Vegetable Bouquet

Who needs to buy expensive flowers and vases when you can have a perfectly lovely display from chopping off your onion or Leek flowers and display them in a glass juice bottle!

This display has been going strong for 2 weeks. It was inside but CBC decided it was a bit smelly so it became an outdoor display for his party for his colleagues.

I love the perfect pom-pom shape of these beauties! They are the same family as Allium flowers of course so you can achieve a similar effect without the smell! I like that they are multi-functional though!

Last year, I displayed bouquets of Artichoke flowers so there are lots of different vegetable beauties!

Hope you are having a lovely day!

10 years since the London Olympic Opening Ceremony!

It's 10 years today since London began hosting the Summer Olympics.  As CBC was taking part in the Opening and Closing ceremonies, I received a ticket to attend the dress rehearsal of the opening Ceremony.

I thought I'd share this post again to mark the 10 year anniversary!

Happy Days!

Olympics opening ceremony!

Here are a selection of photos from my Olympic opening ceremony dress-rehearsal.  I wont say much, let them speak for themselves!

In England's green and pleasant land.
A rural scene
Glastonbury Tor and the moshpit.
Mischevious cloud kites
The water wheel.
I love clouds!
The sheep are released
The horse performs on cue!
The geese are NOT penned in!

The cricket pitch!
Scrumpy!
Maypole
Audience participation, the seas come down!
Lovely regency ladies in empire line dresses, bonnets, spencers and parasols.
The countdown!  Numbered balloons explode around the 'M25'
Here is CBC!!!  I've used the most sophisticated computer program known to man - Paint - to create a red ring around him!

The industrial revolution.  The green pleasant land is ruined by those dark satanic mills.  The hardworking people clear the set.
 The Olympic rings are forged.
The immigrants set off from Africa for new hope.
 The rings rise.

James Bond is coming in his Helicopter!
The NHS and children from Great Ormond street hospital dance lindy-hop and bounce on beds respectively.
Voldemort rises. A reference to the many literary geniuses.
 Mary Poppins' arrive!
 Captain Hook is vaniquished!
The great storm of '89!  Above, Michael Fish says there will be a little wind!
Boehmian rhapsody and many other tributes to film and music in the UK!
Firestarter!  These flames were HOT!

Hope you enjoyed the Olympics!

TARDIS Tuesday- Summer 5th Doctor outfit

HI there!

I have enjoyed my last 2 Summer spins on the Classic Who Doctors.I hope you did too!
Today, I am considering baby-faced 5th Doctor, Peter Davison's outfit.

I last looked at this outfit as inspiration in April 2021- here I did a literal cosplay and recreation of the outfit but this time, I wanted to do a Summer spin on it. Therefore I was using it as inspiration rather than a direct recreation.  I have actually done a Summer version of this once before (back in 2015 which you can see here) and I used the same base-dress.

Let's look at the original:

And this time, I have created two versions of it with one garment difference:

Here's the first one: I started with the obvious item- my Question mark shirt (embroidered by Ang) which I wore for my 6th Doctor outfit last week. As I said last time, the shirt is lovely and lightweight. I rolled up its sleeves for a more summery look.

The next item was my vintage dress bought back in 2015 or so.  I loved this dress. It's handmade and I definitely get cricket jumper vibes from the patterning around the neck and hem. Do you agree?

I added my handmade celery brooch (made from Shrink plastic in 2015). Yes, it looks more like Chard.
I wore CBC's LilyWhite's genuine Panama hat (which I bought from Oxfam for him 7 years ago or so) and added the same red spotty scarf I wore round my neck last week for the 6th Doctor outfit.

Here's the second outfit. Spot the difference!

This time, I took away the white shirt (I could have kept it on but I think in the Summer, it would be a bit too warm with both the jacket and the shirt. Instead, I wore my Whistles blazer which I bought for £4 for my 5th Doctor cosplay. It has ties but I tied them loosely inside the blazer. Celery was repinned.

I wore my Toms Huarache shoes- couldn't wear my white brogues as they are in school (spare shoes) and didn't think that the white Converse high-tops would work so well.

I think I like this outfit better out of the two, but what about you?

Castle Lavender

I promised I would share some pictures from my visit to Castle Lavender last weekend.

It is located near the village of Eynsford which is nearish to Seven Oaks in Kent.

There are various options for visiting.

You can pay £4.50 to walk round one of the fields for 45mins. Alternatively, you can pay £12.50 to have 2 hours in the picnic field (Bring your own). There's also a tour option in another field which I think is £15 or £20 and there is also a shop selling products.

We had booked a picnic in the Ladybird field. Ladybird is the variety of lavender grown in that field. We got a good place in the open marquee which provided shade to eat your picnic in.

As we ate, our feast (beautifully prepared by my Stepmum), we were treated to the most incredible, calming aroma of Lavender. The heat of the day made it particularly pungent.

We noticed a girl posing, all dressed up with a man with a tripod. She proceeded to do the same pose for the next 2 hours. We were all a little perplexed by it. Try some different poses! See if you can spot them in the photos.

It was a lovely experience. We finished up by buying an ice-cream. I had the lavender flavour because it seemed appropriate!

Do pay a visit if you are lucky enough to be in the area during the season!

Dungarees or don't dogarees!

Hello there!
Hope all is well with you!

Thank you for your recent comments. I can't wait till the holiday when I can have a good catch up!
CBC is ok but he's still very scratched and bruised with big nasty scabs and gashes all over him- a particularly nasty one on his shoulder which has gone a bit yellowy- he's now got antibiotics.

One thing I forgot to mention the other day was I had the most lovely opportunity and message (want to document it here so I remember). on Sunday. The lovely 1st flautist from the East-London based orchestra I recently played for, asked me if I was free to come to Minehead for a week next week (expenses, accommodation, food etc) to play flute with the Minehead Festival Orchestra with rehearsals and concerts (but free time too!)  with him and another amazing flautist as the regular other player is having surgery and can't do it. I was SO amazed, honoured and touched to be asked. I knew I couldn't do it as I was going to our Music camp on the penultimate day of this week but I couldn't bear to answer no straight away as it's the only time I'll get asked. Still, I will remember the chance. If only I wasn't going to camp, then I would have been free to do it!

So, here's the dungarees I bought the other day to see what you lot think.
They are lilac and made of 55% linen and 45% viscose. Most dungarees I've ever tried made me look plump and saggy but these fitted quite well! CBC was not convinced at all (he's not seen them on me in real life, only these pics) and that made me doubt them a bit. What do you think? They are totally different from anything else I have and I really liked the ruffles but will I wear them if I am not 100% convinced they are 'me'?

How did you get on with the heat this week? I found it utterly awful as I am sure you did. It was so hard to function and sleep. I am SO grateful for my house and pity anyone in badly insulated flats etc. I feel awful for all those experiencing wild fires. If these aren't enough to convince the government to work renewables and to work on emissions etc, God help us all.

I've been collecting the shower water in the buckets in the showers- CBC has been dutifully showering with the bucket, provided I put it in there for him (he empties it himself now) for the garden.

School was dreadful in the heat but thank the Lord our local authority said that children could stay home and have an authorized absence so only 10-16 kids were in most classrooms which reduced the body heat. I took in my water spray bottle (usually for my germinating seeds) and spent a lot of the time spraying children (and teachers and parents).  They absolutely loved it!
Getting home was a little bit problematic. On the Monday, they cancelled every other train at my interchange station so I ended having to sit on the hot platform for 40minutes, having just missed one.
On the Tuesday, I arrived at the end of my first train discovering my 2nd train was cancelled and there was a 20minute wait for the next one and thought to myself, "Ah, why don't I just stay on this nice airconditioned train for a few minutes before I go to the platform. I even checked the monitor which seemed to suggest I had 10minutes grace.

Alas not.
Literally minute later, the train I was on suddenly started moving and went back towards the previous station.
"NOooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" I shrieked and started stampeding towards the front of the train (I was at the very back...the next stop entrance was at the other end). I wondered if I could get  train BACK to the terminus in time for my next train.
Alas not.
The next few trains were ALL cancelled and delayed and there wouldn't be any trains back for at least 40minutes!
I legged it as fast as I could along the platform, ran up the stairs and went to the cab office which was thankfully by the station. Perhaps I could get a taxi back in time?
Alas not.
There was a 30minute delay on taxis. Not enough drivers and many requests.
BUT, hearing my story, they took pity and realised a driver was doing a drop off near by and they could squeeze me in on the way to the next pick up.
I got in the taxi and the driver did his best to get me back to my original station.
I arrived with only 30seconds to spare but a 2minute journey into the station.
Would I make it?
God was looking out for me as the train was now 5 minutes delayed and I madeit!
£7.50 poorer, a lot sweatier and definitely more stressed!
But I made it!

Wednesday resulted in 3 nice Year 5 lessons (except for having to deal with stubborn, annoying boy.) and a lovelyYear 6 final lesson. I went out to dinner with my 2 colleagues.
Today, my final lessons were with Year 4 who did some lovely variations on Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Year 6 leavers assembly plus lots of tidying up.  After school I headed up to London for a Gamelan rehearsal. I am heading to the Indonesian Ambassador's residence on Sunday (in very posh East Finchley) to perform for the Anglo-Indonesian society picnic. That was fun. I also managed to foist a box of chocolates onto the others at my rehearsal.
Tomorrow is the last day. Time to say goodbye to my Year 6's who were so awful 4 years ago and have come a very long way. Lockdown saved us all.
Hope all is well with you.
Your opinion on the dungarees please!

TARDIS Tuesday- 6th Doctor Colin Baker Summer inspiration

 Hi there,

I thought I'd try another Summer spin on one of the Doctor outfits from the Classic Who Doctors.

Today, I am looking at the Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker's outfit.  His, is the most garish and costumey of all the Doctors' outfits.

I've never done a full 'cosplay' or actual dress up of this Doctor but I used it as inspiration twice in
May 2015 and July 2015.

I thought I'd look at the chief components or features of his outfit to take to turn into an outfit using items I already had:

  • Checks in either red, yellow, blue hues
  • Question mark shirt
  • Polka Dot neck tie in either blue or red.
  • Clashing patterns
  • Green boots with orange spats (black buttons)
  • Yellow trousers

And here's what I came up with:

Let's start with the skirt. If I wanted to do a female version of the Doctor, I wanted to wear as skirt. I had 2 prime candidates:
1.  Vintage Parisian Dirndl skirt bought from Corbridge Antiques for £5.
2.  Seasalt blue checked seersucker skirt (Birthday present)

I tried both on....
The red looked good but I felt like needed more clash in there- it was too coordinated.
Then I tried the blue- but it also felt like there needed to be more red.
I needed something yellow to nod to his yellow and black striped trousers but the only thing that would work was my yellow belt from a floral dress.
At that point, I wondered if I could button both my skirts together to make the outfit a bit more clashing and chaotic.  This made the skirt double sized so I had to pin the waistband and I ended up with an extra sort of bustle....which dangled down!
Next was the Question mark shirt.  Ang was kind enough to offer to add question marks to my teenage self's white concert shirt back in 2015. I always wore it for all the concerts we had to wear Black and white for. It came from Racing Green and was always quite big for me as a teenager. It's thin so it works well as a Summer shirt.  Next, I added a vintage red polka dot scarf as a neck tie. I bought this from somewhere in Northumberland- I forget where.  As a nod to his other blue spotty neck tie, I wore my blue/floral wired headband- it didn't need to match!
In terms of footwear, I didn't want to wear my teal Dr Martens boots so instead I donned my £5 charity-shopped Italian Men's green brogues and added my orange crocheted spats which Lara at Lara's Cottage Crafts made for me.  The spats don't really work with shoes instead of boots. Perhaps orange socks with black spots might work- ha?!

This time, I didn't add a cat brooch- wasn't exactly sure where it was....and, the outfit was fussy enough as it is.

So...what do you think?
