensures your brooch doesn't rattle in the hole, it is a snug fit.  You can see below, that you open your brooch back pin and insert it through the hole. You will encounter a little resistance. Push it to the middle and then make sure the flat side is facing outwards- you can then fasten your pin as usual.  Position it where you want to on your garment and then hold the magnet the other side of your garment until they 'snap' together.

For larger, heavier brooches, they suggest you use two magnapins, but I've not actually tried this at all yet though I do have two.
Where to buy:
In the UK, you can purchase Magnapins from Daisy Park - they retail at £13.95 or  from Kitty Kat Uk for £11.95. I got my two on special offer so they were cheaper. They are slightly cheaper if you purchase direct from Magnapin in the US but they didn't used to ship to the UK.

Any problems with them?
Well, occasionally, the magnet doesn't sit flat, it wants to tip and touch the brooch back that is attached to the brooch, so it sits diagonal. I think this might be because the metal of that type of brooch pin is magnetic and so the magnet is attracted to it. This is occasionally annoying but for the most part is not a problem. On this shiny material below, it slipped a little too when I knocked it around after a day.

Excuse the double chin- but you can see this is quite a substantial sized brooch and it held fairly well at my collar. This one did slip a little when knocked but otherwise, they hold really well.

Brooch Converter

Sometimes though, you just don't want a brooch- perhaps your fabric is delicate or you can't get it in the right position or the material is too patterned for you to notice the brooch.  Instead, the second solution for wearing your brooch is using a brooch converter to make it into a necklace.

You can see that they are very simply a tiny thin tube with a loop attached. You simply post your brooch pin through the thin tube the way you did with the Magnapin. There is no sponge cushioning it and making it a tight fit which I think causes the problem mentioned below.*

The two types allow for brooches that are fitted to their brooch horizontally, as pictured below, or occasional vertical ones.
Where to buy:
I purchased mine from somewhere I have avoided since I discovered they don't pay their taxes.  If I cannot get it elsewhere, I will buy something from there, otherwise, I will always try to find alternatives which is usually no problem.  Yes, I am talking Amazon- I bought the vertical brooch converter from Beadaholiques here for £2.19 and their horizontal brooch converter for £2.89 here

Any problems?
*Yes- I have found that certain brooches, particularly heavy ones, big ones where the pin is quite far away from the top edge of the brooch or ones with a long pin really tip forward or backwards and just don't sit right and I gave up on wearing them with the brooch converter. Still, one of two of them have worked quite well.
You can see the horizontal converter in use here with this heart balloon brooch. It does rock a little because the tube doesn't have sponging inside but this brooch pin isn't too large so it largely sits straight.

I've not tried the vertical one yet, but I will add to this post when I do.

What do you think?
If you are a brooch wearer- would this revolutionize your brooch-wearing? If you are not, what do you think of the ingenuity in these products?

xxx

P.S. I'll say this anyway, even though you know it. I was not given these products by any company wanting a glowing review- I just purchased them myself in order to protect my clothing and extend my brooch versatility usage.

Strawberry patience

Do you know why I love Charity shops so much!  Because you can so often get something you wanted first time round in there if you are a patient.  I posted about my Topshop coat that I found in the charity shop that sells for £90 on eBay because it is a Clara cosplay item- sometimes it is something like that but often, it's just something you really wanted!
Henry Holland dresses are one of those things that I always get excited about if I see them in a charity shop- this Strawberry flora one that I have often admired.  Patience meant I found it for £3 in the charity shop this Summer!  It is a size 12 which means it is a little baggy on the top, but my heart felt sorted that out easily!
Whilst I am TRYING not to just buy pretty things in a charity shop because I think they are pretty (because it is ok to think something is pretty and not have to own it) or indeed online (So many Lindybop dresses I have loved this Summer but not bought, even when they were in the sale with extra 25% off), if it is one of those, 'really-wanted-it-first-time-round' items, then I will make room for it.  And cheap Clara Oswald items of course!

If you're thinking you've seen my necklace in brooch form before, you would be right, but I'll tell you more about that in another post soon!

Hope you are well.

xx
