TARDIS Tuesday- Peri Brown- The Two Doctors Closet challenge

I've come to realise that the majority of my blog friends and readers are perhaps not so interested in my TARDIS Tuesday posts these days as in general, the comments are so much more plentiful on all my other posts but these! This is a little sad but since I do these for my own enjoyment, it wouldn't stop me from posting them. Sometimes, I see people on Insta complain about engagement on their cosplay posts and say perhaps they wouldn't continue them, which to me, seems a shame, if it something you really enjoy!

Today, I thought I would put together another closet cosplay outfit, e.g. one where you haven't really bought anything specifically for that cosplay but rooted around in your wardrobe to find  garments or accessories which could do a good job.  I like this, as it's a fun way to look at your wardrobe and try things together that you might not have done before.

The inspiration today is another one worn by Classic Who Companion, Peri Brown, as  portrayed by Nicola Bryant in the 80's.  It was worn in multi-doctor episode, The Two Doctors which included Colin Baker AND Patrick Troughton as well as Jamie McCrimmon.

I think they may have filmed in Spain.
What did Peri wear?

Image borrowed from:
http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/p/peri.htm

She wore a pastel multicoloured patterned lame cropped top with a matching headband worn along the forehead- very 80's!
She teamed this top with turquoisey-blue high-waisted shorts, worn with a red belt, her curious yellow and red keyring/charm and some turquoise peep-toe shoes.

Now, I confess, that I wouldn't have considered attempting to do my own version of this outfit but for this post which the actress herself posted where she shared someone from a convention who had done their own version of it. Instead of a lame blouse, they wore a rainbow checked shirt, tied up and I suddenly realised, I had something similar and thus suitable which I could use for this outfit!
And when I thought about it, I realised that I had pretty much everything else I needed for the outfit. And this would be a good summer home and gardening outfit!

And, da naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Here it is:

It was fairly easy to convert the shirt. I tucked in the collar so it was hidden and did up 2 of the buttons lower down and tied up and tucked in the rest of the shirt. I rolled up its sleeves too.

Next, I added this pair of vintage high-waisted shorts and added the tiny belt which came from a vintage dress I no longer have. I probably wouldn't wear my blouse tied up like this unless I had high-waisted shorts. I have realised that these are so much more suitable for my shape than modern low-waisted shorts which are too big for my waist if they fit my hips.
I did contemplate adding a little photo keyring I had but instead, my eyes fell upon this yellow and pink personalised 'pencil' keyring I received as a present from a child at school last year.
Ha! I thought it would be funny to recreate this photo I found on the internet of Peri expressing her heat-levels. Yet, it was like that this weekend here!

You can just about spy my turquoise pointy Croc shoes above. I didn't think I still had turquoise shoes until I went into the garage and put these on to get something. They are kept in my garage to put on when I go in there to avoid getting dirty-feet! I take these to music camp with my usually.

If you are thinking I forgot the headband, fear not! I suddenly remember this rainbow elastic-headband I bought from Claire's Accessories about 20 years ago!
It's a pity my hair isn't as short as it was but this is close enough for me.
And that's the whole outfit! I am super, super pleased with how I have managed to adapt this into something a bit more wearable than the slightly impractical lame original.
Like Peri's last outfit, 2 weeks ago, I will be wearing this one for work but again, adapted so the shirt is tucked in and the collar and buttons worn a bit more demurely.

How would you have reinterpreted the rainbow lame top if you were putting this outfit together? I'd love to know!

TARDIS Tuesday- 6th Doctor Colin Baker Summer inspiration

 Hi there,

I thought I'd try another Summer spin on one of the Doctor outfits from the Classic Who Doctors.

Today, I am looking at the Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker's outfit.  His, is the most garish and costumey of all the Doctors' outfits.

I've never done a full 'cosplay' or actual dress up of this Doctor but I used it as inspiration twice in
May 2015 and July 2015.

I thought I'd look at the chief components or features of his outfit to take to turn into an outfit using items I already had:

  • Checks in either red, yellow, blue hues
  • Question mark shirt
  • Polka Dot neck tie in either blue or red.
  • Clashing patterns
  • Green boots with orange spats (black buttons)
  • Yellow trousers

And here's what I came up with:

Let's start with the skirt. If I wanted to do a female version of the Doctor, I wanted to wear as skirt. I had 2 prime candidates:
1.  Vintage Parisian Dirndl skirt bought from Corbridge Antiques for £5.
2.  Seasalt blue checked seersucker skirt (Birthday present)

I tried both on....
The red looked good but I felt like needed more clash in there- it was too coordinated.
Then I tried the blue- but it also felt like there needed to be more red.
I needed something yellow to nod to his yellow and black striped trousers but the only thing that would work was my yellow belt from a floral dress.
At that point, I wondered if I could button both my skirts together to make the outfit a bit more clashing and chaotic.  This made the skirt double sized so I had to pin the waistband and I ended up with an extra sort of bustle....which dangled down!
Next was the Question mark shirt.  Ang was kind enough to offer to add question marks to my teenage self's white concert shirt back in 2015. I always wore it for all the concerts we had to wear Black and white for. It came from Racing Green and was always quite big for me as a teenager. It's thin so it works well as a Summer shirt.  Next, I added a vintage red polka dot scarf as a neck tie. I bought this from somewhere in Northumberland- I forget where.  As a nod to his other blue spotty neck tie, I wore my blue/floral wired headband- it didn't need to match!
In terms of footwear, I didn't want to wear my teal Dr Martens boots so instead I donned my £5 charity-shopped Italian Men's green brogues and added my orange crocheted spats which Lara at Lara's Cottage Crafts made for me.  The spats don't really work with shoes instead of boots. Perhaps orange socks with black spots might work- ha?!

This time, I didn't add a cat brooch- wasn't exactly sure where it was....and, the outfit was fussy enough as it is.

So...what do you think?

TARDIS Tuesday - Peri Brown's Swan song outfit- Mindwarp

For TARDIS Tuesday today, I thought I'd return to 80's companion, Peri Brown for her outfit worn in her swansong story- Mindwarp which was part of A Trial of a Timelord.

Let's have a look at it:

She starts with a pink v-neck, crossover top which she covers up with a pink, white and blue patterned kimono top. On her bottom half, she wears cobalt trousers whcih have a pink patterned tie top. She wears white heels, pink dangly earrings and a white bracelet.

I realised I could probably do a closet cosplay of this look with things I owened, bar the kimono top. However, it was finding a lovely light summer cover-up in the St Frances Hospice charity shop for £3.50 last Saturday, that enabled me to complete this look:
I realised that the pink top I wore for Peri's Attack of the Cybermen  look could double up for Peri's top here and my Cobalt linen trousers (TARDIS blue!???), bought in Florence, Summer 2019 would work to go with them. I used my Japanese kimono cord to wrap round my waist.

In place of Peri's white heels, I added my Aldo sandy heels.  I wore pink starry earrings in place of her pink bunch of grapes. I have purple Amethyst earrings of the same style as hers but they don't show up. My bracelet was a present from a child!

What I initially put on just for these photos ended up being an outfit I stuck with- it was really comfortable and good for the weird weather we had on Sunday! I loved my Kimono top and I love the cobination of pink and blue!
What about you?

I had a lovely day with my Mum. Went over by bike-train-bike-train-bike, visited my sister and niece first and then went to my Mum's and had Spaghetti Bolognese, went for a delightful walk, sat with a cat on my lap and then went home via car-train-bike-train-bike!

Hope you are well!

TARDIS Tuesday- Peri Brown from The Mysterious Planet- 80's suit!

Hello there mes amigos.

Hope you had a lovely weekend. I had a wonderfully unfixed one. I didn't end up covering flute for that friend (which I was quite relieved about- didn't really fancy a full on weekend since the next 2 will be also!). Friday night, we headed out for Thai. CBC had an interview to become Head of department at school which he got. Which of course meant he was knackered which meant virtually falling asleep at the table so I boxed up the remaining food (I come prepared with my own boxes), which meant, together with an extra container of rice, which the owner kindly gave us, meant dinner was sorted for Saturday night! I did various bits of cleaning, tidying etc over the weekend and paid a visit to the library to pay my usual fines (when will I learn) and return a book.  We also ended up having a late lunch out on Saturday. When I was in town to return my library books, I naturally paid a visit to the charity shop.  To my delight, they had a blazer which I have had saved in my favourites on Depop which I'd been thinking about buying, but never done. I have the matching trousers for it (Miss Selfridge sale before it closed down) and it's a linen striped summer suit. And also, the blazer was perfect for a Doctor Who cosplay! It cost me £8 which, as a donation to charity, I was happy with.

So...naturally, I decided to don it for this week's TARDIS Tuesday.

Here's the inspiration:

For a change, there are lots of good quality images of it available! It was worn by Peri Brown (played by Nicola Bryant) in the 1980's for a series arc called A trial of a Timelord.  The first story in this serial was called The Mysterious Planet.  Peri wears a rather covering outfit compared to her previous season's outfits which were usually low cut and short!

Fun fact:  My very first classic Who video and episode watched as a 16 year old, when I got back into Doctor Who was this.  My wonderful sister bought me the Trial of a Timelord (which came in a TARDIS tin!) as a Christmas present that year. Best present ever!

I've been considering this outfit for about 2 years (as mentioned re the blazer).  I had everything in my wardrobe except the stripy blazer. I knew I'd really like to get the matching blazer for my Miss Selfridge trousers but was always hoping I could find them cheaper than the £10.00 + postage on Depop.

Here's my version which I'm very pleased about since the blazer is the only thing I didn't have already.

It was fun to try and recreate some of the absurdly camp poses (which I presume were promo shots for the season).
The yellow blouse I am wearing has featured in Style Imitating Art a number of times AND was worn for a Sarah Jane Smith Who outfit about 4-7years ago. It was from a vintage shop.  I just tucked its regular collar inside to give it a neckline like Peri's.
My trousers, from Next,charity-shopped at least 9 years ago, are getting a bit tight now but are much loved.  Alas, I didn't have a navy belt (I used to!) but this stretchy black one did instead.

Grandad's straw boater made another appearance (has been worn for both Romana and Yaz cosplays) and I decided to use my 7th Doctor Question mark umbrella in place of a cane.

Finally, there's even a bit of Clara in there.I used my T-bar Clarks heels from my Mummy on the Orient express outfit but tucked in the T-bar so they were just regular ankle straps.

We have a rainbow umbrella from Flying Tiger (has featured in various outfits before including my rainbow one) so I couldn't resist including it!
And that's a wrap- Da naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
What do you reckon?  I really like the way this outfit looks and might even consider wearing this for work- with a little rearrangement of the neckline!

TARDIS Tuesday: Peri Brown in Revelation of the Daleks

I last attempted this TARDIS Tuesday outfit back in November 2017 and is an outfit worn in the 80's by Colin Baker's companion, Peri Brown (played by Nicola Bryant).  Back then, it was a closet cosplay (i.e. I rummage in the wardrobe and put together items to make an outfit without having bought anything specifically with the inspiration outfit in mind).

Today, it is a closet cosplay...well I'll go into that a bit more later...

Let's have a look:

Peri wears that colour which is the epitome of the 80's, electric blue.  She wears an oversized wool coat in that colour with big sleeves and a high neck.  On the left hand side, she wears a small silver brooch.  She wears a matching blue beret. They wear this colour because it is the colour of respect and remembrance for those who have died on the planet of Necros.

On her bottom half she wears baggy black trousers and black heeled boots.

Underneath, she seemed to wear a velvet or corduroy claret tunic with a colour which has a fitted waist.  She seems to wear some sort of red floral scarf tucked in, a gold chain and blue glass dangly earrings.

Let's have a look at my interpretation:

Firstly, I said this is a closet cosplay. It is but I had to search in 2 wardrobes, 2 suitcases, 2 drawers, 4 boxes, 9 mini drawers of earrings, a brooch box and several drawers to find the elements and even then, I could not find the correct beret! What a waste of time!

I started with 2 claret tops. Both of these are tops I have for other cosplays (Clara and Romana- both shirts charity shopped). I wore the collared shirt underneath and added the top on top. It didn't seemed to have the right waisted effect so I added a brown belt to shape it.  I tucked in a black floral silk scarf as well and added a gold necklace which my friend Lara gave me.

Next, came the rummage for suitable earrings and brooch. These ones seemed the best match but I had some alternatives to choose from. (the brooch was charity shopped and the earrings from some craft fair or other.)

The above were my options....
I chose the ones below...did I choose the best version?

Even finding the Black charity shopped ASOS trousers took ages despite the fact I had seen and put them away a week ago! The black suede M&S stretchy boots were a doddle in comparison (under the stairs shoe box)
The blue cape (rather than a blue coat) was bought as a present for me by CBC from Spitalfields market when we were first going out and I love it but not worn for ages.
The hat was the most frustrating as I cannot find that wretched blue beret I wore last time anywhere or indeed ANY of my coloured berets! No idea where that box with them has gone! Is it in the loft?!?!
Luckily, I found a blue crocheted convertible hat/snood/neckwarmer that my Mum made me and that had to do!
I honestly wish I hadn't started with this outfit as the searching for items I KNOW I have took way too long, which again, points to the 'has too many items of clothing and garments issue I was talking about with regard to my Christmas outfits post.
However, I went with it after all that searching!

What do you think?

TARDIS Tuesday - Peri Brown's 80's look from Vengeance on Varos

 Hi there,

Hope you are well!

I have had a lovely day.  For the first time in ages, I actually had a proper lie in after sleeping fairly well!  After 3 nights of camping and lying on the hard ground (my lovely camping mat had a slight leak as the seam near the self-inflation chamber was loose, I think I was due a good night's sleep!

We then had a morning of doing a few bits and then we went to pick up my niece and took her to one of our nearest beaches. Unlike last Thursday where I had the great disappointment of LOW TIDE (the sea was actually about 3/4 of a mile out. I walked across the sea bed with my friend N so I know this is true!), I had checked the tide and we arrived for High Tide.  We had a deliciously cool swim and then ate sandwiches and cake from a local bakery and then another swim.  We took K home and had a cup of tea with my brother-in-law (sister was out at work) and then headed home.  CBC made us some pasta for dinner involving homegrown runner and green beans and kale, a leek, an aubergine, passata and a bit of parmesan. I'm watching the very first series of The Great British Sewing Bee whilst I do it.

Anyway, here is the inspiration for TARDIS Tuesday this week:

Image from Entertainment Weekly but found on this Pinterest

It's Peri Brown again! 80's companion of the Sixth Doctor.  You may be thinking you've seen this fairly recently but in pink....you are right- she does indeed wear a very similar outfit in pink! I wore it a few weeks ago.

This time, she wears this outfit in weird serial, Vengeance on Varos.  When I was doing my A Level's, this was when I was getting to know Classic Who episodes.  My music A'level teacher introduced me to a previous pupil of his who was a huge Who fan (in fact, he's a TV composer- he and his dad composed the Who wants to Be a Millionaire theme tune) and my teacher used to tell me about this episode of Doctor Who that he remembered that involved a green slimy man sitting on top of a fish tank. As the internet was not such a big part of life then and didn't have so many resources, there was no way to know what episode this was and it was only after reading quite a few issues of Doctor Who Magazine, I realised it was Vengeance on Varos.

Anyway, enough digression and anecdotes, here is my take on it:

I'm wearing a vintage dance leotard (which cost me £6 including postage). My mum had this exact leotard, I'm pretty sure. A pair of F&F shorts (£4 I think?) which sadly don't quite match accompany it. Turquoise is my favourite colour!
My shoes are quite old now and I think they come from Primark.
I had a bit of a dilemma when it came to the belt (oh yes, I decided to do a couple of those side by sides. I can't tell you how many times I retook this photo with either my head facing the other way or the book the other way round- I just couldn't seem to get both facing the right way!) as my red belt is a waist belt and these shorts don't quite reach my waist- they are lower waisted so the belt didn't fit. I had two pink belts and neither of them would do up. In all the photos I took, either the belt was precariously holding in place or it popped undone, like it did above! In the one photo that I got the book AND my head the right way round, my belt was really badly hanging. Sigh!
That's Monty Don's book I'm holding, without its dust jacket, not the TARDIS manual sadly!

This outfit doesn't work quite as well as the pink version and not QUITE as thrifty (after all, the pink garments were £3 & £3.25 respectively)

CBC has suggested I cosplay the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as clearly I seem to be collecting a rainbow of this outfit. Ratbag!

Hope you are well!

TARDIS Tuesday- Peri Brown from Attack of the Cybermen

This week for TARDIS Tuesday, we have an 80's cacophony of colour to contend with from one Miss Perpigillian or Peri Brown, companion to the equally brightly dressed 6th Doctor!

Here is a collage of images of her outfit from my friend Tamsin:

Image borrowed from:
https://theultimateguidetothefashionofdoctorwho.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/peri-brown-attack-of-the-cybermen/

And here is my attempt:

Here is my version!
I must just put a disclaimer that I didn't really have a huge intention of doing this cosplay outfit UNLESS I saw the items very cheaply from a charity shop!
And so it was that, I went into my local charity shop to have a little look after posting a parcel (of cosplay clothes to my friend in Aus) and there, on the rails was both a pink top AND shorts priced £3.00 and £3.25 respectively! And for the price of a sandwich in a standard cafe plus a donation to charity, it seemed rude not to take advantage.

I already had a turquoise belt and bracelet plus pale pink shoes (all from Primark about a decade ago) and it was a simple matter to find a pair of round earrings  (you can't actually see them) and a turquoise ribbon from a present to complete the look!

I'm not used to wearing this shade of pink but I'm very pleased with how this came out. The moment I finished taking these photos, it tipped it down with rain and I had to bring various clothes horses, covered with washing, in.
Peri wore quite a few variations on this outfit so stayed tuned for something a bit similar at some point! I can foresee a few versions of something like this at some point soon!

I completed a grant application for school today as its deadline is tomorrow and I was waiting on a part of the application from someone else.  Coupled with needing to do a bit of cleaning and waking up horrendously late, I feel I've wasted this GORGEOUS DAY inside! Typical!

What do you think?

xxx
P.S. Thank you for all your kind anniversary wishes!
